Will taking Wellbutrin XL help with my OCD?
Hi, I have OCD along with a bunch of other crap, but I have taken Wellbutrin XR. As you may know, medications work differently for others. For me, it didn't work at all. Here's a list of meds that I take everyday.... Lithium, for mood stabilization Effexor XR, for OCD, Bipolar, BPD Doxipen, for sleep disorder Restoril, for sleep disorder Klonopin, for anxiety Seroquel, for sleep disorder and racing thoughts Campral, for alcohol urges All of these are essentially a form of antidepressant, just a little extra added for other stuff. Having OCD sucks, I know. But it sounds like you are on the right track as far as meds go. You have to remember though, it may work great, or you may have to to find the right one. It could take time. Just hang in there, and try to challenge yourself everyday with the illness. You know, do something you normally wouldn't do. A big part of living with these illnesses has a lot to do with what we are ready to do to help make it better. Meds just "cushion" the process. Hope this helps, and remember that you CAN do it!
How 'well' does Wellbutrin work for you?
I started a prescription for Wellbutrin (generic name: bupropion) today. I have ADHD, but my psychiatrist feels there's a good chance I have an underlying disorder along with it, which might explain why my ADHD has been getting slightly worse the past few years, not better. My psych suspects a mild anxiety disorder, mild depression, or maybe both. I think I can see where he's coming from, but I'm not sure. Anyway, as some of you know, Wellbutrin/bupropion is one of the few drugs that's indicated for all THREE of these disorders! :) Not that it helps everyone, and it doesn't always help ADHD as much as it helps anxiety/depression. But it sure sounds promising to me, and I also like that it has significantly LESS likelihood of bad side effects, compared to anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drugs in other families, like the SSRI family. If you're taking or have taken this, please share your experiences. Hopefully there will be more "success stories" than "horror stories"!!
Wellbutrin, Lamictal and Sex Drive?
Hello, really hoping someone can tell me some good news! I've been diagnosed with depression, OCD, anxiety/panic disorder and bipolar II. I'm 23 years old and have NO sex drive. I've been with my boyfriend for over 3 years now, and the first year was great (no libido problems). But I guess around the 1 year mark was when I first starting seeing symptoms of my mental illnesses, and my sex drive completely vanished. Needless to say, it's taking a toll on my relationship. I tried to just suck it up and have sex with my boyfriend to keep him satisfied, but it got to the point where it starting hurting and the thought of having sex made me want to run out the door. About a year ago, I started taking Prozac and Klonopin. I was on 80mg/day of Prozac until about 1.5 weeks ago. I have gotten down to 0.5mg of Klonopin before bed, from 2.0mg. I told my doctor about the low sex drive, and he switched me to Wellbutrin XR and Lamictal. I've been on this now for 8 days. I'm taking 300mg of Wellbutrin XL, and 50mg of Lamictal. I'm not expecting my sex drive to come back immediately. My doctor said that Prozac can take 4-6 weeks to completely get out of your system. But I've read reviews about Wellbutrin and people are raving about their increase in libido. Does anyone know how common this is? I am desperate to get my sex drive to what it was 2 years ago. I've also read that Lamictal can decrease sex drive... I hope they don't cancel each other out?! I'm still taking the 0.5mg of Klonopin at night, as well as birth control pills (Apri) in the morning. After reading all of this info, can anyone help me out with any related experiences?! I'm really starting to lose hope :( I've even started to look into ExtenZe for women, which I highly doubt works because nothing has been FDA approved to increase a woman's libido. Please help! Thank you :)
How did Wellbutrin help my OCD? Why did my obsessive thoughts come back when I abruptly stopped taking it? Is there probably another reason why they came back?
There are a couple possible explanations for this. The first is it helped you for the same reason Yohimbine helped my OCD; stimulants “wake” your Brain up - forcing you to focus on your environment instead of your mental chatter/Intrusive Thoughts. The second possibility, is that Wellbutrin inhibits Nitric Oxide Synthase in the Brain, which may by secondary effect, enhance NMDA-glutamate action; which may dull OCD-compulsions.The reason, would depend on whether Wellbutrin helped your Obsessions (first reason), or your Compulsions (second-reason).~Dan Gregory of Area-1255: The #1 Underground Psychiatry & NeuroScience Blog: www.area1255.blogspot.com
Is Wellbutrin better than lexapro for anxiety?
Would you believe I take both? I take Wellbutrin as a kind of motivator. I really think it's the med that makes me happy and able to deal with stress like a fully-functioning adult. I take citalopram (which is as close as you'll get to the generic form of Lexapro) for my OCD and anxiety. Wellbutrin is an anti-depressant that resides in its own special category. While Lexapro is an SSRI (it relieves depression linked with anxiety) doctors will prescribe Wellbutrin if an SSRI doesn't seem to be helping with the depression side of it all. Don't be afraid to try what's right for you. Trust me, it's worth the effort. It took me 4 tries but I'm finally on the perfect plan.
What's your experience with bupropion /Wellbutrin XL?
I just started bupropion which I suppose is the same thing as Wellbutrin. Its the 150mg once a day. I'm 16 and this is the first time I am using a depression drug. My mom uses the same one at the same dosage as I do. I really hope (being a 158 lb. girl) that I lose weight. The sex drive could be annoying for me since I'm in high school without a boyfriend. Well, At least it's summer, right? haha Anyway... I heard about the seizure risk, but it is only a .1-.6% risk at the highest dosage. Also, this drug commonly causes dizziness and restlessness, which usually goes away in a week or two. It curves your appetite, too. This means that you might be losing weight because you have a decrease in appetite. What I want to know is what other people's experiences with this anti-depressant has been. Did you experience any of these side effects, good or bad? I especially want teenage input and feedback from people who have taken it for any length of time. If you have discussed it with your doctor before though you aren't using it, what did they tell you? Please help:)
I just started taking 10mg of Wellbutrin but am concerned about its side effects.?
SIDE EFFECTS: The most commonly noted side effects associated with bupropion are agitation, dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, constipation, and tremor. In some people, the agitation or insomnia is most marked shortly after starting therapy. Some patients may experience weight loss. Uncommonly, patients may experience manic episodes or hallucinations. Four of every 1000 persons who receive bupropion in doses less than 450 mg/day experience seizures. When doses exceed 450 mg/day, the risk increases ten-fold. Other risk factors for seizures include past injury to the head and medications which can lower the threshold for seizures. (See drug interactions.) "If antidepressants are discontinued abruptly, symptoms may occur such as dizziness, headache, nausea, changes in mood, or changes in the sense of smell, taste, etc. (Such symptoms even may occur when even a few doses of antidepressant are missed.) Therefore, it is recommended that the dose of antidepressant be reduced gradually when therapy is discontinued." It has been suggested that bupropion and SSRIs may cause depression to worsen and even lead to suicide in a small number of patients. These potential side effects are difficult to evaluate in depressed patients because depression can progress with or without treatment, and suicide is itself a consequence of depression. Moreover, the evidence supporting these potential side effects is weak. Therefore, no conclusions can yet be drawn about the relationship between bupropion and SSRIs and worsening depression and suicide. Until better information is available, patients receiving bupropion or SSRIs should be monitored for worsening depression and suicidal tendencies.
Is Wellbutrin the best there is to treat depression with minimal side-effects?
This one is easy. No.I have a lot of patients with side effects on Wellbutrin. Some tolerate the side effects and continue to take it with good results while others just could not tolerate and have to get off of it.In general, yes, Wellbutrin is very unlikely to cause sexual side effects or weight gain compared to other antidepressants such as Paxil. However some patients find Wellbutrin to be too activating, meaning that Wellbutrin gives them a burst of energy but that energy is unsettling. That raw energy can be expressed as “Doc I just feel too anxious on Wellbutrin” or “I just feel more irritated and angrier in general. I don’t know why!” Some might experience tremors on Wellbutrin (vast majority of them don’t have tremors anymore after Wellbutrin is discontinued; these tremors are not permanent). On the other hand, some patients find the boost in energy secondary to taking Wellbutrin to be relatively smooth and give them the ability to get out of bed, pushing them out of a deep depression.Everyone is different!
