Japanese Customs At The Airport

Can I bring vitamins into Japan via the airport going through customs?

Up to a two-months’ supply of allowable over-the-counter medication and up to a four-months’ supply of allowable vitamins can be brought into Japan duty-free.

Do you think Japan's airport security is too strict?

I wouldn’t say that it is “lax”, as has been suggested in another answer, but I have personally found it to be far more efficient (for domestic flights, you only need to show up 20 minutes or so before your flight) and less invasive than in other countries. For domestic flights, there is no need to remove your shoes, and you can even take drinks through security checks, so long as they are in PET bottles. (You place your bottle on a machine, which scans it for dangerous liquids.) The scanner is a walk-through one, even for international flights, so there is no need to assume humiliating positions that make you feel like some sort of criminal.Last year, I was asked to open my bag at Haneda airport where I was boarding a flight to Hachijojima. The white-gloved security officer politely said “We believe that you may have a lighter in your bag. Does that ring a bell?” I’d completely forgotten about the lighter I’d put in the same bag as a backup for lighting incense when I went to visit my ancestors’ graves the previous week! I searched my bag myself, produced the lighter and apologized, and was told “Sorry, we’ll have to confiscate this; would you mind putting it in this bin?”In contrast, when I forgot about the bottle of water in my bag when I was boarding a domestic flight in the US three years ago, the TSA officer (wearing blue latex, not white cotton on his hands) riffled through my bag thoroughly, then swabbed it throughout, before telling me that this was due to the bottle of water I’d left in my bag and confiscating it. Not a very pleasant experience.Still, this was better than my experience in China, where I was given a very thorough pat-down, and the female officer manning the x-ray machine not only opened up my pouch of travel-sized cosmetics, but actually unscrewed some of the bottles to sniff their contents!

How do Japanese customs differ from Egyptian customs?

Assuming that you mean customs in the sense of border regulations dealing with import and export, for individuals:Egypt Customs, Currency & Airport Tax regulations detailsProcedures of Passenger ClearanceJapan Customs, Currency & Airport Tax regulations summaryFor import / export regulations on a commercial basis, you should start by Googling, and probably consult counsel. If you are speaking about customs in the sense of social norms and mores, there can be no short answer. Egypt is an Islamic country with a very long and complex history, and to understand it requires a grounding in Islamic custom and also in customs particular to Egypt. Japan’s culture is even more complex, particularly for Westerners. Your best starting source would be Google. Good travel books, like those from Lonely Planet, might be another starting point.

Will this be allowed through customs at a Japanese Airport?

I am going to Japan on study abroad for 1 year and I want to bring enough of this off the shelf acne medication for the entire time. But it has Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide in it and when I googled it just to make sure I could take them I discovered that these two ingredients are either limited or illegal in Japan! Is that true? Have you brought acne wash into japan before without any problems?

If they are illegal, can I somehow get them past customs? I know it sounds shady, but if I put them in another bottle would the customs officers be able to tell? It's an off the shelf medication for goodness sake!

Bringing Meds & Vitamins into Japanese Customs?

Hi, I will be relocating to Japan for work at the end of the month. I am planning to bring a supply of medicine and vitamins with me, so I can avoid translation issues at the pharmacy and also the unneccasry expense.

I am concerened about Japanese airport customs; I don't want them thinking I'm trying to resell or do something illegally.

Basically I'll be bringing a few bottles of Centrum multivitamins, Vitamin B-12 and Melatonin (for sleep).

As for meds, I want to bring a few packs each of Azithromycin, Cipro and Metronidazole. I wont have any doctor scripts.

Does anyone know the official limit of bringing meds or vitamins into Japan, and are any of the above illegal? And/or does anyone have any firsthand experience about Japanese customs and what I should be prepared for?

Do they really check for porn on your computer at customs in Japan?

Customs officials have a broad range of enforcement. If you are one of the unlucky few to have your items searched then it's up in the air. Most times people are waved through especially if the dog doesn't bark.

Also you have not only Japan Customs but US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also has a broad range of search and seizure. For example a US Customs search if your laptop is password protected you MUST comply and enter your password. Remember, the 4th Amendment does not apply at Border searches.

That's when you are coming back to America or entering the United States, and US Customs inspectors don't mess around, if you get selected for secondary screening in the USA, they check every thing from digital photos on your camera, video tape, every inch of your luggage and your computer. I ONCE (thankfully) had the unfortunate event of being selected for secondary screening when re-entering the US. US Customs are checking for child pornography, and even though you might have legit adult materials, not sure how comfortable you might be when Customs starts playing and reviewing that material when going through your items.

Any case back to Japanese laws.
Now, if you want to "go by the book" and know what the law says.

The following articles are prohibited by law:
Importing pornography is prohibited by law.
-------------------
I always take this approach, even though you probably won't get caught, you are still technically in violation of the law if you did get caught, so why chance it even if the chance is remote.
Burn your stuff to DVD or copy it to an external HD and recover it when you return.

That is the law, and yes it might sound silly to some especially since Japan has a large A/V market. But from what I gather:
1. The law protects the Japanese adult entertainment market
2. pornography is censored in Japan based on Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan. Foreign (eg American pornography is not censored).
-------------------
Like I said, even though the possibility of being checked is very remote (on the Japan side, Entering the USA, Customs Officials (from my experience) are much much stricter and stringent),

I always go back to this:
In Japan, rules are rules and the law is the law, and everyone is expected, and required to, follow the law.

Can I bring candy from japan through USA customs?

♡YES, you can.
I ALWAYS do and I declare it.
They occasionally/randomly send me through customs to take a look, but I have never had any of it taken away and I bring LOTS of candy. They did question me about the Mannen Life jellies although they let them pass.
http://www.mannanlife.co.jp/
The last time I went through they did take my 'instant' curry, curry rue and cup noodle away though. I always declare everything just to be safe.
You shouldn't have a problem.
Just be aware of what you must declare and the amounts you can carry and you'll be fine.
Good luck and I hope this helps!♡

Can I take eCigarette juice through customs in Japan?

I've brought in as many as five 30ml bottles of liquid containing nicotine and never had a problem (had them in my carry-on luggage). Several friends have had the same experience. My understanding is it is legal for personal import, so you should not have any problem with 2 bottles. That said, I've never had the bottles investigated, so I cannot say with 100% certainty that you won't ever run into an overzealous customs agent, but in general I think you'll be fine.

Can a fake designer bag pass through airport security in Tokyo without causing any fuss? I will be using it as a personal bag.

It is important to understand that when you are in a foreign country, you should to follow their laws or make an attempt to, even if you are only passing through. If you suspect you may be doing something wrong that you could be punished for, then it’s not a good idea to try to sneak it past customs. If you are caught with counterfeit goods in Japan, the punishments are stringent. While you explain to customs why you have the bag(s), you may be held without legal counsel for up to 27 days. You will have the right to a translator if they are available, but how will you ask for one if the person questioning you doesn’t speak English so well? Your embassy may not be contacted until customs decide it’s prudent. Japanese officials work under assumption of guilt, like in the British system, and forced confessions are common. In this case, your bag really is counterfeit, so likely they would obtain your confession. After that, you may be fined or jailed according to Japanese law, as befits the situation. If you’re just a tourist, I’d guess that they would fine you, confiscate your bag, and then flag your passport so you can’t enter Japan again for a certain number of years thereafter. That’s not exactly what I would like to be doing on my vacation if I were you. I’d take a different carry-on bag.Just to note, some other no-nos for Japanese customs that people don’t always take seriously:-NEVER ever ever ever ever bring illegal drugs into Japan. The punishments for this are so severe it’s not worth bringing a single joint. Check the customs website before bringing any and all prescription medication over. Don’t bring heavy duty prescription pain medication, or over-the-counter medication that could raise a red flag. I have friends who were strip-searched for having over-the-counter cold medicine from the U.S. because of the ingredients. And a few years ago an executive at Toyota was arrested at the border for prescription meds from the U.S. It’s not a joke.-Do not bring meat or dairy products into the country, including foreign cheeses. All animal products raw or cooked are confiscated and sometimes quarantined at the border. That sausage you wanted to bring from Vienna? Or that brie from Paris? Don’t even think about it.

My shipment from Japan got stuck at the customs with the tracking number EG644153752JP. How can I get my parcel? Shouold I go to the Mumbai airport customs to get my parcel?

I just checked the status of your shipment with the tracking number you have listed. It has arrived in the Mumbai Customs office on the 29/Dec which was a Saturday & then the weekend came in. I normally allow 5–7 working days for a package to be cleared by the postal customs only leaving aside the transit days from origin to destination. So give it a few more days & keep tracking it on the website Government of India, Department of Post. This is also the holiday season & their office must be swamped with Christmas gifts which all need to be examined & cleared so some extra delay can be expected. If it is delayed beyond next week then there may be a problem & you will be informed what it is. (Either a prohibited item you have imported or something of high value which cannot be imported by the postal system).FYI this customs examination does not take place at the airport but at the Mumbai Foreign Post office which is at Ballard Pier, Mumbai. If it is delayed without further reason, you could go there & inquire about its status. Its time consuming & bureaucratic but I have done it successfully so its no big deal.
