Jaw Clenching How To Stop

How do I stop my jaw from clenching?

I recommend seeing a physical therapist who is experienced in TMJ. Avoid getting a night guard fitted until after you have worked with a PT and have learned to properly align your jaw and learn how to exercise those muscles properly. You will have to learn how to reduce your tension as recommended in other posts. Caffeine reduction is a must. There are phone apps that walk you through a routine. 10 minutes twice a day can make a real difference in feeling calmer. I use an Emwave to help me with relaxation. How can I stop clenching my jaw at night?

I'm 15 years old and I've been going through tons of stress over the past year or so. I noticed that my teeth and jaw have been sore and I've been having headaches all the time and I had no idea what it was. Then a few weeks ago, I woke up in the morning and realized that I was actually clenching my jaw..
I talked to my mum and she said that I might have to start wearing a mouth guard, but I don't really want to. Are there any other ways I can make it go away? Thanks :)

You may have TMJ. Go to the dentist. He'll provide you with an appliance that you put in your mouth when you go to bed. It's not cheap, though. Costs about $550.

Jaw Clenching and Anxiety?

it is a reaction to the anxiety, when you get the anxiety your body can tremble, it almost feels the same is being really cold, the body seems to react similarly to if you were standing outside naked in the snow, you clench your jaw to stop it from shaking... it's kind of like tensing your muscles to endure the cold, you are fighting it.

this may be a little out there, but coming from someone that understands, if you let loose a little, stop fighting it, step outside of the clenched up comfort zone, your body will warm up. you can un-tense your jaw when you stop fighting your bodies re-action to the anxiety and fear, and the only way to do that is to stop feeling anxious, i don't want to project myself on to you, but an example in my life is opening up to people, i am anxious around people i get the same feeling, i let the anxiety overwhelm me sometimes, but when i stop fighting it, open up to people, face that fear, say something, i don't feel it anymore and it becomes nothing,

that's the concept anyway, as far as i understand it. it's a little abstract ,sure. but it's worth thinking about.

What can I do to stop clenching my teeth/jaws!!!!?

I have the same problem but tend to clench/grind in my sleep.

TM joint troubles are tough. (Temporomandibular joint - where your lower jaw connects with your head by your ear).

If you're not getting exercise, start. Alot of pent up stress/tension rears it's ugly head in the weirdest of ways and stress could be contributing to this.

Also consider talking to your dentist or an orthodontist about having a hard acrylic splint called a nightguard or bruxism splint made (bruxism is the $50 word for grinding teeth). These prevent you from getting your teeth together to lock in and clench, but also the thickness of it separates the upper and lowers jaws and actually puts your tm joint in a more comfortable position.

These splints aren't the cheapest thing, but if you have dental insurance you may be able to get a break and they're worth every penny, even if you have to foot the entire bill yourself.

Otherwise some self care tips:

Don't open your mouth really wide - stifle yawns & avoid big sandwiches/burgers.

Stop chewing gum or eating sticky/chewy foods that cause that repetitive chewing.

Avoid caffeine.

Exercise.

Consider taking an anti-inflammatory like advil regularly (if you're a minor please make sure it's OK with your folks).

Alternate moist heat & cold packs on the tm joint.

I hope this will help you out. Talk with your Dr. (DDS) he/she should have more insight for you.

Good luck

How can I stop the habit of clenching my teeth.?

Hi I have recently this past year relized that I clench my teeth and since then it has become a severe problem my fillings are wore down my jaw is constantly tired and I think I may be beginning to have TMJ problems. I would also like to know if the extremly painful sharp shooting pains I have been having in the side of head might be caused by this. I am at wits end with this and I have to stop but everytime I tell myself motto do it I catch myself doing it again but not before my jaw starts hurting. It has become such a bad habit I never relize when I am doing at it is very uncomfortable painful and just plain frustrating. I have heard about the new mouth guard for sleeping but I can't go around with a mouthguard in my mouth 24/7. Please help. Thank you very much. :)

How do you deal with jaw pain from clenching at night?

Make an appointment with an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (we specialize in diagnosis & treatment of TMJ problems), or a general dentist that specializes in TMD (temporomandibular diaorders). You might benefit from a bite guard appliance (hard acrylic) that has a flat surface. These kind of splints prevent you from locking your teeth together and grinding heavily while you sleep, which causes your jaw muscles to go into spasm which is probably causing your headaches.Do *not* buy one of the over the soft over the counter night guards that you heat up in water and bite into. These merely serve to stimulate your jaws to clench more do to the softness which exacerbates the problem
