Just Starting To Watch College Football

I want to start watching college football~help?

The schedules are fairly similar. Usually college football starts within a few weeks of the NFL games. College Football ends around when the NFL playoffs start.

They both have fairly similar rules but in college you only need one foot down in bounds to complete a catch on the sidelines or endzone where as the NFL you need two feet down.

Overtime is also different. In college both teams get the opportunity to play on offense. The winner of the coin toss can choose to play offense or defense first and then the ball is placed at the 35 yard line near the endzone. The other team also gets the same opportunity. Whoever has the highest score after each team gets the ball determines who wins. If it's still tied then they continue with another round until there's a winner..

Usually people are fans of the team they closest live too. But your favorite team will be up to you. You don't need a good reason to like a certain team.

Where can I watch college football in Sao Paulo, Brasil?

I know that I will get a few games on ESPN, but there won't be that many. ESPN Gameplan, where I can watch games online will also help, but the quality will probably be pretty low. Will Sky have games available on some of its many pay-per-view channels? Is there another satellite TV company in Brasil that offers more US channels? Is there a bar that caters to ex-pats that has one of those big satellite dishes that gets tons of channels? As the season approaches I'm starting to get desperate.

How should one start watching football if he/she is a newb to the sport and doesn't know much about the popularity of teams and players?

Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t need to necessarily have a favourite club to be eligible to watch football. Many people love to watch good football and don’t care about loyalties, which is perfectly normal. Don’t listen to anyone who insists otherwise.Start by watching the hyped-up matches which keep coming (Barcelona vs Real Madrid, Bayern Munich vs Dortmund, Chelsea vs Arsenal, Man United vs Liverpool to name a few). These are the matches which you will find have been given extensive build up in media. You can also watch highlights of old matches of these teams online. Less than the star players, keep your focus on the method of moving the ball around by the teams, how quickly or gradually a team aims to start an attack, how some players can make intelligent runs in between the opposing teams defenders, while others can pick out a perfect pass to find that particular player and leave the opposition dumbfounded. If you can, try playing a game of FIFA/PES occasionally. Many people learn to appreciate the importance of player runs, good passes and shooting towards the goal during certain scenarios better while playing a game. It is also useful in understanding the offside rule(no attacker can be beyond the last defender of the opposing team before receiving a pass) and tactics like counter attacking and possession football.Try watching matches from 2–3 different leagues to witness different types of footballing ideologies. The Premier League is widely regarded as a more physical and intense league, and also provides for great entertainment due to it’s highly competitive nature, where big teams are shocked on a weekly basis. On the other hand, the Spanish League and the German Bundesliga are renowned for more technical football. Do watch UEFA Champions League matches as clashes between teams of these different leagues make for fascinating encounters. In all of this, if you do like a club due to one or more of its players, the manager, the fans, the way they play football; or simply choose a club at random, stick with that club. Take joy in the club’s highs, and face the sorrow during its lows, because that what makes watching club football even more worthwhile as a supporter. Or you could just remain a neutral which is perfectly fine.

Is junior year too late to start football?

I've been in love with the sport of football (American) but all I've done was watch it. I'm about 5'6 145lbs and my friend said I should be a wide receiver (which coincidentally I wanted to be). And I have played soccer (no I will not be a punter or placekicker). But my question to you is am I too late to start? What's your advice and what can I expect? I'm trying for jv not var and I'm talking to the coach soon. Thanks

Just out of curiosity, do college football players get free tickets for family or friends?

Yes. They are alloted a certain number of tickets for home games for friends and family.

How do I start following american football?

the superbowl is going to be the two teams that have won there way to the championship through the playoff system, you have 32 teams two sides to the NFL the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (American Football Conference) 16 on each side. You can view what teams are where in from this website http://www.nfl.com/teams it will break down which team is in which division. Now its going to be difficult on which team you want to root for just now since you havent watched much. You could either just pick a team at random or watch some games and see what team youd like best. The teams that you could root for now just starting out i would suggest: Greebay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, San Fransisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Philidelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions. These teams are currently winning teams and are very exciting to watch, and it will make sure you do not lose interest in the NFL. you dont want to start out on a bad team, not that i want you to be a band wagon fan but being a new fan going to root for a bad team can cause discouragement. after that though you shoud stick with one team and root for them through thick and thin as to be a great fan, hope you enjoy it, the NFL is a great experience to watch and hopefully one day youll see it in person

Where/how do I learn to watch football analytically?

heres a start... dont watch espn. its ok to watch nfl primetime and nfl live, but thats about it. but thats a little more advanced than the average fan would understand though. you arent a phony though. if you want to learn the game, you just have to watch it. you get the nuances of the game, which is the important part really:

1- you start to pick up positions, downs and runs vs plays. you dont necessarily need to know all the positions, but mainly the skilled positions (people who touch the ball or defending them), what types of running plays there are (misdirection and outside runs) and what types of routes there are (post, go, comeback, corner, etc) and downs (1-4 and short-long)

2- then, you start to pick up on the types of nuances of the types of plays on offense (easier to understand). you look at the different types of plays (pass, run, play action, draw) and learn the different receiver combinations as well (how its set up, not what theyre gonna run necessarily).

3- after, you start to look at how the skilled positions (linebackers, safeties, corners) are playing the receivers and the running backs and tight ends.

4- after, you start to learn the different play types on offense (power i, iso, jumbo) and route combos (trips, stacks) and how defense formations work (man, zone, cover 1, 2, nickle, etc)

5- afterwards, learning about line play is important, but not entirely. i mean you can learn the different blitzes and why they blitz, etc

6- then you learn about why they work and why teams run or pass, blitz or play coverage and why they do the different coverages they do.

then theres some things im probably missing, but youll pick up on whatever i missed when youre learning. overall, itll take about 1-3 to learn. thats about average. if youre really bright, you can learn all this stuff within 12 months. if you can watch john madden clips on youtube, thatll probably help a lot also. trust me, ive played and learned a lot of sports and its the hardest ive learned. i doubt many people know how to play it or get the nuances of the game. even on here. the way i learned was through just watching it, listening to what some of the broadcasters said. i grew up with it though so its pretty much 2nd nature to me.

How do I start playing American Football in High School?

First thing to do is learn and understand the game.  You can do this by watching more football and even gaming on Madden is helpful.  Sign up for a football camp this summer and reference youtube videos to work on fundamentals.  Get in shape and give it a shot next year.  Play flag football if you can or join a 7 on 7 league in your area this summer.  If your school has a summer conditioning or off season program join immediately to show you are serious about being on the team.
