Keeping Spinach How Should It Be Done

How can you tell when spinach has gone bad?

How can you tell when spinach has gone bad? Before picking, the leaves may show obvious signs of damage or discoloration.Fresh, uncooked leaves, washed and packaged for refrigerated storage, ready to cook, may begin to turn black at the edges or along fold lines.  Tear off the blackened part and use the remaining leaf. After cooking, spinach leaves are subject to the normal processes of spoilage.  Dispose of spinach that shows visible mold, or that has an unusual odor, that shows excessive liquid or has turned to mush, or that has simply been too long in your refrigerator.

Is it safe to heat up spinach once you cook it?

The answer is: yes, it is safe. Just like it is with mushrooms.Still, there is some truth to what "some people say": spinach, both raw and cooked, does contain nitrates. If you keep it warm for a long time or reheat it again and again, nitrate will turn into nitrite ...… and then into nitrosamines, which are certainly not good for children. But all that goes back to the pre-refrigerator-invention-era. Since we have the option to keep food cool, this problem has vanished.Meaning: if you put your spinach into the fridge after cooking and before reheating it, you are safe.if you leave it in a pot on the central heating or your stove for days, you are not.

How do I keep spinach fresh without a refrigerator?

If the stalks are small you may pack them in a plastic container ( without any adhering water droplets). If the stalks are long you may keep the stalks immersed in a glass containing water. Wrapping in wet muslin extends the shelf life but not beyond a day.Another way is to place in a small mud pot which is kept in a bigger mud pot containing water. This type of “refrigerator” helps in keeping fruits and vegetables fresh for extended periods.

What can i feed my tadpoles + hints about keeping tadpoles?

If you can find a clean creek, you can collect some leaves from the bottom which have algae growing on them and throw them in the tadpole tanks (not too many!). These leaves will settle to the bottom and the tadpoles can hide in them as well. You can also use paw paw (papaya) leaves which have been frozen first. If you are going to purchase food, any green variety of lettuce (not iceberg or Cos sorry but they should be fine if you didn't feed them much) or baby spinach will be suitable. Rinse well first and then freeze. Organically grown is better so you can be sure it hasn't been sprayed with harmful chemicals before you buy it. Do not use celery leaves or silverbeet (adult spinach)!
There's a saying: "if in doubt, leave it out". If you are not sure if something could be toxic (say a plant in your yard), don't risk it on the tadpoles. You can use other green items for the tadpoles such as sliced up zucchini, green grapes sliced in half, peas, broccoli (frozen first), green capsicum (pepper). Just feed small amount of these until they are gone before adding any more.

space to develop - a rough rule-of-thumb is no more than 2 tadpoles per litre of water - so only collect what you have containers to accommodate
sufficient oxygen which can be in form of an acquarium aerator or the right plants with a little sunshine.
Don't let anyone put their hands in the water, it's very bad for them. The type of water is also important, rainwater is the best, you can use tap water but make sure it has no flouride and spring water (has to be natural only don't just buy cheap stuff that says natural spring water)

I know this sounds complicated but it's really not. I have looked after many tadpoles and their heaps of fun to take care of. When they become frogs they will need to be take care of a lot more and it will take some effort and if you don't think you can do that, don't worry just let them go they want freedom anyway. I think what you're doing is great so Goodluck!

How long does frozen baby spinach last in the freezer until it goes bad?

Frozen foods never go bad as in; they can make you sick, but they can lose flavor, moisture, quality and get freezer burn which might make them taste pretty bad. I would think if you froze fresh baby spinach, it would become quite wilted, but not unsafe to eat. Your frozen baby spinach is quite safe to use in your smoothies.

How to keep green color of spinach even after its cooked ?

I boil spinach and then pureed it. But after this process the spinach's green color is not pretty green anymore. what should I do so cooked pureed spinach keeps its green color?

In a chloroplast isolation lab using spinach leaves, why does everything have to be kept cold?

Since your spinach leaves probably aren't attached to the plant any more, the cells in those leaves no longer have access to the nutrients and water in the soil. The cells need nutrients and water from the soil to power the chemical reactions that keep them alive. So now that they've been cut off from the source, they are going to run out of nutrients/water and eventually die.

By keeping the leaves cold, you slow down the rate of all the chemical reactions happening in those cells. Since the reactions are occurring more slowly, it will take longer for the cells to run out of nutrients and water. In essence, you're prolong the cells' lifespans. That gives you more time to work with the leaf and isolate your chloroplasts before all the cells (and organelles within them) die.

Do you lose nutrients in spinach when you boil it?

In a general sense, yes spinach loses some nutrients when you cook it. But raw spinach contains oxalic acid which binds to some nutrients and can interfere with their absorption in the body. Some people also find that they have an uncomfortable reaction to oxalic acid (bumpy or scratchy tongue feeling, or a feeling of having a coating on the tongue). Cooking spinach can alleviate that reaction for most people by breaking down the oxalic acid.Cooking spinach can make these nutrients more readily available for absorption: vitamins A and E, protein, fiber, zinc, thiamin, calcium, and iron. Important carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, and lutein.Raw spinach allows more absorption of these nutrients: folate, vitamin C, niacin, riboflavin, and potassium. It is also important to take into consideration that when you eat raw spinach, the volume of the spinach may lead you to eat a smaller amount. When you cook spinach it wilts down into a much more compact amount of food. So it’s possible you may eat more spinach in a serving if it’s cooked, which would mean potentially more nutrients at one sitting.
