Kelly Blue Book Question

How reliable is Kelly Blue Book?

KBB is a joke and has been for a while. I dont know of a single dealer who uses it any more.

What you dont see in KBB is continuously updating data to reflect current market conditions. Right now, dealers are having a very hard time finding good used cars for their lots. Every auction I attend - and I attend a lot - has cars going for well above MMR (average auction price). Some are going for close to the KBB retail book. Its simple supply v demand and the supply is low.

here is an example from this week's auction. Keep in mind, this is an auction where only dealers buy and sell to get cars for their lots: 1994 Ford Escort wagon - Transmission slipping - Check engine light on - busted windshield. What is that car worth? Realistically, I would never pay more than #400 for that at sale. This one went for $1375. Thats just stupid.

Well, when wholesale values are shooting through the roof, retail follows. If a dealer has to overpay at the auction, the price on the lot will be higher. Unfortunately, KBB will not reflect th is until the book change in about 4 weeks.

If you need a car right now, today, be prepared to pay more than KBB says its worth. However, this is a temporary condition, and values should start coming back in line in about 5-6 months.

ADD @ RObyn - If you really are from KBB, let me say that your system is only used in Karpower labels for windows. I maintain that no dealer I know has used your information as alegitimate source for valuing trade-ins in a very long time. KBB has done a great job of placing themselves as a resource, but the info contained only serves to muddy the waters, confuse consumers, and frustrate dealers.

Kelly Blue Book Question?

Wholesale - what a dealer will give you for trade in. Private party - what you'd pay a private party, because they do NOT have to warranty the car. Dealer - what you'd pay a dealer to sell it to you.

How accurate is Kelly Blue Book?

Not accurate at all. KBB claims to use special algorithms, that have never been disclosed, nor the statistical population and sampling have been revealed. It lists same price for metropolitan driven cars versus non-metro.Generally it is between 20 and 25% higher than market average.

What is a Japan equivalent of Kelly Blue Book Value?

Okay, since people can't seem to stop chiming in about Japan's car culture and instantly assume I have no idea what I'm talking about, I'll elaborate.

Yes, I know how much it costs to own a car in Japan. My uncle owns a parking lot right next to our house and I'm willing to pay the inspection fees. I've already done the research.

I am Japanese. I lived there for over 5 years. Now stop acting like I have no idea what I'm talking about and answer my question. Otherwise get out.

Is Kelly Blue Book Accurate?

Galves is the guide just about everyone uses in the Northeast, and many other parts of the country. It is priced so that a dealer can essentially take the car to auction and break even or make a dollar. Understand that Kbb is paid by the number of clicks it gets on their website, they are going to have a much higher value for you car. Galves is by subscription only.

While it's true it is only a guide, some cars may go a couple grand over galves, but some go under galves. Right now in the market we are in, you can't expect to get any book value for your truck, take the lowest value and subtract a thousand. I suspect your truck is going for 1k under galves current trade value.

Buying Cars: Should I pay less than the Kelley Blue Book value?

bargain ~ n.  A financial exchange whereby each party feels like they totally screwed the otherKelley Blue Book is an excellent resource to ballpark the current value of a vehicle.  But, like all generalizations, there are numerous details for which such a guide simply cannot take into consideration - such as anything which simply was not a direct factory option.  (Customization can hurt a car's value more often than help it.)  There's also the general ambiguity of car condition - a car may look like crap but actually be one of the safest and most reliable cars on the road! The KBB value is a starting point - not an end unto itself - but it remains very useful.  If a particular car has a KBB value around $14,000 and someone's offering to sell for $10,000 that's roughly a third of the car's value they're abandoning - might mean that there's something wrong with the car that they're trying to hide, or might mean that they simply need to get rid of it fast (for personal reasons, such as a cross-country move) and are willing to sell for less than the car is actually worth. It's always a case of Buyer Beware when buying a car - new or used - but that's no reason to pass up a great deal.  I've bought cars in the past for WAY below KBB value when all that was wrong was fouled spark plugs.
