Why do some dogs kill and eat their puppies?

Unfortunately, nature at work is oftentimes neither cute nor cuddly and a mother eating her young is a prime example.  It's something that occurs frequently in the wild. There are several reasons why this could happen with a dog and her pups. The main one is the mother senses something is "wrong" with a puppy.  This can include a congenital anomaly or a puppy that was stillborn.  The mother's instinct is to rid the litter of the unhealthy puppy to give the remaining young the best chance for survival.  In this instance, it's not necessarily a sign that the dog is unfit to raise the puppies.    It can happen if the dog is in a stressful environment.  This could be a loud shelter or a busy home.  Too much human attention too soon is another cause.  Inexperience is another.  Stress or fear can manifest as aggressive behavior and she could easily direct it at the puppies. If the dog has mastitis (a painful inflammation of the nipples), the intense pain of nursing could cause her to kill the puppies.   Owners should regularly monitor their dog for this condition to avert any tragic outcomes. Finally, some dogs just aren't cut out to be mothers; they're overwhelmed by birthing a litter, and the flood of hormones can cause unpredictable behaviors.   Sometimes, after a day or two of supervision, the mothering instincts could kick in, but it's by no means guaranteed.A veterinarian I worked with offered one possible remedy to clients in this predicament: remove the puppies from the mother until it was time for their feeding; muzzle the dog, position the puppies to nurse and remove them afterwards.  If after a couple of weeks, the aggressive behavior is still present, the owners must resign themselves to bottle feeding the puppies or finding a surrogate.Any dog that shows aggression towards its puppies should be spayed as soon as possible.

Can i use loreal for kids shampoo on my dog?

Human and dog shampoos are made from the same ingredients. What is important is that the product be pH balanced. "pH balanced" simply means that the product is NEUTRAL, and a neutral shampoo will NOT harm a dog's or person's hair or skin. Some of the finest dog salons use human hair products.

You can find out if the shampoo is pH balanced by calling the toll free number on the label. Some shampoos even say that they are pH balanced on the labels. You can also find the phone numbers to call (usually) at the brand's web site.

If you are desperate and short on time, I'd say go ahead and use the L'Oreal. Keep it out of the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Rinse it off completely. Towel the dog as dry as you can then use a hair dryer set on low, so as not to burn the dog.

How do u get rid of fleas cheaply and kid friendly?

I highly recommend that you use head lice shampoo on your dogs. It is VERY effective at killing fleas. I like using that to kill fleas instead of using the common dog flea shampoo that is often too watery and has to be used more than once to kill the fleas. Head lice shampoo contains the same stuff that flea shampoo contains, except its stronger. Your dog's skin will not be harmed in anyway shape or form.
Any head lice shampoo will do, but I think that the NIX brand head lice shampoo is the best.
This is safe to use around your children because it is often used ON children who are sent home from school because of head lice, or the schools use them on the kid and send him or her back to class.

When do cats tend to eat their kittens? Do they eat even after the kittens are 3-4 days old?

Mother cats don’t “tend” to eat their kittens. It is not a tendency or a typical event. When it happens, it is an unusual occurrence and it usually happens because something stressed the mother and she may not have felt that she could raise all of the litter so she picked the ones that she thought were more likely to survive and concentrated on them. Either she didn’t have enough milk or she was too tired from repeated birthings or she may have suspected that some of the kittens were sick and would not have survived anyway, or she simply was too stressed to handle the whole litter. When she kills (or allows to die) the kittens and then eats them, she is doing it to get rid of a health hazard, a decomposing body in the litter. She is not eating it for nutrition, unless she is in a situation where she is starving. She is not doing it to be cruel. She reduces the size of the litter down to what she considers to be manageable, for the good of the group. It usually happens when the kittens are tiny newborns and it looks more or less like when the mother eats the afterbirth (placenta). The less stressful the environment when the mother cat gives birth, the greater the chance of survival the kittens have, so please give her her space. Mother cats are not vicious; they are victims of their instincts and their hormones during pregnancy and delivery. And they are not human beings and should not be judged as human.

Why do (male) cats kill the kittens after they are born?

As others have said in their answers - some male cats may kill kittens to induce the female to come into heat, or to reduce potential competition in their territory. These are behaviors humans have noticed in some animal species, including domestic cats. Some male cats, especially if unaltered, might even attack kittens when they are old enough to run and play and eat. However, not all male cats kill kittens. And when they do, there may be additional reasons. Cats who do not have a maternal drive, whether male or female, may kill very young kittens simply because they resemble prey. And though I wouldn’t count on this - some male cats actually have gentle, supportive behaviors when it comes to babies. Some will even nurture them. Like us humans, cats can have a variety of reactions to circumstances. But when it comes to raising babies, you want to be VERY careful. A mother cat with kittens NEEDS to have a safe, preferably quiet, private place where her kittens are undisturbed. Having other cats around, and maybe even any humans she isn’t totally comfortable with, can cause her a great deal of stress. And she is likely to fiercely attack an approaching cat. Both adult cats could get injured. And the stressful situation may get her very worked up and even cause her to neglect or accidentally harm her kittens. So I recommend keeping a male cat and a new family apart, until the kittens are old enough to be very carefully and attentively introduced, and the mom isn’t as worried about him. Here are more related answers -Sabira Woolley's answer to A cat just had its babies in my home. Why does my cat keep bringing her kittens to my bed? I let her stay with them on my bed, but I wonder why. She had a lot of pillows and sheets on her bed, why bring them to mine?

Cats are very social animals, just in a different way than dogs or humans. I always had dogs when my cats had kittens and the same thing repeated itself again and again. People had told me that the mother cat would find some inaccessible place to have her kittens because there was a dog around. Our cats always trusted our dogs enough to have their kittens in our bedroom closet or somewhere similar where the dog could have easily gotten at them. We observed our to-be mommy and my wife laid out sheets and blankets at the places the cat was exploring. She eventually chose a spot and had the kittens in front of our eyes with the dog also present. As soon as a kitten came out and was licked clean, we picked it up and let our dog smell it and lick it.After about a week, the mother moved her kittens a short distance to another spot, also easily accessible. Our dog usually helped with the move. It is quite a sight to see a 64 Kg Landseer walk by with a kitten in its mouth. When they were really little she would carry them between her teeth rather than by the scruff of the neck.In this way cats had their “pride”, dogs had their packs and humans had their communities. Our dogs even took the kittens out and taught them how to hunt. Cats are very adept at fitting themselves into a social situation or, often, fitting the social situation to themselves. Our cats never brought their kittens into our bed, because that was the dog´s territory. They respected that. Later the older kittens would jump onto the bed when baby sitting services were needed.

Do male cats kill kittens?

It is instinctive for a feral entire male cat, a ”tomcat,” to kill any nest of kittens it comes across. This is a breeding behavior, intended to make the now-kittenless female come into heat sooner. You can usually tell a tomcat killed a kitten because they often do it by biting the heads, puncturing the skulls, and they do not eat them or carry them off.The theory is that the tomcat doesn’t “know” these kittens are his, but he does ‘know’ that the next litter will be. Thus, the pressures of natural Selection make him “want” to perpetuate his genes by getting this female to come into heat and mating with her.I do not believe neutered males do this, but I don’t know for sure.
