What to do about an 11 week old kitten with fleas?
No, he's not too young to start him on topical flea medication. However, there is ALWAYS the risk of allergy to topicals OR flea collars so you'll need to keep a close watch on him for the first few days of using 'topicals' such as Frontline or Advantix. Bathing him every DAY isn't going to solve you problem. I'm sorry. Save yourself the time, money and headache of weekly bathing, as well as the trauma to your cat. Topicals can be bought for $10 to $12 at most any vets office. It's important that you treat your house as well because although you may not see evidence of infestation now, you are no doubt going to have an infestation very shortly because he's brought them into your home. As for the new cat. If at ALL possible I would suggest using a topical on this one half an hour or so BEFORE you bring him into the house (if he's over eight weeks) to prevent adding to the fleas already in your home.
6 week old kitten with fleas?
Your vet can properly flea treat her. None of the over the counter stuff you can buy is safe for use in kittens younger than 12 weeks, but actually most of that stuff isn't safe - period. The flea products made by Hartz, Sargent's, Zodiac, etc contain ingredients that can cause seizures and death in adult cats, and are especially lethal to kittens. Bathing her frequently like this isn't a good idea either - you're going to dry out her skin and all bathing does is wash the live fleas off. It's important to get her a flea treatment, as fleas can quite literally suck the life out of a kitten. They cause tapeworm, and flea bite anemia. Call the vet and make an appointment to take her in. Take a stool sample with you as well, and she can be wormed at the same time he flea treats her. Pick up a safe flea treatment for your dog while you're at the vet, as he should be treated as a precaution as there are bound to be fleas in the house.
My kitten has fleas very very badly what can i do?
At 5 weeks old, it's safe to use Revolution flea treatment on a kitten with vet approval. You don't say how old the kitten is. A flea comb will get out the fleas too. Dip the comb in a bowl of alcohol after each stroke to kill the fleas you get off. Tell your mom that any other kitten can get fleas as well and to think about the fact that pets aren't disposable. Once you make the commitment you stick with your pet if you're responsible. Your kitten will need to be checked for tapeworms as well since tapeworms come from ingesting fleas while grooming. Clean her bedding area as well to get any fleas who have infested the bedding. If she's under 8 weeks old, don't use any flea product (shampoo, etc) on her.
Kitten & Fleas Problem!!!!!!?
I BEG YOU TO DIFFER from the answers i've so far seen here. Bathing new borne kittens for fleas is not an option NOR is Advantage or Front line...they are not of significant weight at this point. Call your vet or any vet & ask if you cn pick up "CAPSTAR"...It is a pill that you can give the mother cat that she will secrete through her milk to the kittens that safely kills fleas...Nothing else is safer. Please trust me & consult your vet !!!!
How to get rid of fleas on a 9 week old kitten?
Advantage makes a topical flea treatment for kittens. It will kill the fleas within a day. If you aren't comfortable with that, you can give your cat a bath with dawn detergent. Wet the kitten, lather up with dawn soap and wrap in a warm towel for 5 minutes. Then rinse very well and remove any remaining stunned fleas with a tweezer. Dry very well with a warm towel and keep the kitten warm until it is totally dry. Change the bedding and vacuum the area well. Then the kitten needs to be treated for tapeworms, the end result of fleas.
I have a 5 week old kitten that has fleas.. what can you do to rid them without hurtingher???
Advantage, Frontline & Revolution come in "kitten strength" versions and are generally safe to use on a 5 week old kitten. I would prefer if you checked with a vet first just to make sure it is indeed fleas and that the kitten has no other conditions that would prohibit use of one of the above. As an alternative, your vet can provide some special shampoo and a fine tooth flea comb. You could then use the shampoo to wash the kitten and comb out the flea dirt. However, you would have to be very careful to keep her warm while she dries off after the bath. Also, at that age, kittens are often tough to give a bath too. In about another week, when your kitten is 6 weeks, you can pretty safely use most flea treatments. However, please don't use the Hertz brands available at grocery stores as they are not effective and a waste of money .. and lots of kittens and cats develop skin allergies. Thank you for taking such excellent care of this kitten. I wish you many years of health and fun together.
Fleas on 4 week old kittens?
Yea, Dawn dish soap is your best bet. Also, many people don't realize that drowning the fleas does more than killing them with the soap. After soaping up your kittens, try to let them soak in the water for a little bit while combing them with a flea comb (buy these at any pet store, we got ours in the pet aisle at Target). It takes a lot of hard work but it's worth it in the end. And don't forget- no flea shampoo or flea medicine until the kitten is AT LEAST 12 weeks old! Good luck =)
What are the risks of fleas on newborn kittens?
Very young kittens can weaken quickly and die when infested with fleas. But insecticides are also unsafe for them. You can give the nursing mother an oral flea medication called Capstar, which will kill all adult fleas on her body within 30 minutes (It can be ground up and mixed into wet cat food). Capstar is said to be safe for kittens once they weigh at least 2 lbs. But not before. If the kittens are badly infested, you can wash them in warm water with a very mild soap. But be sure to dry them quickly and keep them very warm. Kittens cannot control their own body temperatures for the first 2–3 weeks of life, and you must avoid letting them get chilled. (That is why they roll all together into a little ball whenever their mom leaves, to keep the heat they have until her return.) Also, strive not to stress out their mother while bathing them. You will have to rid the house of fleas without exposing the kittens to poison. Unfortunately, once an animal brings fleas in, there are usually more of them in the home than are apparent. You can clean the bedding and vacuum everywhere, to get the eggs and larva that hide in carpets and pet beds. You can rub some Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth into the pet bedding, and wherever the cat might have shed some fleas. It will kill the fleas, but will only harm mammals if they inhale it (the dust is bad for lungs). So try to rub it into materials, carpets and fur, rather than flinging it about in the air near breathing animals. Also, if you use too much, it can clog your vacuum cleaner. You can fill a pie pan with water and add some dish soap, and leave it on the floor with a light about 1 1/2 to 2 feet above the middle, pointing down. At night the heat from the bulb will attract the fleas. They will jump in the water, and quickly die from exposure to the soap. Can You Give Capstar to Newborn Kittens? (No! But it is OK for the mom.)When I lived in a neighborhood that had flea problems, I learned that if I put topical Frontline plus or Advantage on my dog, it would clear up all the fleas in the house. The cats would clear up just from proximity and contact with the dog’s hair. If you have a dog, or another cat who doesn’t have babies, maybe that can work for you as well. There are formulations for cats, and for dogs.I answered - “What are the risks of fleas on newborn kittens?”
