What are some good magazines to send my horror novella?

The market changes all the time so check online and read submission guidelines carefully to be sure you find the right publication for your work. A publisher dealing in Gothic romance-horror won’t appreciate violent graphic werewolf tales, etc. Good luck.

How much do short stories pay on average?

A few hundred to a few thousand?? You are joking right? There are 4 ways to sell short stories. To magazines, to e books, to anthologies and in contests.

In the first three ways you will find that pay for a story ranges from 5 bucks to about 25 bucks or between 1 and 5 cents a word. The reason for doing anthologies isn't to get rich, it is to get your name out there. Some pay nothing more than a copule copies of the book you're in.

Of course magazines like Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, GQ etc. pay a great deal more. However, they primarily deal with major authors and they hire them to write specific stories. Very rarely do major magazines accept a pitch from an unknown and tell them to go ahead with it.

As for contests, there are a few legit ones. Check with Absolute Write Water Cooler Bewares and Background Checks and Preditors and Editors. There are contests that pay 1,000 like Glimmer Train but they are very very hard to win. They are almost impossible to even sell a story to.

No, sorry but you will not be making thousands or even hundreds selling your stories. PJ M - a regular contributor here is a fairly well known anthology contributor. I have known him for several years now. I don't think he has ever gotten more than 50 bucks and a couple copies for a story. But it does get his name out there.

When publishing short stories, is it better to target magazines or anthologies?

Anthologies are assembled by their editors. Generally, the stories are selected from other published works. Few magazines run short stories anymore. Atlantic, for example used to run 50-60 annually. Now it runs one per issue. Magazines line Atlantic, the New Yorker, Playboy, etc. are more interested in works from well-known authors and generally do not accept submissions from unpublished writers. Writers of short stories know all this. They also know that a short story is the most difficult prose form to tackle. A short story is not about length. It has several restrictions/requirements to be called a "short story." My advice to you is to do the research. Then you can revise your submissionplans  accordingly.

Any good horror novels written in Spanish?

You should read the works of Horacio Quiroga. He has been compared to Edgar Allan Poe, and I concur. I have only ever read his translated works, but his originals were in Spanish/ he was originally from Uruguay but lived in Argentina. He wrote many short stories. I recommend El perro rabioso (The Rabid dog)

Hope it was helpful.

How much does Stephen King get paid for a short story?

Because of his success he can charge more than the average writer. I know you asked about short stories, but I've *heard* that he commands 50% in royalties for his novels, whereas the average author gets anywhere from 7-10%.

The only way to truly know is if SK told you himself, because this is otherwise proprietary info between the author, his agent, and the company that paid him. This question is equivalent to asking how much someone gets paid at their job; you won't know unless they told you, so it's not public info.

Advice on writing a short story?

I have to write a short story. Problem is, I've never written one before, I don't write fiction, I'm not a great writer of any kind, and I really don't have much of an idea on what to write. I don't even read short stories that often. But write one I must.

The good news is, it's not due until May 1st, so I have some time to work with, although it won't all be devoted to writing and rewriting said story.

Now, to the writers and short story aficionados, what should I know beforehand? About brainstorming, planning, plotting, writing, editing, anything and everything? Do I need to eat special waffles, or inject myself with creative juices each morning? Will wearing my lucky rocket ship underwear help me get good ideas, or will I have to do handstands for that?

Thank you.
