Lebron, it's really not even close. Lebron was the more efficient scorer, better overall defender, way better passer, and has significantly more impressive individual accolades. As far as scoring goes, it's a comparison of quantity vs very slightly less quantity but much more quality. Kobe averaged a few more PPG in his prime, but his career high in FG% was 46.9%. Lebron's career low (not counting his rookie season) was 47.2%. Going a bit more in depth, Kobe's TS% in his prime fluctuated between 55% and 58%, above average, but nothing special. Lebron was sometimes in the same boat as Kobe in the ~55%, but he got his at times as high as 65%. I can't really communicate how much better that is than anything Kobe has ever done. Kobe scored more, Lebron scored better. Similarly, on defense, Kobe had a well deserved reputation as a fantastic lock down defender, but his defense steadily decreased as his career wore on, and was completely gone by the time he finally had his injury. Lebron was never quite the on ball defender Kobe was, but his defensive versatility made up for it, almost winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. It also goes to show how inconsistent Kobe was on the defensive end. People often complain about Lebron's defensive effort, but it far exceeds Kobe's over the course of their respective careers. Of course, even if you think those two categories are close, passing isn't. Lebron is one of the best passers in the league, Kobe thought of passing as a last resort. The main argument Kobe supposedly has is rings. That ignores that Kobe won 3 of his rings as the second best player on his team, evidenced by Lebron having more Finals MVP awards. It ignores Lebron has 4 MVP awards to Kobe's 1. And it ignores a season can be valuable to a player's career even if you don't win the championship. Kobe and LeBron both in their primes are almost equal since they balance each other out via their different defensive skills. Kobe is better on ball defender via 1 on 1 but isnt as good as LeBron in support Defense which LeBron is nearly the best for his position, all time. LeBron in his prime was so much greater than 100% of players (athletically), that in his prime, at full effort could stop anyone in the current NBA at ANY position. Kobe on the othet hand you put on their best scorer and tell him to stop him. Lebron can essentially play team defense by himself when he had the stamina.In the end though I choose Kobe because of, once again, the mind state, and the ability to shut down the opposing team star without any team help. Its appealing to have a guy be able to cover all positions, but once again Lebrons mind state seems to be in support D mode and doesn't really play defense to “shut down” an individual player. Lebron needs a 1 on 1 defender so he can provide the support Defense.Kobe all the way.
