What is the largest fresh water lake in India? How did it form?

I have replied this question in another question asked only yesterday. In India, the lake Vembanad kayal or kol in Kerala is the largest freshwater lake. It has the length of 96.5 km and width of 14 km. Its area is 2033.02 sq.km. Only problem of this lake was it was connected to the sea at one place resulting in the ingress of saltwater. The Government of Kerala has now constructed a salt barrier to prevent the entry of the salt water. This barrier is called “Thannermukkam salt barrier.” I could not find any record about the origin of this lake. However, I feel that the drainage from the western ghat ranges within Kerala flowed down the slope but got prevented to meet sea by the depressions along the coastal region. This formed the elongated lake in due course. Only at one place, it has a minor connection with the sea. Incidentally, The state of Kerala has a very high rain fall.
