What are major misunderstandings about software development?
That I can tell you how long it will takeI can’t, but guess what, neither can anyone else. It doesn’t mean I’m bad at my job, it just means I’m being honest. You may be able to find someone who’ll give you an answer, but it will be as accurate as predicting a thunderstorm six months in advance. Some reasons why I can’t tell you how long it will take are:Your requirements are extremely vague and incomplete.Your requirements are complete, but near the end you’ll realize they don’t reflect what you actually want and we would have been better off going with scenario 1 and making everything up along the way.Software development is an art, and like a painting or sculpture, I’ve never created this one before. It’s not paint by numbers.I’ve actually found that open-ended ill-defined projects often have a very good end result because people come up with creative ideas along the way after seeing the direction things are going. I think the scenario worth considering is to super-insulate one room, and let the rest of the house go cold. Like 40 F for the kitchen, bedrooms, everything except the "warm room". Using solar electricity is stored in a battery is about the worst way to generate heat. Since sunshine is already warm, you would use it to heat the room directly through windows and skylights which could be sealed with insulation at night. Or you could use a solar collector to heat water or air. You would also want a lot of thermal mass (like barrels of water) in the room so it wouldn't cool down too much when the sun is down. But even if you don't heat by solar, you'll still save money with your single space heater plugged into the wall. If you have more money, super-insulate the whole house. Otherwise it's just leaking dollars.
