If you have a bit more time, and are interested in a little nighttime sightseeing, a good place to stay would be in downtown Taipei, near the Taipei Railway Station. This is a nice, active nighttime area, with shopping, eating, and hotels (international chains and local walk-in type hotels), all within easy walking distance of CKS Memorial Park. US citizens do not require a visa for a stay of up to 30 days, Philippine citizens require a visa. It's true that hitchhiking is not a common thing in Taiwan. However, if you are a foreigner looking lost, and you happen to run into a nice Taiwanese driving into Taipei (I’d suggest asking for directions at the entrance of the parking lot), I would say you have 50% of chance getting a ride. The only thing that immediately comes to mind, if you’re there during the hours it’s open and have enough time, is the aviation museum right on the grounds of the airport.I had overnight layovers twice several years ago, and one morning went there with a friend who was teaching at an English-language kindergarten nearby. The exhibits weren’t half bad, and the price of admission was really low.
