Leaking Toilet Sat On It Too Hard And No Clue What To Look For To Fix It.

Can one leaking toilet cause my water bill to quadruple?

Hi Jair, this is Mike with The Home Depot.

Many water departments often estimate water usage if the meter is not accessible or if your usage has been the same for many months. In your case, a running toilet will increase your bill, but not by a factor of four.

Ask your water utility to do a second meter read to determine if the original read was accurate. Also request a leak check of the meter and your water service.

I suspect the meter read was wrong, but a running toilet will increase your bill. Get that toilet fixed, wasting water does no good for anyone.

I have included below a link on toilet repair.

I hope this answers your question

How can you clean and kill mold?

I'd get professionals in to remove the mold. The problem sounds extensive.

If you are tempted to tackle it yourself, be sure to wear good face masks. You're quite right to be concerned about the mold spores become airborne. Not great for you but also you don't want them floating to other parts of your home and taking up residence and creating new colonies! So containment is vital. Seal off the room, from other parts of your house and open a window . You can tackle the mold on hard non porus surfaces with a equal mix of bleach and water and leaving the area to dry thoroughly. At lot of people say bleach doesn't work on mold but it has worked for me in th past. The key is to also remove or elimnate the conditions that allow the mold to return - so proper ventilation etc.

The carpet is a major issue. I'd be tempted to rip it out and start with new. Failing that you may want to get a carpet company to come in and clean it and treat it for mold. Then after the initial 2-4 day drying period, leave a dehumidifier and ozone air cleaner running 24 hrs for the next month or so and monitor daily.

Can one leaking toilet cause my water bill to quadruple?

You may not be able to see water on the floor or other indications that your toilet is leaking externally, but it can be leaking from the water closet into the bowl and slipping out to the sewer at a constant rate that you cannot see.
To see if the seal is in need of replacement inside the upper part of the toilet (tank or water closet) lift the top and add about 4 drops of food coloring. If you see the food coloring in the bowl after about 5 to 20 minutes, you have an internal leak inside the toilet and the water is simply leaking into the bowl past the seal and into the sewer.
If so, replace the seal inside the water closet.

If you do not see the food coloring in the bowl, your toilet is fine and could be a leaking water supply to the house. The city inspector can help you determine if this is true. Generally all water mains are metered. So if you are not using any water in the home at all (after checking for leaky toilets, hot water heaters and faucets on both inside and out) and the meter is registering that water is being used by the meter, then you probably have an outside leak.
To do this, locate the water meter and write down the number. Check back every 1/2 hour and see what it shows. If it shows you are using water when you are in fact not, then it is definitely a leaking supply line in which the city should be responsible.

How to fix clogged toilet nearly overflows, drains out?

When you got it say 2 flushes full of water, a good non cracked plunger is stuffed into the outlet(the bottom of the toilet and you plunge down a "shot of water". Pull plunger up so more water gets inside it and give it another shot of forced water . This should clear the line of whatever is in the way so that a regular flush works with one press of the lever. After all you are dumping the contents of the toilet tank(which is like 2 gallons of water) . Most times, lets say 95% of the time the former user used way too much TP to wipe their butt 2% try to flush down maxi-pads 1% the whole baby diaper: instead of just the poo in the diaper and an unknown amount have drugs in a plastic drug bag that they stuck in the wrong place(tape to inside of toilet tank- not bowl ! ) Cel phones have been known to call the plumber with "speed dial" when they are in trouble...unfortunately Long distance charges apply to the owner of the phone as the call is made to a Kenya, Aftrica plumbing shop. and he is a slow talker. I was going to say that the roof stack is probably plugged, as that is the vacuum break but seeing as you have other toilets that work normally >they would all use the same stack< It is not normal for them to plug like EVER. Nothing will nest in that pipe as it smell's like sewer. I have seen it where Q-tip swab sticks (they used to make them from wood sticks) and one got stuck and soon then another and then it made a criss-cross pattern and plugged the hole. . Really like winning the lottery. The chances of one sticking sideways is way past a trillion to one odds of happening and yet one did and soon it was2 then 22 plus TP. and everything associated with what is flushed down but is bigger than water molecules.. Had to take the toilet off to find that happened, and then just broke it through and down it all went. Put on a new wax ring and put the toilet back on and it worked like it was suppose to. The home owner got to see what "they had done" and never used the toilet for #2 again but continued to throw in the Q tips and flush them down. . Some people you can train, some you cannot. This was a "NOT" situation. Or septic tank is full - and I mean REALLY FULL. Have you not noticed how clean your clothes have not been as of late? Dirty dishes is not because of hard water, but the other water.

Can turning off hot water heater work to fix a bad hot water leak in bathroom tub faucet?

Why don't you just fix it? You seem to be able to work a computer so you could look up how to fix it. That is easy to do. Simply because you have no husband doesn't mean things can not get fixed. You have just as many arms, leg, hands, fingers and intelligence as a husband does so why would it be you could not fix it? If a another person, whether a man or a woman can fix it, so can you! You are not too ignorant to learn you know. Go to this site,"Danco.com" and they show you step by step, one thing at a time, on how to fix anything like that. What to use, what you need to fix it like a professional. Real easy to do for a man or a woman whether married or not. I fix everything in my house and install everything also. When my husband was alive, I fixed everything then. He couldn't fix things but he sure knew how to cook! And no, don't go turning the water heater on and off. You would then have to relight the pilot every time you did and that can be dangerous to do. My sisters blew up in her face and she got burnt real bad. You either learn how to fix it for yourself, or spend the money to have a plumber do it for you.
I'm sorry if this answer was a little crude but woman thinking they can't fix something because they don't have a husband or a man just makes me mad. One is not smarter than the other.

It simple to test.If you accelerate and blue smoke continues until RPM is high all the time these are rings. If you see smoke just few seconds after acceleration these are valve seals. The more idling time the more blue cloud with acceleration also indicates the valve seals are bad. But they are still allow only very small amount of oil to leak into manifold. And it's accumulating there until you push pedal and all that oil burns quickly and then exhaust is clean. The most accurate way to test rings to give some load to engine. Let someone follow you until you accelerate or going on low RPM and higher gear. If rings are bad exhaust would be significantly visible. Thanks
