Leaky Valve Cover Gaskets

Leak in my valve cover gasket?

The valve cover is the cover on the engine head. The gasket is the rubber seal that seals the cover to the head. When this is leaking, it causes oil to leak out of the engine. Depending on the severity of the leak, this could cause some minor problems, or no problems at all. I am currently dealing with a car that is leaking through the valve cover gaskets onto my exhaust, the oil then burns, causing smoke and potentially fire. I will be replacing this ASAP. The biggest risk of this would be fire, but this is highly unlikely. 2-3 weeks may be fine, may not, depending on how bad the leak it. Most minor leaks just build up gunk with dirt and dust, and somewhat seal themselves. If you don't know what to look for to see how bad it is, and where it is leaking, I would get it fixed as soon as you can. Replacing the gasket is usually a simply and cheap job.

Valve Cover Gasket Leak?

Hi, I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado. I noticed that I had a valve cover gasket leak so I took it in to get it fixed. The dealership charged me $600. But when I pulled into my driveway I noticed I was leaking oil, and a lot of it. The whole bottom of my truck was covered in oil. They said they would replace it and said it might have been a defective part. What other parts of the truck could this mishap have broken/messed with? I've heard that it could have effected the intake manifold but I'm not to sure.

P.S. I also felt a lack of power while I was driving home.

What are some problems with the valve cover gasket?

I just repaired a super fun problem on mine - and it had nothing to do with leaking! On my truck there are wires under the valve covers that connect to the injectors and glow plugs . These wires need to get outside the engine to connect those components to the rest of the wiring harness and eventually the ECU. The way they do this is by passing through a specially designed valve cover gasket with electrical connectors molded into it. Something caused one of the wires to melt and burn the connector, which released burnt plastic gunk into the other pins, fouling it up enough to lose connection. Without this connection I only had injectors firing on one bank of cylinders, essentially turning the V8 into a 4-cylinder. Luckily the gaskets themselves were ok, it was just the internal wiring harness that needed to be replaced. These gaskets are made to be reusable. On most vehicles though there are no wires under there and the gaskets are not made to be reusable. They eventually just break down and leak, but it’s a fairly simple replacement.

If the gasket seal to the valve cover is bad, then can the coolant leak into the oil pan?

The valve cover gasket should just keep engine oil from leaking out onto the engine and the ground. However, the head gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, and intake manifold gasket all could have coolant ports that could allow that. Make sure you have the right gasket identified. I've had that happen on an engine, and it's a very expensive repair.

What's the cost of replacing a leaky valve cover gasket in San Francisco? This mechanic quoted $650 but I read online that the cost of parts should be about $35 and it should be only about 2 hours labor. 2003 Subaru Outback H6 3.0

There’s usually a reason behind big prices for seemingly little fixes, this one has an explanation. As you may know, the majority of (if not all) Subarus use a flat-4 engine, meaning the valve covers are on the sides, rather than the top like most engines.Because of the cramped space, accessories and their drive systems, and all the other useless crap that car manufacturers are hocking into engine bays to take up space these days, this makes a valve cover on a Subaru very hard to get to.So hard, in fact, that you sometimes have to lift the entire engine out of the bay to get to either of the valve covers. That’s where your $650 is going after you’ve bought your $35 gasket. as for twho hours of labor? You’d be extremely lucky to have it done that fast.If you’re still convinced that the mechanic you’ve gotten the quote from is too high, go to another. You might get a slighy better price, but chances are they’ll take one look at that Subie and quote you a similar price. Hunt around though, you might catch a good deal.
