Do liberals believe in a limited government?
I’m both liberal and progressive.I believe in limiting government.Every single liberal and progressive I know believes the same.Every single conservative I know believes in limiting government.There’s not a really big difference between these two camps on how far government’s reach.The real difference between those two camps, conservative vs liberal, in my opinion, liberals and progressives believe more in limiting government’s strength when it comes to the personal choices we make, those that don’t negatively affect others, we don’t think government should have reach.We do not like a stringent limit on government when it comes to non people.Like corporations, they get less rights and more government regulations than individuals as far as liberals are concerned.I think conservatives conflate people with corporations, believing the corporate marketing which promotes “if we limit government for people we need to limit government for corporations too”Liberals find quite a distinction between people and corporate.Every single conservative I know, including those claiming libertarian principles, believe in some kind of government control over the social/economic discourse.That is what a government is for after all.The answer really is, just about everyone you can find believes in limiting government.The depth and breath of those limits is the rub.
What is the rationale behind the government’s involvement in economics in a social democracy?
When a government decides that it must give its citizens a certain level of benefits and guarantee a certain standard of living, it must manage the national economy based on supporting that standard.... rather than managing it based solely on promoting growth, expansion, etc. But this need for control extends far beyond the "economy"... If you notice, those nations so often hailed as having "successful socialism" by American liberals all have cultural controls that would be unacceptedbly "conservative" to most Americans... ...Mandatory national language... Mandatory national service ... State-controlled access to University-level education ... Exclusionary immigration policies ... State-controls on employment and job mobility.. These are just some of the things that "successful" social democracies demand in order to keep their systems running.
Why is economic liberalism generally unpopular in Indonesia?
Liberalism im economic policy promoting strong sense of private ownership, higher dose of individualism culture toward society. Indonesian society dominantly low individuality culture, higher dose of communalism and public ownership. So, highly likely Indonesians choose into socialism with universal basic income, than free market liberalism, by culture.That’s why economic liberalism generally unpopular in Indonesia, because deep inside our daily habit, we are communal society. Why do people think government regulation of industry is bad?
That's the biggest myth I've ever seen in my life. Apparently, the lack of regulation has ironically destroyed the economy in this country. Have you ever worked in a restaurant? Tell me what would happen if the health department didn't exist? I can tell you, that as a person that used to manage one, you wouldn't want to eat out anymore. If you left it up to the owners or managers to keep their establishment or kitchen clean, or maintain temperatures or quality, most of these places would be nasty. There would be a lot more sick or dead people out there. It costs money to keep those places clean. You wouldn't believe what some of these companies would do if they could get away with it. Now imagine what the airline industry would be like without regulation...trains, taxis, your banks... As we've all seen with the financial industry, deregulation is a dream. You can either do the right thing and support government regulation, or stupidly not support it and wise up or keep sucking it up when you get robbed, sick or die.
What is the difference between Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian, and Socialist?
Conservatives generally believe in small government, but tend to be more heavy-handed on foreign policy, being supporters of a large military and favor being interventionalist in world affairs. Especially in the US, they tend to be very nationalistic, and tend to let their ideas of morality influence their politics, which is why they oppose things like abortion and gay marriage, right or wrong. Liberals are supporters of large government. They tend to portray themselves as compassionate and fair-minded, and tend to champion underdog groups: the poor, minorities, etc. They also claim to value human life regardless of whether the person is good or bad, but tend to be pro-choice in contrast to that. They believe government has a duty to support its people, and champion welfare and subsidy programs. They are not very nationalistic, don't usually believe in "American Exceptionalism", and tend to favor collective rights over individuals. Libertarians believe in as small a government as possible, in every way. They oppose government interference in abortion, gay marriage, gun rights, and financial regulation. Generally disliked by both liberals and conservatives, they believe in deregulating virtually everything as much as possible to a point short of anarchy. They tend to distrust the government at least and hate it at most. Socialists are extreme militant left-wingers. They believe in a "command economy", where the government controls virtually everything, personal freedoms are severely limited in the name of equality, and "the collective" is championed above all. Most socialists support using government coercion in order to suppress dissent, and believe in forcing change through a future socialist revolution in order to reset the country, destroy the upper and ruling class(along with any political opposition) and shape the country to their tastes.
