Does Browns University offer distance learning courses?

Do you mean Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island? To be honest, I’m not sure why this question was directed to me. I have no connection to higher education or distance learning apart from having studied for an undergraduate degree with The Open University in the UK. So I’m not really the best person to answer your question.I can only suggest you look on their website or contact the University for more information about their courses / admission criteria / fees. You might like to try starting here: Online and Blended Learning at Brown University. And you can search for courses here: Courses @ Brown and scroll down to see the Advanced Search options, where you can select Online Only.I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Which universities have distance learning courses (online learning courses) in US or UK that I can take, throughout course get the certificate and Bachelor degree?

There are an increasing number of UK universities which provide online degrees (Bachelor and Masters) to a greater or lesser extent, but of course it depends what you want to study.Start by doing a search based on the discipline you are interested. For UK Universities I would recommend you first search the UCAS site - this holds information on every single higher education course available in the UK. I’m not sure what the equivalent is (if there is one) for the States but I know Penn have a “World Campus”.I also googled “Online degrees UK” and got everything from the Open University to Oxford! You can do the equivalent for US and when I searched I found University of Florida and all kinds of things. Personally I received my BSc with the Open University and I did my Masters with the Ulster University and would recommend either institution.Hope that helps get you started.

How are so many traditional British universities offering distance-learning degrees, including masters and Ph.D.s, whereas American ones aren't?

I don’t know of UK universities offering PhDs online. The PhD is a mentorship, so it is very challenging to do at a distance. Some schools in the US (e.g., Nova Southeastern) offer them with very limited residency commitments, but they aren’t full distance-based. There are some limited fully online programs, but I don’t know that it can work. One reason that they don’t really exist in the US is that we don’t need them. There are plenty of people (international students, if there aren’t sufficient numbers of American students) who will work on a PhD full time. These students are essential to the research productivity of faculty, at least in the sciences. The completion rate and research success rate are very, very low; making an online program would be far worse. We produce an excess of PhDs relative to need in most disciplines, anyway.Master’s degrees… there’s debate. I’m wary of online degrees in general, but a master’s degree with no real, substantive research component would be the best fit. There are a growing number of coursework-based master’s degrees in the US, even from prestigious schools. I suspect completion rates are abysmal, but since they require very little faculty oversight for individuals, it’s not a big deal. James Leland Harper promotes Georgia Tech’s program of an Online Master of Science in Computer Science every chance he gets. I don’t know anyone who has completed it (I’m sure some have; I just haven’t encountered anyone who has even tried). The people I know who have completed online master’s degrees have not found them to be helpful in finding employment. All of these programs would need to create sufficient revenue to garner students to cover the cost of creating and sustaining such a program. Unlike most types of education, the upfront cost is much, much higher than long-term costs. If the programs prove successful, other institutions will jump in if they can.

I would like to do an MBA by research. Is there an institute offering this online?

I doubt there is such an MBA program. MBA programs accept students in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business background because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. I have taught MBA students with degrees in Music, Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Psychology, Political Science, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, and many other fields. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree., Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don't get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction.

Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. There is a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. The nice thing is that it allows you to find the program that best fits you. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status (look for AACSB accreditation or at least AACSB membership), tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, joint degrees such as MBA/JD, and much more. You can use it to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre-applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. Some of the other sites are less comprehensive, but all are useful.
