Looking For A Comic/graphic Novel From The 80

What is the difference between a comic book and a graphic novel?

In the strictest terms, the difference is in how the pages are bound in the printed versions. But story length is also a defining factor in how the two phrases are commonly used.A comic book is stapled ("saddle stitched" in printing terms). Most comic books are between 20-40 pages. The pages can go way higher than that (for example, the "giant" comics Marvel and DC used to publish), but they normally don't for financial reasons.Graphic novels are typically perfect bound (like paperback novels). A graphic novel tends to be a single complete work of 60 pages or more. Technically speaking, something that was previously published as single issues (Dog Man #5-9) would be called a trade paperback when the issues are collected and republished in a perfect bound book (Dog Man vol. 2).Watchmen, for example, was a 12 issue comic book series that was later collected into a trade paperback. People call it a graphic novel and for common purposes, sure, you can call it that. But traditionally a graphic novel is a longer work that was meant to be published only in its full form. Craig Thompson's Blankets, for example. Then there's something like Maus, which was serialized as chapters in a comics anthology and then collected into a graphic novel... or is it a trade paperback? I don't know! Haha. With digital comics becoming a bigger part of the end goal for creators, I think the definitions between comic books and graphic novels are becoming more difficult to apply. Truth be told, comic books and graphic novels both fall under the classification of "comics" regardless of everything else.Comics is the overarching medium, while comic books and graphic novels are just two formats of comics.

How much does it cost to print a graphic novel?

You can get an estimate at any printer (and no I'm not talking about Kinkos or Office Depot, I mean a PRINTER). Graphic novels need to have glue on the binding to make them into book format, this is not something Kinkos or Office Max or Office Depot generally do.

I did have a cartoon booklet printed up at Office Depot -- using a card stock cover, 10 pages folded in half, photocopied and then I did the folding and stapling. It made a 40 page booklet that I had 80 cartoons on, and the 200 copies I had printed came to $1.35 per booklet.

A printer would be charging by the number of pages they need to print for you. Anything over 500 pages total would get you cheaper prices. However the binding of them would cost you a certain amount, and the cover - if it's slick - would need to be discussed in advance. Figure color printing will be $1 per page. That's why most self published go with black and white. Tones is fine, that's still considered black and white and isn't going to cost extra if it's on your original.

Ask for a price quote. Ask where the breakdowns come in. If you only want 25 copies, you might be able to get away with $5 per copy, but again it would depend on what paper you go with, what cover paper you go with, and what the binding costs are. 200 pages would not be able to be saddle stapled, you're looking at glue and folding, which their machines can do.

How many pages should there be in a graphic novel?

With standard stock paper, 80+ story pages if you want it to stand up to shelf ware and be thick enough to put the title on the spine. 120+ pages if you want it to be thick enough to put title logos and graphic elements on the spine. ( This is also why so many limited comic series are 4–6 issue runs. 4–6 issues = 1 standard trade. )If you go past 250–280 pages in a single full color volume, you can easily price yourself out of the market.Black and white offers more latitude because the cost of each additional page is less. 320 pages and 480 pages are the upper limits for a lot of comic/ graphic novel printers. So if you’re going to go longer and don’t want to split it into volumes, you’ll need to shop around to find someone willing and able to print your book and you may need to order copies in larger runs. The logistics aside, it comes down to your audience and story.

Are there any chances for a graphic novel/comic to be popular worldwide if it's not from pop culture-influencing countries?

How about Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, about her personal experiences of the Iranian Revolution? This eventually became three best-selling books in several languages and an award-winning animated film.

How much would a autographed comic book worth?

So I bought two Iron Man comics book for about $2.50 and $3.99. How much would a Nov. issue #80 Invincible Iron Man: Mission into Madness and a direct edition Iron Man Legacy #1 be worth if I got Stan Lee to autograph both at the Las Vegas Amazing Comic Con this weekend? Does the author signing their comic books and graphic novels (and Stan Lee especially) up their value? I was gonna get Jim Lee to sign my copy of Batman: Hush and Greg Capullo to sign my copy of Batman: Court of Owls.

What are some of Batman's books that are not considered graphic novels?

Too many to list .A lot of great Batman storylines in the late 80’s /Early 90’s never made it into Graphic NovelsA lot of Detective Comics Issues between #590 -630 (approx before the Knightfall series began) or batman issues between 400–500 never made it into graphic novel form. The Many Deaths of BatmanA Lonely Place for Dying ( where Tim deduces Batmans identity)Legacy ( made itself into a graphic novel) but is now Out of Print. The missing issues in No Man’s Land, Knightfall (Justice League Task Force #4,#5 and #6), some great stories by Gred Rucka, Ed Brubaker, Marv Wolfman and more..

Are there any superhero books that aren't graphic/comics?

Many.My favorite is this paperback collection of short takes written by Doug Moench, who wrote Batman comics in the 80s.He actually studied forensic science manuals to write the tales as if they were Batman's field notes for future reference. There is a particular take where he describes how to check by touch the state of decomposition of a body. It's compared to ham. I never faced past-its-prime ham the same way after that. And there are action descriptions like these:It is probably out of print, but you can find it at used bookstores at a very reasonable price.

What's a good comic book to read?

Okay so you have been gone for a while which means the big events in Marvel( Siege) and the DC Universe (Blackest Night) are going to be diffcult to understand so I recommended picking up the four issues of Siege. DC has released Blackest Night in Graphic Novel form as well as all the tie-ins which is great for a newbie reader to catch up on. After doing that I recommend the follow in comics:
Marvel:
Secret Avengers-Basically superheroes turn super spy. The first four issues are out so its good to pick it up now before it gets to high in the numbers.
Steve Rogers Super Soilder-Mini series tha is not half bad.
Shadow land- I do not know the events leading up to the Mini Series but I was given a recommendation and found it quite enjoyable.
DC:
Green Lantern is a must especially with the Brightest Day Series out.
Green Lantern Corps: Same as above
Emerald Warriors-I have not personally read it because I find Guy Gardner to be an @$$ but its two issues out and who knows you could like it.
Brightest Day- 26 part series written by Spike TV award winner Geoff Johns. Personally its okay but its only eight issues in so it could get a heck of alot better.
Red Robin-Tim Drake's (Wayne's) new identity that Kicks major @$$.
JSA All-Stars- A sub group of JSA which I htink might be coming to end soon I am not sure.
JSA- Good stories and good heroes.
JLA- This is occanisly a hit or miss series. You get good issues and you get bad issues, it all depends on the week.
Dyanmite:
Kevin Smith's Green Hornet. It is an amazing series. My dad told me how he watch the show as a little kid so I picked up the comic and fell in love. The writing is Solid and swift an long with some amazing artwork. I recommend to you and anyone else reading this post to read this before the Green Hornet movie only because the movie is going to RUIN the name Green Hornet.
Hope I Helped.
P.S; Who on God's green earth chose Seth Rogen for the lead? Who?

What's the best way to get rid of my old comic books. They are around twenty years old.?

Sell them on ebay!
