Do girls like to receive handwritten letters?
I'm writing a girl with whom I haven't had contact because we vibed well together and I always had the impression there was more on the horizon for us. I really like her but I recently enlisted in the Army and will be shipping out soon. I wrote a letter politely asking if she would like to be my pen pal while I'm away and cryptically leaving the door open for more in case she'd like to hang out before I leave. I chose the letter because it seemed like a more thoughtful alternative to social media and because I love to write. I'm definitely interested in her romantically but I like her in a general sense and it would be fun to correspond with her through mail.

It depends on how long you have been corresponding. The first few letters, before you have truly established a relationship, let alone a friendship, go ahead and print them. Later, after some level of acquaintance… of friendship… has been created, then write the letters by hand: it shows a level of friendship (and respect for the friendship and the friend) of making a special effort to communicate. You are telling your pen pal, subtextually, “You are worth the extra effort for me to personalize my correspondence with you.” It is the polite way to do it. I'm just saying…

Call me old school, but I prefer the one with pen and paper. I have several pen pals and I enjoy writing and decorating the letters, filling the envelope with souvenirs (tea bags, bookmarks, cinema tickets, etc). I often send email to them but it's different, you know. Letter is very personal and you can find so many things from a letter (the unique handwriting for example).. and oh, not to mention the bliss of getting various, collectible stamps from around the world!
