Major In Econ And Minor In English Lit

Should I major in Spanish and minor in English, or double-major?

I'm mostly interested in and love Spanish. The only reason I was going to major in English is because I've always been good at the subject. But it's not really something I love to do. I get bored in the classes and with the subject material.

Eventually, I would love to become a translator or interpreter. Or even an ESL teacher. But working abroad would be my dream. I'm looking at my next few years in college and thinking the double-major will prevent me from doing a lot, i.e. studying abroad for a year. Why do it if I don't love it?

So my question is, would an English minor be useful? Will I be able to do something with it when i graduate if I major in Spanish? Or should I double-major anyway?

Can someone do a double major in Business and English Literature?

Agonizing over an English Major/Minor...?

Most of those "horror story" writers are unmotivated, untalented, and uncreative. Ignore them.

To answer your questions:

1) Is getting an English major as economically suicidal as everyone's saying? What jobs are there after I graduate?
ANSWER: It's tougher to find a higher-paying job as an English major than it is, say, if you have an MBA or some sort of degree in health care. But it's not economically suicidal. The secret is to have some plan, some strategy.

2) What (in your experience) is the best major/minor combination for English? In economic terms?
ANSWER: The best combination, in economic terms, is to combine the English major with some more focused degree that'll help you get into a niche area. Borrowing from my answer above, combine it with a business degree or a minor in some science. Then you'd be looking for a job that would require both of those skills...or a job that would value both.

3) In terms of jobs, are there any good English-technology combinations?
ANSWER: Most would be good. There's a big demand for communication professionals in health care. There's a big demand for online writers (web, blogs, etc.) who actually can write, especially if they know a particular subject or have some specialization. Or if they really understand search engine optimization. There are big developments in education--distance learning, blended learning, etc.--that require some technology skills and communication skills. Basically, again, look for a niche. Preferably a niche in a technology area that needs and values someone with an English degree.

Hope that helps.

What major or minor should I pair up with my French Major?

What do you want to do with a French degree? Lots of areas: international business, international affairs, journalism, literature or humanities, something that gives you a background in European Union operations, philosophy, etc.

Do you think that a major in comparative literature and a minor in economics is a good combination?

Hard to say. Largely depends on what career path you’d be interested in. Just off the top of my head, I think this academic background might demonstrate your well-rounded education to prospective employers (i.e. thinking outside of the box).Otherwise, you might be interested in literature that features society and its connection to economics. This is a really specific niche but it could work. You can examine these works through a new lens.If you’re thinking about becoming a novelist, your economics education can contribute to your creative writing. If you want to be an editor or publisher, economics help give you some insight about the book publishing market. You might be able to understand how to reduce expenses and increase efficiency (finance is also a good minor for this).Hope this helps!

History major/geology minor jobs?

Hmmm....You could become a Museum curator. Or on the staff of a highly prestigious museum.
You could become a historian...and work in a research center at a museum or organization.
A paid docent, or a museum owner. A whole lot actually. You could work at The White House. And you could write books on your study or even work with The History Channel or Travel channel. You should apply for a job there. ( :
Really, consider ALL of your options. What a fascinating major and minor. Best of luck to you!( :
