Why are Manchester United so bad since Sir Alex's retirement?
Sir Alex Ferguson is to many as the greatest coach to have graced not only football, but all of sport. He has won 48 honors in his entire career, 38 at Man Utd which includes 13 Premier League titles and 2 Champions Leagues. He overthrew Celtic, Rangers, and Liverpool to make his Aberdeen and Man Utd sides the dominant club of their respective countries and at times, in the world.However, United have struggled after his departure in 2013. There have been 4 managers in 4 years that followed including Moyes, Giggs, Van Gaal, and now Mourinho. The reasons they struggled go back into the Ferguson era and the flaws the club had that were delayed so long.Here are the reasonsThe Glazers did not fund the club properly. After their takeover in 2005, the Glazers have sucked billions of pounds out of the world’s wealthiest football club to comply with their debts. Although United saw a lot of success under their ownership, it is due to the genius of Sir Alex Ferguson and his footballers rather than the owners. They sucked up all the cash that was gained from the Cristiano Ronaldo deal back in 2009 and forced Ferguson to replace him with Michael Owen and Gabriel Obertan. It was not until 2014 when the Glazers finally coughed up the money, but it was too little too late and now we have spent the money so unwisely in the days of Louis van Gaal.The players were old and had no worthy replacements. Sir Alex Ferguson left a squad behind in talent and ridiculously old. The glorious backline that featured Ferdinand, Vidic, and Evra were in their 30s. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were on their last few paychecks and Wayne Rooney started his decline. Only David de Gea seemed at a decent age to keep going for 5 years. The others including Cleverly and Welbeck were no where near good enough to replace the legends of the side.David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were not good enough. It did not help that Ferguson was replaced by the chuckle brothers. Although Ferguson left, he left a very capable backroom staff to help guide him. Instead, I feel Moyes became arrogant as he replaced them all with his boys from Goodison. Add to that his lack of experience in the top level, he was miserable in all areas (bar Europe). Van Gaal did slightly better, but was there for much longer and had more money to back him up while his tactics were stuck in the 90s. With Mourinho in charge, things look very much more promising.
