Interesting question. When I started watching football back in the 60’s, the FA Cup was the most important trophy and the country would come to a standstill on the day of the final. I can still remember not only the goals, but some of the teams (that is, the names of all the players on the team) that played from that era. Since then it has declined in importance. Here are some reasons why. At that time the Cup Final was about the only game of the season that was broadcast live on TV and for many, their only opportunity to see anything other than very limited highlights. Even the highlights programmes such as Match of the Day (BBC) and the Big Match (ITV) would only feature two games and not even the goals from the others. As live broadcasts expanded, the Cup Final became less of an event. Unlimited replays were scrapped (I remember Liverpool v Arsenal taking 5 games to be settled), and penalty shootouts introduced. Cup winners Manchester United did not enter when they played in the World Club Cup. Wembley became used for the semi finals, making the experience less special. Cup ties were played mid week. Most important, the prize money for successful teams was dwarfed by the rewards of the Premier League, so clubs began to field weaker teams. Look at the attendances for cup ties, compared with league games and unless the home team is playing a team from a higher division, they are almost always lower. 50 years ago, cup ties were the most important games of the season and obtaining tickets could be very hard.I was lucky enough to attend the Manchester United v Crystal Palace final, and it was a great day out but nowhere near as prestigious as the finals were back in the day.

This issue terribly irritates me and my friends who follow football. It is probably because majority of people in our country are obsessed with cricket, so are sports channels but not all!Star Sports is a network of 8 sports channels (Star Sports 1, 2, 3, 4 and HD 1, 2, 3 , 4). A single live cricket match is telecast on multiple Start Sports channels! But, say if live 4 premier league matches kick off at the same time, then they will not use the network of 8 channels to telecast these live matches, instead some old random rhetoric cricket matches/ highlights/super bowling spells/super centuries etc. are shown on some channels and only selected matches are telecast. It is such a shame they prefer showing old cricket matches instead of some desired live football action! Sony Network has 4 dedicated sports channels (Sony Six + Sony Six HD and Sony ESPN + Sony ESPN HD). So, considering current situation IPL is being telecast on 6 channels (Sony Max + HD, Sony Six + HD, and Sony ESPN + HD). Now, come this weekend, we have FA Cup semi-finals (Saturday: Everton vs Manchester United, Sunday: Crystal Palace vs Watford) and it'll clash directly with IPL. Let's see if they keep their words and telecast it on Sony ESPN + Sony ESPN HD, as during the launch of Sony ESPN it was promised to be "Home for Football"!Ten Network has 5 dedicated sports channels and major football competitions they telecast are UEFA leagues (Champions League and Europa League). Ten Network airs all the live matches by using their network of 5 channels and do not repeatedly air rhetoric shows! (I personally respect Ten Network for that)So, solution for football not being preferred to cricket being telecast is to raise this up on twitter (These networks have their official twitter handles)... There have been instances in the past where channels have responded by airing preferred live action! This definitely works if you have a group of people doing it!!!
