Help with grade 8 math question?
A tennis court is 23.8m by 11m. A tennis club has 3 courts side by side in a fenced area. The courts have 3m between them and 3m around the outside. What are the dimensions of the fenced space? I don't just want an answer because how the heck am i going to learn from that? I missed a class so i'm having troubles now and my family is refusing to help me. Please give me a step to step guide. Thanks!

A rectangular picture frame measures 20cm by 30cm. a new frame is to be made by increasing each side length by the same amount. The resulting enclosed area is to be 1064cm. Find the dimensions of the new garden. Make an equation to solve the problem.

If you've done algebra, then this is the way I'd solve it and also show my work : Let X equal the number of small picture frames. Let Y equal the number of large picture frames. Step #1: Make equations for number of picture frames bought, and total price paid. 1) X+Y = 10 2) 3(X) + 5(Y) = 36 Step #2: Isolate for a variable (in this case, I will isolate for variable Y using the first equation since it is easier). 1) X + Y = 10 X - X + Y = 10 - X Y = 10 - X When isolating a variable, what you must do is get rid of the other variable on the left side. When you subtract variable X from the left side, you MUST also do subtract it from the right side, because as a rule, your equation must ALWAYS be balanced. Therefore, the equation X + Y = 10 is equal to y + 10 - X when you isolate for variable Y. Step #3: Solve the system of equations (I will do this by substituting the value for Y into the second equation which is 10 - X as we have determined from the first equation in Step #2) 2) 3(X) + 5(10 - X) = 36 Now, use the distribution properties; 2) 3X + 50 - 5X = 36 Now, reduce all like terms. 2) -2X + 50 = 36 Now, isolate the variable X. 2) -2X + 50 - 50 = 36 - 50 (remember that you are trying to eliminate the constant and to do that, you must make it equal to 0) 2) -2X = -14 Now, divide negative 2 by negative 14. Remember, that two negative integers make a positive. 2) X = -14 ------- -2 X = 7 Therefore, the number of small picture frames Serena bought is 7. Now, you must substitute the value of X (which is 7) into the first equation to find the value of Y. X + Y = 10 7 + Y = 10 Isolate for Y. 7- 7 + Y = 10 - 7 Y = 3 Therefore, the number of large picture frames Serena bought is 3. Check your answer by substituting the values for X (which is 7) and Y (which is 3) into the second equation, to see if it equals $36. 3(X) + 5(Y) = 36 3(7) + 5(3) = 36 21 + 15 = 36 36 = 36 Therefore, the values for X & Y are correct. Answer : Serena bought 3 large picture frames.

There are many correct answers here. I will just comment on the theory.First you should understand that (4-x^2)/(2-x) is undefined at 2, because when you substitute in 2, you get 0/0, which is undefined. Mathematicians, due to their quirky nature (and other reasons beyond the scope of this question) like to ask:"Well, I know that this is undefined, and could take on any possible value, but what *would* the value be if it *were* defined?"Or more practically, what would the value be for points "close to" 2.If x is a number close to 2, but it is not exactly 2, then "2 - x" is no longer 0. It is illegal to divide by zero in math, but dividing by something that is "close to zero" is perfectly fine. That also means that cancelling out (2-x)/(2-x) is also fine, because no matter how big (1/(2-x)) gets, (2-x) gets equally small and they cancel out.One other thing to mention. When a polynomial is 0 at a certain value p, then that means that it will have a factor of (x - p), so that means that you can always know to look for a factor of (x-p) in a situation like this. This is really pretty cool when you think about it.So, as other posters have mentioned, you cancel (x-2)/(x-2), which is equivalent to multiplying by 1 unless x is 2, and you are left with (x+2), which takes on a value of 4 at 2.The limit in the question is just mathematicians way of saying "Really, really close, like however close you think you got to 2, this limit is even closer than that."And who says mathematicians don't have a sense of humor.
