Melatonin 10mg Side Effects

What are the side effects of taking 30 mg melatonin?

The actually prescribed dose of melatonin is 2 mg but it rarely cause any side effect even in high dose (up to 60 mg)…It is found to induce sleep at 60 mg.#Traveller

How long do the side effects from melatonin last ?

There are no side effects to speak of. Melatonin is a natural substance that is in your body already so by taking it you are simply increasing the amount.

Melatonin only lasts 30 minutes in your blood stream, so you must be in bed and have dimmed or turned off the lights during that 30 minutes. Otherwise, its gone and has no effect. Melatonin increase simply tells your body to drop into a deeper sleep. If you are not in bed, or not even sitting down, with a change in darkness, they there is no effect.

I am going to assume, since you didn't tell us your age, that 3 mg is a very tiny amount. I take 10 mg minimum. Lab mice have been tested on large amounts, like 100 mg with no side effects. Most likely what you are experiencing are the side effects of catching up on your sleep. If you are exhausted or stressed and sleepless, then simply staying in bed 10 to 12 hours to catch up will cause similar symptoms. The problem is that you have probably been having heavy headedness and headaches all along from chronic lack of sleep, and your brain has learned to produce Endorphins to kill the pain/symptoms as its way of dealing with your lack of REM sleep. Just one night of REM sleep will lift the cloud of Endorphins from your brain so that you are back to the reality of what lack of sleep has been doing to your body. This "hangover" doesn't last more than three or so days so you just need to take aspirin and get over the hump. Call in sick if necessary or start your Melatonin on a weekend. Never start trying to catch up on sleep during the work week.

While it may be hard to do if you are stressed or emotionally troubled, here is the way to test this. Don't take the Melatonin, but compensate by forcing yourself to stay in bed 10 to 12 hours (on your weekend) and see if you have the same problem.

If your headaches last more than a week then something else is at play.

I suggest you speak to a Compounding Pharmacist who is familiar with these natural treatments. They can interview you and get all the details, whereas people like us aren't qualified to do that. Just google "compounding pharmacist" plus your city and state or call your personal pharmacist and ask them for a referral.

Melatonin 10mg Side Effects?

160mg is large a dose of melatonin. Most people max out at 3mg so you were well above in that sense. Melatonin is generally very safe, and has very little serious side effects. However, you have been taking it for a long time. The elevated melatonin blood levels caused by taking melatonin supplements generally lasts about ~12 hours. Melatonin can cause anxiety and even depression when taken in the long term. I had a friend who claimed he would have auditory hallucinations when taking melatonin so it can happen.

If you have to take 160mg of melatonin for two months then there is likely an underlying issue. Think about why you have trouble sleeping. Try to limit your caffeine intake during the day. Practice good sleep hygiene: http://www.sleepfoundation.org/article/a... Lastly, try switching from melatonin to something else. I have sleeping problems and take Ambien (prescription medication) but taking diphenhydramine or doxylamine (both found in versions of Unisom, an OTC sleeping med) can sometimes help. I've taken melatonin and it barely did anything. I had to take large doses to feel any effects and even then they were very minimal.

Remember, sleeping medications are a short-term solution, and should not be taken for longer than two months (some doctors even say one month should be the max). Again, try pinpointing the source of your sleeping problems, that might help you more in the long run.

Best of luck! If you have any more questions feel free to email me.

Are there any side effects on quality of sleep one uses Melatonin daily?

Melatonin “overdose” (just over the limit that is available for your body to use) range is 20–50 mg per day. Standard daily use is usually 3–5 mg per day. This would be the most effective amount for you to use. Going over this could have slightly more effect, but past the standard range would have limiting effects that increase with dosage (example: 100% available at 5 mg, 75% available at 6 mg, 40% available at 7 mg, etc). Uses are done above the 5 mg mark for certain conditions such as endometriosis calling for 10 mg and sleep disorders with sleep-wake cycle issues can use up to 12 mg.The length of use should usually not exceed 2 years. Problems such as depression, headaches and irritability can occur. But I don’t believe you will build a tolerance or have reduced effectiveness with use in the 3–5 mg range and probably higher. Just dose based on recommended amounts for the specific condition you want to alleviate. Check online medical sites and you can find them I’m sure.Hope this helps.

Are there any side effects in using melatonin to avoid jet lag?

1. No, there is no problem with it. It will help you to fall asleep 1/2 after you take it. As melatonin is the body's own sleep inducing hormone from the pineal gland, it is quite safe and doses range from 1 mg to 5 mg depending on sensitivity. When you awaken in the middle of the night it is safe to take another 1 to 3 mg of melatonin to help you fall asleep again. 2. When I fly to Germany eastbound, which from the west coast in North America has a time switch of 9 hours, I find that sleeping for 1 hour in the afternoon of your arrival in Germany will do a lot of good in terms of getting over jet lag. Also, the more sleep you can catch on the plane, the easier it is to get over it. In the evening I take melatonin (in my case 3 mg) at the new bedtime (around 10 PM Germany time). I use my alarm clock to get up at 7 AM as I want to do sightseeing. It will usually take me only 3 to 4 days, sometimes up to 1 week to get over the jet lag going eastbound. I don't seem to need naps during the day (quite opposite to going westbound, see below).3. On a westbound flight I find it often takes me longer to get over jet lag. But the principal is the same. Usually flights are such that coming from Germany I arrive in the evening on the west coast of Canada. I usually did not catch much sleep at all going westbound, so it feels like an overlong party and I am ready to go to sleep. I try again to go to bed at 10 PM to get my local sleep rhythm established early. I take melatonin 3 mg and may add two capsules of valerian, if I am too wound up from the flight. However, going westbound it takes me often 1 1/2 to 2 weeks to feel normal with regard to the jet lag. In the first two or three days I often feel a real exhaustion in the mid afternoon and I take a nap for 1 hour (alarm clock to wake me up). This seems to be the best in terms of re-energizing me.

Can a 14 year old take 10 mg melatonin?

Can I take Prozac and Melatonin?

Well, basically it shows that melatonin reduces the effectiveness of your medication. I did a little research, and from what I understand those studies were done on animals, and human studies are on going or as of yet inconclusive. I looked to find these dangers, and I couldn't. However, if the source is legit I would refrain from using the melatonin.

Your body already creates melatonin on its own anyways. It is likely that something is lowering the levels of melatonin in your body, which coincidentally enough, seems to be a side effect of Prozac (fluoxetine).

I would ask the prescribing doctor about this, as they could perhaps put you on a different medication if that ends up being the cause. The problem with taking melatonin supplements is that your body will make less of it and you may become dependent on it.
