Messaging People On Linkedin

Is messaging people on LinkedIn effective for getting a job?

LinkedIn messaging landed me a job offer. This is how it went down.I was scrolling through job matches. Suddenly one caught my eye. The job description sounded awesome. I would get to help make the company a cool place to work…one of my favorite things to do. It was also my chance to get back into aviation, one of my favorite industries. There was only one problem…I was too late. The job had closed.Well that sucks.I kept scrolling. A nagging voice in my head begged me to reconsider.Ah, what the hell. I’ll give it a shot. What do I have to lose?I logged into LinkedIn. There was a trial offer for a 1-month LinkedIn Premium upgrade. I signed up. Now I could direct message almost anyone. It didn’t take long to find the company recruiter. So I wrote him:Hi Jake,Is there a way to apply for a closed position? The job is a Consultant role with your Organizational Development team. I have aviation experience and my skills match the job description. I know interviews are probably going on at the moment and was hoping there would be a way for me to apply last minute. Thanks for being available on LinkedIn for me to contact you. I don’t want to miss this opportunity which is why I'm reaching out directly.Sincerely,MattWhat happened next was pretty cool.Jake wrote me back. He reopened the job for fifteen minutes so I could apply online. Five interviews later, I was sent an offer.Although I didn’t end up taking the job, it was mine if I wanted it.Here’s the thing:Hiring is a pain.I haven’t met a hiring manager yet who enjoys hunting for new employees. Managers have stuff to do. Weeding through stacks of resumes and talking to a bunch of nervous strangers is as much fun as a vegetarian barbecue. As you can imagine, finding someone who qualifies, who’s polite and is excited enough to write a personal message is a recruiters dream. Why? Because you’ve done all the work for them. Here’s how a direct message can work for you, too.Make sure your profile is up to dateAsk for what you want up frontYour skillset should match the jobGive a brief description of your qualificationsShow appreciation in advanceBe excited about the jobDirect messaging on LinkedIn is one of those job search unicorns that only has an upside. Take advantage of it.What do you have to lose?Nothing, that’s what.I’d say go for it.

Why don’t people reply on LinkedIn messaging? I try contacting so many people, but 90% of people don't even respond. Such people should be deleted.

A lot will depend on the content of your messages and why you are reaching out to these people. If they do not know and have no context then this may be the reason for such a low response rate. You should also know that less than 25% of profiles are actually active and of that the average LinkedIn user is only on the platform for 17 minutes a month. Before sending messages check the person’s profile for their recent activity. If there is nothing then expect that they may not be an active user or only there rarely and you might have to find another way to reach them faster.

How do I write a message on LinkedIn looking for a job opportunity?

I know messaging people about job opportunities works, because I’ve used this exact same method to land a job on LinkedIn.But before you can even think about reaching out to someone on LinkedIn about a job opportunity you’re interested in, you need to make sure your profile is set up to sell you as the BEST candidate for the job.How do you that?Create a Compelling Profile Summary:So many people overlook this step when setting up their LinkedIn profiles. They either leave their Profile Summary blank, or the write a short blurb that does absolutely NOTHING to separate them from the competition. You’re profile summary should captivate the recruiter, get them excited about talking with you about the job opportunity. Here’s a random LinkedIn summary I found from someone who’s in the same industry as me:Here’s the profile summary that landed me last position:See the difference?Use Language that CaptivatesWhen recruiters read through your profile, you want them to be excited about what they’re reading. You want them shaking their head in agreement with every sentence. You want THEM to feel lucky to have found you, because you have pretty much all the skills they’ve been looking for in a candidate. How do you make that happen?Use the same language that you see in the type of jobs you’re applying for.Every industry has it’s own lingo. And every position has certain skills that are required.Make sure you’re profile is filled with engaging stories that display those skills. The better your profile can match what the recruiter is looking for, the more likely you’ll get the interview (and eventually the job).Once your profile is ready to go, the next step is to…Reach Out to the Job PosterKeep this message brief. But let the recruiter know that you’re very interested in working for the company. If there’s an open position that you’re interested in, be sure to reference it.Also make sure you’re showcasing how you can bring value to the company.Follow UpRecruiters on LinkedIn are being CONSTANTLY bombarded by candidates. There’s a good chance they won’t see every message that comes their way.So don’t be afraid to follow up multiple times.Persistence pays.Hope this helps!P.S.Want to Discover 4 LinkedIn Mistakes that are Killing Your Chances of Landing an Interview?: Get my exclusive LinkedIn “Cheat Sheet” here

How do I cold message someone on LinkedIn with whom I have no connection?

There are two main options:Ask to get connected first, and once accepted - send a message (free)Use Premium LinikedIn account to send InMail (from $59.99/month)And one workaround:Be a member of the same LinkedIn group of which the person / people you wish to target are also members. This way you can send unrestricted message. (free)If you choose to send a connection request first, the best it to personalise it. Bear in mind, you will only have 300 characters for that message. Once connected (if they accept your request), you will have no limit. When personalising, try to explain the reasons for asking to connect, and always visit their profile first! A personalised connection request:—————————Hi {first name},As a fellow business leader I imagine you are also looking for ways to grow your business. I see that we share a number of common interests and connections. Would you be interested in connecting with a view to exploring future business opportunities?Best regards, {your name}—————————Once connected, make sure you build rapport before jumping into a “sales mode”. There is nothing more off-putting than asking for a connection and then send a “sales pitch” straight after!

Is it ok to send a LinkedIn message to a prospective employer when looking for a job?

This is how I got my current job.I messaged one of the founders of the agency (it’s small enough to do that). He put me in touch with the Head of Client Services, and after a couple of interviews I got hired. The trick is writing the inmail well. Personalize, be friendly and polite. Don’t be salesy. And make sure your LI profile is as good as it can be.
