Microsoft Essentials How To Turn On Virus Protection

Why I can't turn "on" my virus protection in the Windows Security Center?

Disable the Microsoft Security Essentials and then try to start the Security Center. Now check to see if you can start the Security Center. Enable the Microsoft Security Essentials back once everything is done.

See if it resolves the issue. If not,

Windows Security Center uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to acquire information about the installed Anti-virus and Firewall applications, and their current status.

Scan and repair the WMI Repository Database on the computer. To do this, follow these steps:

- Click Start, Click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

- At the command prompt, type the following commands. Pressing ENTER after each command line:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

winmgmt /salvagerepository

- Restart the computer.

Hope This Will Resolves The Issue.

Is microsoft security essentials good ?

I'm going to disagree with all your other answers. 8 months ago they would have been right. But in the last 6 months tests at independent labs that test anti-virus software Microsoft security essentials has been doing a poor job of detecting threats and stopping them. Not just at one lab but at several labs. So at this time you are better off using Avast or AVG. Both have much higher levels of protection and are free.

Why doesn't Microsoft Security Essentials start on boot up?

Don't use msconfig to change anything regarding MSSE. Go to administrative tools> services and find the Microsoft AntiMalware service. This is the service for MSSE. Double click on it to view it's properties. It's start type should be "automatic". If it's not, change it.

What you are seeing in the task bar is just the gui for MSSE, the program itself is not actually started.

Msconfig does not recognize the different start types for services so it should not be used to enable or disable services. It views manual start, automatic start, and automatic (delayed start) as the same thing...enabled.

What is the best virus-protection program I can get on my computer? Which program offers the most for the least amount of money?

When you haven't installed antivirus protection in Windows 8.x,  Microsoft Windows Defender gamely steps up and tries to defend your  system against malware attacks. Sadly, testing proves that no matter  what your friend who has a lot of opinions about computers tell you,  this built-in antivirus just doesn't measure up to what you can get from companies that specialize in security. Even  better, while you certainly get your money's worth from the premium antivirus software,  there are also some very good third-party antivirus tools that don't  cost a thing. We've rounded up a collection of totally free antivirus  products that should serve you well.Your antivirus should definitely have the ability to root out  existing malware, but its ongoing task is to prevent any nasty programs  from getting a foothold. All of the antivirus programs in this  collection offer real-time protection against malware attack. Some take  the fight upstream, working hard to ensure you never even browse to a  malware-hosting site.I suggest Microsoft Security Essesntials

How secure is FortiClient as an anti-virus and a firewall?

I can't really answer this as I haven't studied the product carefully, but thank you for the A2A. But I will offer some general advice on anti-virus and firewalls. From what I see, FortiClient offers a number of different features, well beyond AV and local firewall, but as you asked specifically about those, I will comment on those. The anti-virus systems that come built-in with OS X (XProtect) and Windows (Windows Defender) should really be the only AV you need. These are already set up and running automatically (for Windows 7, you need to install Microsoft Security Essentials). Also for localhost in-bound firewalls, what comes with your OS is also sufficient. I don't know the details on Windows, but in OS X, it's all there in System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Just turn it on and leave the defaults unless you know what you are doing. (If you want superfine control of the OS X firewall, it is actually the BSD packet filter (pf) system.)There may be other things that FortiClient offers that are of value to you, but localhost inbound firewall and AV are not things that you need to install on most machines. As for the security of them (your real question), I have no idea. I was not familiar with the product until I saw your question. So I'm sorry that I haven't been able to answer your question.

Did SUPERAntiSpyware turned off my antivirus program?

I’m using Microsoft Security Essentials as my antivirus program and looks like it got turned off after I used SUPERAntiSpyware to scan. I’m not sure if they are related or not though. Why did it turn off suddenly? I think this is the first time it happened and it didn’t happen last time even though I used SUPERAntiSpyware so maybe not related. Do you think SUPERAntiSpyware caused my antivirus program to turn off protection?
