How were you exempt from military service in Israel?
I wasn’t. Did the full two years. It was great. I worked in my profession, managed to save the army lots of money, and got to know all levels of the population.
Do I have to serve in the Greek military?
"As of 2008, Greece has mandatory military service of 12 months for male citizens between the ages of 18 and 45. Greek military law allows Permanent Residents Abroad to defer military service till repatriation to Greece. Until 2005, Permanent Residents Abroad status (for draft purposes) was only granted to persons who had been born abroad or who had moved abroad before the age of eleven and to those who had immigrated to a specific set of countries before 1997. This definition excluded many thousands of citizens who were living abroad and who were regarded as 'draft evaders' by the authorities. The law was amended at the end of 2005 to grant Permanent Resident Abroad status to persons who have lived abroad for at least eleven years, or have worked abroad for at least seven years." All people born outside of Greece who have Greek ancestry/background up to 3rd generation are Greek nationals but you have to have proof that you have Greek ancestry. I would advice you to have with you at all times your "PERMANENT RESIDENT ABROAD", this paper is extremely important, in Greek its called "Monimos Katikos Eksoterikou". It is issued by your nearest Greek embassy or consulate in your home country that states you and your parents reside, pay taxes or have been born abroad and stayed at least 11 years. As one guy once told me "This paper is to a Greek national abroad as spinich is to Popeye. Don’t leave home without it." So in essence you can get military service deferment as long as you live abroad that will make you eligible to travel in Greece whenever/wherever you want to.
Should the U.S. have a year of compulsory military service?
Economically and logistically — NO. The US doesn’t need that many military members. If every 18 year old US citizen was required to go in to military service for a year, that would be ~ 4 million people every year. The government would then have come up with an insane amount of money to transport, induct, clothe, house, feed, provide health care, and pay. With only one year obligation, they wouldn’t have enough time to be properly trained to do anything significant other than basic infantry tactics and drill. One year isn’t long enough to make it worth spending 6 - 8 months training someone to do complex military specialties. I suspect they wouldn’t have the motivation to learn it properly, either. Most jobs in the military take months of initial training followed by years of on-the-job apprentice training to master. Also, existing bases do not have the infrastructure or buildings to house them all. That doesn’t even consider the potential cost of veterans benefits. In my opinion conscripts would just get in the way of military operations and be a burden. Someone is forced to serve will not have the same motivation as someone who volunteered to serve and bad attitudes are contagious in the ranks. Even during past military drafts, not everyone was called up - only a limited portion of the eligible pool. The all volunteer force is significantly more professional and motivated than a conscripted force. In my opinion, a military draft is only appropriate in a time of national emergency when there are not enough volunteers to fill the ranks. On a side note. If everyone had to serve, that would undoubtedly include some criminally inclined people. You have to face the facts, not everyone is law abiding. I’d like to think that is a really small percentage. Lets say, 1% - that is potentially 40,000 people per year. Maybe some military discipline will change their ways. Alternatively, it may also leave them feeling angry and looking for a fight when they finish their year of compulsory service. Considering they’re probably going to be in excellent physical shape after doing PT for a year and will have training in the use of automatic weapons, explosives, and team tactics, it might not be a good thing.

Why is military service mandatory in South Korea?
South Korea has to always be ready as the reality is North and South Korea are only at a truce from their war of the early 1950s. North Korea is always flexing its military muscle and making worrying threats against South Korea. So South Korea can only try and be ready for any military aggression and if seen as having a weak military the possibility of North Korea attacking increases. Many believe North Korea would not be so stupid but the reality is if South Korea is not ready to fend off an attack and North Korea managed to rush into South Korea and get control before other countries could step in and help push the North Koreans back over the demilitarised zone into North Korea. They have to have mandatory military training to keep a good reserve of people who can at a moments notice be called upon and armed and put on the front line should the need arise. North Korea is developing intercontinental nuclear weapons so you could image what will happen if they invade South Korea while threatening the US and other countries with nuclear strikes if they try and get involved and help South Korea. It's unfortunate but South Korea must always appear to be ready for war so North Korea will be less likely to try and see if they could over run their democratic and successful free southern counterparts. South Korea is a modern successful country that has a lot to lose if North Korea saw them as a weak and easy target.
