I’ve been a part of many, many deaths from chronic disease, and I have never witnessed a burst of energy. The closest I can come to such a description is I saw two people open their eyes and look around the room a bit within an hour or so of their actual death. So, never ask why until you’ve asked if.Generally, what I witnessed during 20+ years in health care, mostly in skilled nursing facilities, is the person “sleeps” more and more and more, awakening only to high stimulation, usually physical stimulation. Caloric intake drops to nearly nil, H2O intake no more than a half cup of liquid in 24 hours. Urine output drops, and urine darkens, there is little bowel movement or fecal content, breathing begins to hasten, usually. Eyes sink into the sockets, brows and mouth draw downward, the head usually stretches back into a near-hyper-extension. Arms may cross up over chest, with hands curving inward, feet may draw up with bent knees.There is no appreciable notice of environment, and respirations continue to fall, with the classic Cheyne–Stokes pattern of gasping at the start of each inhalation. Eventually, respirations falter, slowing, and stop.Death.I am not saying no dying person has ever had or would have a burst of energy within a day or less of death, but I believe that to be more urban myth than reality.
