Monologue For Theater

What are good monologues to use when trying out for a theater production?

Of course, your choice depends on your age, type, and what you are auditioning for. It’s generally recommended to have several monologues on hand to pull out as needed - a classical , a contemporary, and a comedy. When I audition actors, I prefer to see something that shows their range, their emotional depth, but also their humor, even if I’m not seeing them for a comedy. It is less important to me than the character in the source material match their age and type. But if it’s way off (a twenty year old reading Lear) it won’t feel authentic.

Great Theater monologue

Hey Jake: Here's a monologue to try. It's from a play called OHIO, by Nick Zagone. Take your time with it and take a few pauses. Imagine that you are talking to a woman named Catherine, whose nickname is Cat.
They are together in bed in the play, but you can perform it as though you are sitting at the breakfast table or in the living room of Zach's apartment. This may take you about 20 seconds to just say it, but if you really visualize it, you should be able to make it go even up to 5 minutes. Just pace yourself and breathe, you'll do fine. Best of luck in your audition! Break a Leg!!!

ZACH: I knew this professor in college, a physicist and he said there are these things called “wormholes in time.” Holes that can theoretically transport people to their other realities. Ya see, somewhere in another reality we have made the other decisions… the choices we didn’t make! In another reality this man is a billionaire… you are not married to your husband… and I’m living in Ohio! The other possibility lives on with every decision we make. In other realities we are on those paths not taken in our lives. When you think about what you could be doing, you are doing it! Right now! Right now, we can continue in this reality or start a new one based on this decision! And if we start a new reality, don’t feel bad because you will always be married to your husband in another one. It’s so easy to change-- just change your mind. Somewhere I’m a bum and this man is giving me a quarter. Somewhere right now you are at home in bed with your husband and I’m drinking myself to sleep in front of the TV. We have created a whole new reality here Cat! We decided… just to talk to each other, but in the process we have created for ourselves a whole new life-- possibly. [Holds up KENO ticket.] We’re at a wormhole Catherine. Would you like to jump in with me?

Dramatic monologue for theater audition?

I typed up the translated version (adding more or less) of Su-Mi's monologue from the Korean horror/drama film, A Tale of Two Sisters. It is not, by any means, supposed to sound overly dramatic but the tone of her voice is very melancholy. Try to sound as a real person would if they had tragically lost their sister to death - not cartoon-y or overly dramatic (ex. crying and screaming out the lines at the top of your lungs) but sad and melancholy to a normal extent. You may not get it if you haven't watched the film but it's still a very sad and lovely monologue that's pretty easy to understand (a girl loses her sister and feels guilty she wasn't there to stop her tragic fate):

I usually don't get very sentimental in Autumn, but it's different this year. I gaze up at the Northern sky, the bluest of skies, and it brings back the memory. It happened exactly one year ago with my feet in the water and the sky I once gazed upon resembled the sky I'm gazing upon now. I'm fond of the color blue much like the water at the wharf near home, much like the blue sky, much like the
quilt and pillow in my room, and of course, my blue dress. I loved my house especially- I always felt as if I've lived there in a previous life of mine. It never felt unfamiliar even when I first stepped foot in it. That familiar feeling, I still remember it. But now, whenever I'm in the house, I always feel alone. There was one person I missed more than anything else in the world - the little girl who never hated her sister. Even when angry, her sweet doe eyes looked at me without a word- my dearest little sister, Su-Yeon. I never knew I could miss one person for the longest time. I grew to be very ill without her. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, I couldn't speak, and I wept more than usual. It was truly what it meant to be lonely. I'm sorry I could not be there to save you. Do not forgive me your sister but do not forget her either. Your spirit constantly haunted me but that only made my illness worse. There is a saying here that you bury the one you love deeply in your heart which means you do not forget them until the very day you die. I had buried Su-Yeon deeply in my heart and she will always be there even after death. A year had passed by each time I look at that familiar blue sky, I think of her and long for her. On every windy autumn day, the sadness takes over me but still, I quite like this longing.

Which Shakespeare monologue is the best for a theater school audition?

That is a good question but it is not one that can be answered by anyone who doesn’t know you. We could list our favourite soliloquies or speeches (monologue isn’t really a word you use with respect to a Shakespeare play) and make all sorts of strategic suggestions but the best fit is the correct answer. And we don’t know you. Maybe one of the things they’ll be looking for is whether you know yourself.some questions the audition panel will want answers to:does this person have potential? Can we see nascent acting ability and are they personally interesting?are they open to direction and change (and therefore will they learn)?do they have significant impediments to learning or a future career?will they work as part of a team or do they think they are a star and could not care less about the ensemble ethos of theatre?is there something refreshing and memorable about the way they perform?what current level of skill is apparent? Too much may be as inappropriate as too little - who wants to sign someone up who will almost certainly get bored and go off to find work before long?In any audition (not just an entry to theatre school one) they are primarily looking for an insight into who you are. They want to know what makes you unique and memorable. So, what to choose? It is not just a question of which pieces are the most interesting or the most common - it is about what suits you. I don’t mean are you 70 years old (Lear) or Jewish (Shylock) or North African (Othello). I mean what are your essential personal qualities. Are you impetuous, deadpan, sincere, brave, light and funny, strong, authoritative, slow-rhythmed, quixotic and fast-rhythmed, etc? When I was at drama school, as a young man, I was constantly being cast in exercises as Lear or Claudius - that is what they saw in my essential qualities. I hadn’t seen that in myself.

I need some monologues for theater school auditions. i need 1 comical, 1 serious/dramatic, and one classical.?

I have a pretty good comical one... i rewrote the cuss words, but if you want them just go to:: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/54650/the_oneminute_monologue_for_actors.html?cat=33

The title is:: A Different Kind of Monologue the Director Hasn't Heard a Million Times

Alright, this is my monologue. The script actually says these words I'm saying right now. And I'm not making this up. One minute monologue. Do directors actually know how hard it is to find a one minute monologue? I swear, I'm not making this up as I go along. I found it on the internet.
I can even tell you where. You've just got to believe me! {suddenly downcast} You don't believe me. You think I'm not prepared and that I'm just saying whatever comes to mind. Now I'm really not going to get this part. I knew I should've done "The Actor's Nightmare." At least you'd know it was a real monologue. {Pace the floor.} Umm, what can I do? What can I do? I really want this part... {Start singing a la Michigan J Frog of Looney Toons fame} "Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal..." (can look it up on youtube if needed){slump down} I knew that was a stupid idea! This isn't even a musical! {break away} You see, that's where this monologue goes wrong. So what if this *was* a musical I'm auditioning for? That line wouldn't work! I'd be standing here, looking stupid... {self-consciously} like... I... am... now... {yelling} What do you want from me?! {calmly} There, that feels better. But still, I knew I should've picked a different monologue. I mean, seriously... What kind of person writes this stuff, anyway? And then actually puts it out there for other people to use? At really important auditions! God, I really need caffeine. Not that I'm an caffeineoholic or anything, 'cause I'm not! Oh, this just isn't going right at all. I should just leave and accept the inevitable. I know my way out. It's "Don't call us, we'll call you," right? And just like that, you'll cast someone who did a better monologue than this. Dang it! Well, thank you for your time, Mr. Director, sir [or Ms Director, ma'am] ... I guess I'll be going now. Bye.
