Morally Speaking Whats Wrong With A Fetus-conditioning System Like In Brave New World

What do you find prejudice about the novel Brave New World?

have you read the book?

Brave New World VS 1984?

Two great books and this aspect of comparing them isn't one I would have thought of before...bravo!

For BNW remember that they condition the babies for their specific roles. If I recall in the text the baby has choice between a tool and a flower. If the child chooses the flower they get shocked (rejection of nature). Also the baby has a choice between a toy and a book if they chooce the book they are shocked (rejection of literature )

Language is limited also by the culture in BNW the different classes aren't meant to mix. Alphas aren't supposed to talk to Betas, the Gammas have to speak with respect "sir" again and again. The Deltas have very low intelect and preform menial tasks. The Epsilons are basically mentally retarded and cannot speak at all.

Also soma as the popular drug of the novel limits how you act, affecting how you think, and eventually how you speak. The drug is meant to make everyone blissfully ignorant of the caste system and "happy." In this state no one will ever "speak out" against the society.

Alot of terminolgy is used in the book as well. Especially in reference to the character of "John the Savage" remember when his mother (Linda) is dying he demands that she speak to him and under soma she is unable to speak. This terminoly, language, and events are meant to enforce the seperation between the Savage Land and the World State

The character of Helmholtz Watson is representative of literature he is good at heart and discusses Shakespeare with John but knows little still for his befriendment of John he is cast out by Mustafa Mond to Iceland (a rejection again of literature)

to add a bit more here a good anyalis of the book on wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_New_W...

talks alot about the language of industry that Huxley based the book on because of the industrialzation and manufactering principles brought about by Henry Ford
