More About Going To Ucsd

I am going to UCSD. . .and I am going to live in a dorm.?

I heard there are ghosts at UCSD. Bring your holy water.

Question about going to ucsd and partying at sdsu?

Don't listen to people who put you down for wanting a social life; your college years are supposedly the best years of your life, so you don't want to spend the entirety sitting alone in your dorm with a textbook.

I don't go to San Diego, but I do have friends who do. SDSU is just 15 miles away, and I've heard that heading over there is very common.

Good luck!

EDIT:
I'm instant messaging a UCSD kid right now. Apparently, if you join the sd board club or the surf club, you'll be invited to good parties at UCSD. It's definitely possible to go to SDSU parties, but they have strict doormen because all the SDSU kids want to party, so they are harder to get into and you need to have friends who go there or go to a smaller frat party. Apparently the smaller frat parties have a lot more guys than girls. Most UCSD parties do not have doormen.

How do you like going to UCSD?

Overall, UCSD is a really great school. Currently I am undeclared (another sad boy who didn’t get into Computer Science) so life here is very challenging. The classes are pretty competitive (especially the Computer Science classes) and the students here are very focused on academics. However, academics don’t rule this entire university. There are plenty of people here who are able to balance a nice life of good grades and a social life, but there are also a lot of people who can’t.UCSD has hundreds of clubs and recreational classes to take, access to multiple gyms, great weather, wonderful people, beaches and so much more. This is an amazing place to be an I’m glad that I am in San Diego. EXCEPT FOR THE TOXIC COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT.Hope this helps.

Why did you go to UCSD?

I skipped my senior year of high school by going to summer school and went straight to UCSD after turning 17, primarily to live at the beach and surf courtesy of the knowledge that my parents would pay anything to get rid of me. In 1978 it wasn’t that hard to get in even with my mediocre grades. It was heaven - the drugs and the booze were a lot of fun coupled with my new-found freedom from parental control. The women (girls) were not quite as fun though unfortunately. I soon realized that taking Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics my first semester with my non-existent study skills, which I partly blame on my lame high school, was making it hard to focus on my main priority which was learning how to surf and lose my virginity. After 2 years of screwing around they politely asked me to leave so I returned home and took some junior college classes, which felt like a continuation of high school. I soon concluded I needed to return to UCSD and face the challenge of graduating from a well-regarded academic institution. It was tough but I graduated eventually and still surfed occasionally. The reputation of my degree in computer science from UCSD has continued to pay dividends so it was well worth it, although I miss the better social life that most other colleges provide - like many of my friends I graduated a virgin (embarrassing!).

Which school should I go to: UCSC or UCSD?

I already submitted by SIR to UCSC, but just today, I received an e-mail from UCSD with a notification that my wait list status has been changed to accepted. I applied to the chemistry major for Santa Cruz, and pharmacological chemistry for San Diego. Currently, I intend to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry.

If I go to Santa Cruz, I will be able to come home quite frequently, but if I go to San Diego, I'll only be able to come home during the major vacations. Santa Cruz is a smaller school, and San Diego is a really large school.

Please help me decide. I have only 3 days to respond to San Diego.

I am major in ME, should I go to UCSD or UC Davis?

I got accepted by UCSD and UC Davis for undergrad. I know both schools are well ranked in science field. My major is in mechanical engineering and I plan to take master degree in Berkeley. Should I go to UCSD or UC Davis?

CSULB, UCI, or UCSD?

GO TO UCSD
sometimes it isn't about the prestige
UCSD is a really good school you are going to get a really good education and more opportunities than if you were to go CSULB. I mean its not a bad school just UCSD and UCI have more opportunities, and I'm going to say it--- harder classes.

You'll need to study your butt off (just like you did in high school + plus more) to get really good grades in college (where ever you go)

Bottom Line: To choose between schools look at your program / desired major and look at the requirements, research labs, places to work after you graduate, faculty you might want to do research under, cost.

Good luck!

I am undecided. Should I go to UCD or UCSD?

A2A. Unless UCSD cost of attendance is less than UCD, you should go to UCD.Economics is a way of making decisions where the benefits outweighs the costs. Ranking are based on surveys, and according to the "Philosophical Gourmet Report", UCD and UCSD are tied. They are 20th out of 42 US universities. See Philosophy Moves Up In National Ranking. In other words, they have the same benefit.Assuming zero financial aid,  cost of attendance is In-state $34,323 Out-of_state $59,031 and UCSD is In-state: $31,365 Out-of-state: $56,073. UCD is roughly $10,000 more in cost. Based on cost, UCSD is the better economic choice. (You would need to put your actual cost of attendance to make an accurate cost of attendance.)Bottom line: Assuming zero financial aid, UCSD.

Which is better, UCSB or UCSD?

I think the question is about where you would feel most comfortable. Both schools are excellent in terms of academics. According to the Times Higher Education rankings, UCSD is #31 in the world and UCSB is #53. Honestly, there are few employers that would hire you simply because you went to one and not the other, especially once you’ve got a few years of work experience under your belt. I think that for the most part, unless you go to an elite school like Cal Tech, MIT, Ivy League, Oxford, Cambridge or a few others, it really doesn’t make a whole lot of difference if you go to a top-tier school like one of the UCs or a mediocre school. Therefore, the main difference is in the fit for the student. My info. is dated by now, but I think that the lifestyle is better at UCSB, where I went as an undergrad. The dorms on campus are close to the beach, and after the dorms most students live in Isla Vista, which has a unique charm as a student ghetto. There’s a great beach/hippy atmosphere, and there’s a lot of beautiful people around. The social life is good, and it’s a good place to live in your early 20’s. People generally study hard, and have a good time, too. I was able to surf, scuba dive, hike, play intramural sports, and work at a decent part-time job to help pay tuition. I had a great experience, and thoroughly enjoyed my time at UCSB.UCSD is nice too, but it’s got a different vibe. It was definitely less relaxed when I used to visit friends there, and it wasn’t as easy to meet other students. The UCSD community was a lot more spread out amongst the general vicinity of La Jolla (if you’re rich) and S.D. in general. The party scene at UCSD was tame compared to UCSB, back in my day, but I always found a party when I visited. Both places have a high cost of living, but it’s easier to live cheaply in SD. The surf is more consistent in S.D. The weather in San Diego is probably nearly the best in the world with consistent sun and mild temperatures with little precipitation, but Santa Barbara isn’t far behind. San Diego is a much bigger, more dynamic city, but Santa Barbara is, in my opinion, more cultural. You can get great food in both places, but SD has more options as a bigger city. Both would be a good choice, but one might be better for you, depending on your preferences.

I was accepted at both San Diego state and UCSD, where should I go?

Depends on what you are looking for in college. As a UCSD student, I can say that the workload here is definitely greater than that of SDSU. I’ve got a friend at SDSU who is also in the Computer Science major, and does about 20 min of programming a week for his CS courses. They increase in difficulty, but compared to the assignment here at UCSD the workload doesn’t seem that bad. Even in my class (lower division) we are getting assignments that take ~12 hours to complete over a period of a week and require lots of concentration and application skills. In terms of sociability, SDSU is the hotspot for socializing. However, that doesn’t mean that UCSD is not home for socializing either. If you just go outside it’s not that hard to find stuff that is going on. If you are looking for parties though, def go to SDSU for that.Just a quick PSA: If you were admitted as undeclared to UCSD then think hard about this. The amount of undeclared people at this school (like me) is too damn high and it’s causing serious problems. Math is now impacted, and people are resorting to “second-string” majors like Math-Computer Science which isn't fair for the people who actually want to do Math-CS. Competition is really serious here. I mean like within hours of getting an assignment, people are all over Piazza (an online discussion website for our classes) asking about when the assignment turn in can be posted. It’s annoying. Many students will go 8 week in a class, and then fucking drop the course because they have a 90% which is too close to a B. Students are just fishing for A’s (mostly just in the CS department) because it’s incredibly difficult to get accepted as an undeclared major. So, if you have a good major then I would say go to UCSD. Otherwise, think about whether you want to be undeclared and stressed about dying without a major.
