Motorbikes And Spare Time

How can I find a free junk motorcycle to fix-up on my spare time as a hobby?

What Mike said and I'll throw in that a free bike, no matter how derelict, is hard to come by. Reason being that there are always some good bits that are worth selling to someone who needs 'em. Another factor is that it will often cost you more to refurbish a bike than it is worth hence someone giving it away. Many bikes that have fallen are worth more when broken into parts and sold on E bay. Good luck with your hunt but you are looking for a fabled find among motorcyclists. The old free bike I found in a barn!

What could be wrong with my motorbike (battery)?

The alternator on a motorcycle is only sized large enough to maintain the battery and operate the lights. It may have a difficult time charging a completely dead battery.

I would do this. Before you even attempt any sort of diagnostics you need to start with a fully charged battery.

Remove the battery from the bike and put it on a battery charger. Charge at a rate of no more than 2 amps. Anything more than 2 amps will damage the battery.

Best if you can use one of the modern fully automatic microprocessor controlled battery chargers. However, in a pinch a manual charger will do. But you will need to guess when the battery is fully charged. Usually between 3 to 4 hours at 2 amps. If the battery will not accept a charge, replace the battery with a new one.

Install the battery in the bike.

Next you will need a multi meter. Set the meter to the closest range that is above 12 volts DC. With the ignition off and nothing on, place the leads across the battery terminals. The meter should read 12 volts, +/- about 1/2 volt.

Now start the engine and set the idle to about 1200 RPM. Connect the leads of the meter across the battery. The meter should now read between 14 to 16 volts. If the meter still reads 12 volts either the alternator or voltage regulator is not working.

Sometimes there is nothing wrong with admitting that you are getting in over your head. If you feel that you are getting in over your head you should just bring the bike to a reputable motorcycle mechanic. Yes it will be expensive. But how expensive will it get if you do not get the bike repaired correctly the first time.

MotorCycle spare tire mounts?

Where can Spire bike tires for the motorcycle you have, be mounted on your motorcycle without the addition of a side car. I have found a single exsample but need more, several would be preferred.

What i'd like is a few photos or links to photos of the possible variations in mounting a spare tire for your motorcycle on your motor cycle, WITHOUT the addition of a side cart.

What do I need to do to be able to ride a motorbike in UK?

Basically you will need to obtain a provisional driving licence if you don't have one already, then take a CBT. You will then be able to ride a motorcycle of up to 125cc as a learner until your CBT expires. After this, you will want to take lessons and go for your motorcycle tests. The whole procedure, from start to finish can be found on http://motorbiketesthq.co.uk. Good luck and ride safe!

1988 Kawasaki GT 550 Motorbike loses power after warming up.?

I recently bought a 1988 kawasaki GT 550 with the intension of using it for a daily commuter and smartening it up a bit. The problem is that when it starts to warm up the sound becomes muffled and acceleration is dampened. The power seems a lot less and some times as i'm giving it more revs to compensate for the loss of power it'll jump back up to normal power suddenly and jerk forward with a burst. But then just as quickly lose power again. The bike will still run, just pulling by. But as i slow or come to a set of lights i have keeping the revs up high to keep it from stalling.

This problem only occurs when its warmed up, i can get about 10 kilometers before it starts to have a problem. It starts fine and sounds great but as it warms it all seems to go out the window. what could it be?

With the sale i also got a write off spare parts bike that has most original parts intact.

I am 31, and don't know how to ride a motorbike. How do I learn bike, repair and riding if I don't know anyone with a bike to spare?

I am also 31 and from India and I did not know how to ride a scooter, leave aside a bike till two years ago. You won't believe but I approached car driving institutes to teach me how to ride a two wheeler and they refused.I had to go through really tough rides in autos (shared) to make it to the office everyday. Then my wife encouraged me to buy a scooter and start to practice near home. I did not have anyone to lend me a vehicle to try, so I went ahead and bought a scooter for myself. It took me two weeks of practice near my home to feel confident and then I went ahead and got a learner license. Rest was history.I am sure you can give it a try if you really want to! No point in feeling old at 31 when you can still overcome a serious mental block! Trust me; overcoming this has been a big confidence booster. Yes, you may feel you don't need confidence boosters at 31, but it is different.

What is the best motorcycle spare parts finder?

Believe me, all the local stores have overhead prices. Online shopping has always been the cheapest way to purchase whatever you need. To be sure, simply get on any spare parts finder website, e.g. Parts.fo Specify the spare part you are interested in, and the website will start comparing the deals from many parts suppliers. The search results will show you how different the dealers’ and retailers’ prices are. You will also see the list of best offers available and will be able to choose the right deal. The last time I used Part.fo I had saved nearly 95 dollars!Indeed, Internet has many good online shops (the one is mentioned above). They are great if you don’t care how much you spend. But most of shoppers will never refuse from catching a valuable bargain. Spare part finders in this way are the real catches.
