Motorcycle Transmission Gears Not Engaging

Motorcycle transmission gears not engaging?

When was the last time you changed the oil? The clutch is most likely the problem, and needs to be cleaned and adjusted. The shifter return springs or shift forks, inside the transmission could be at fault, but The shift lever would be hanging up,until you let the clutch out, what I would do first,Is,drain the oil into a clean pan. look for sludge or metal particles in the used oil.If the oil has lots of metal particles, take it to a repair shop,if it is just dirty and thick, change the filter and put in fresh oil. Then I would adjust the clutch. The Honda Rebel Forum can help you with the details,if you want to try it yourself.

I have a motorcycle and the clutch will not engage into gears but it still moves. What causes it and how much is it to fix it? It's a 2017 Honda from with 1 down 3.

If the clutch cannot ‘engage’, it’s too tight, and it’s not allowing the clutch plates to fully engage when you release the lever. If you get any power at all, you’ll get clutch slip under any high-torque situation, and also burn out your clutch plates. If the clutch cannot disengage, it’s too loose, and the clutch always has some friction even when fully pulled. Again, this can burn the clutch plates, but less so than a too-tight clutch. There’s usually two adjustment points for the clutch cable, one where it connects to the transmission, and one at the lever. Each one is a knurled threaded washer over a spiral-cut hollow bolt. Turning the washer ‘down’ the cable pulls it more snug, whilst turning it ‘up’ the cable (toward the lever) will loosen the cable tension. The one at the transmission works the same way.If you’ve a hydraulic clutch (with a fluid reservoir off the lever and a hose leading to the transmission) then you’re probably looking at air bubbles in the hydraulics; since gases can compress and fluids cannot, the presence of air, a gas, means squeezing the lever compresses the gas, instead of moving the piston at the transmission end. This means your clutch doesn’t work well, if at all. The cure is to ‘bleed’ the system, which simply means you flush the air out, but only allow fresh fluid in. It’s a simple process, but can be … tedious.Clutch adjustments and brake/clutch bleeds are standard maintenance, and any mechanic should be able to quote you shop hours to do them. A good mechanic could probably have a cable clutch adjusted in 15–30 minutes, and a hydraulic clutch bled properly in 30 minutes to an hour.

What are some tips on shifting gears while riding a motorcycle? How do you shift from 1st to 2nd and to neutral?

I’m also a beginner like you, I can suggest you few tips with the knowledge I have. First of all, don’t learn to ride a bike, instead study the bike. The way how it responds to you. There is a language that your bike communicates with you. The more you understand your bike, the very skillful rider you become. Usually, bikes with 5+ gears have a pattern of 1-N-2–3–4–5–6. Clutch play in bikes varies from bikes to bikes and it also depends on the individuals how they maintain it(Half clutch, full clutch, etc) Coming to the point, 1st gear is usually used to move your bike from rest. Once it starts moving, you can shift it to second gear with a brisk movement of your foot (lift the gear lever to top with your foot). Remember, if you don’t apply enough pressure to shift, you will probably end up with NEUTRAL and not second gear. Never mind, you still have another chance of immediately shifting it to second gear provided you have not stopped or halted your bike. You can reach maximum RPMs with every gear. Probably you can shift it to next gear when your RPM hits 4–6k (depends). When you are slowing down remember to lower your gear or else your bike will give you few jerks and stops at the spot itself. Clutch is the trump card in this play, you have to know when to pull and release the clutch properly, which you will get used to it once you start riding few miles. Avoid unnecessary usage of clutch(For ex: unnecessarily holding clutch thinking that will save your fuel by running smooth.. WRONG!! You are damaging the engine and wasting a lot of fuel in actual!!), shift gears as soon as you pull the clutch lever, release slowly and gradually as you rev the throttle. While halting your bike, you have to apply brakes slowly and when the speed is reduced below 25kmph, hold the clutch and just stop it. You can down shift later. As days goes on, you will know how to stop it by down shifting(though it not advised to follow :P) Tap the gears slowly so that you get the neutral. If you miss, you will end up in first gear and then you can very slowly lift it to neutral.Happy riding!

2006 bmw 525i "transmission fault, gears can be engaged without depressing the brakes. drive moderately. What can it be?

should have a code telling you what the fault is. auto zone usually does the scan for nothing but I don't know for sure if it will cover the BMW system. find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help. might be a solenoid problem since you can shut the car off. and then it will work fine for awhile. what you're doing is resetting the computer then when the problem occurs the car goes fail safe which is in second gear not first

My motorcycle is having gear shifting problem. It's not smooth, how do I fix it?

With due respect to all the people who have tried to answer and help, I have something different to say.Your question can not get a useful answer from Quora. What would be a useful answer? You have a problem with your motorcycle, you state it here, it is understood by someone who can help, then he answers, you act on that answer yourself and your problem is solved. The above will not happen because there is no (can not be) clarity in any of the steps. We do not even know how much you know about bikes, what bike it is, how old, whether some part is broken, what exactly is meant by not smooth…..So please go to a mechanic (preferably Authorised by the manufacturer) and show him the bike, he should be able to solve the problem. Here it can only be shooting in the dark.

Why does my motorcycle stall when I put it into gear?

1st most obvious: you did not pull the clutch. But I assume you know how to operate itThen probably your side stand is out. Most bikes have a safety feature that cuts off the ignition to avoid you driving off with the stand out.Another thing could be that your bike just runs poor when cold and when you shift, the engine gets a little more resistance, which is enough to cut off. When the bike is warmed up this should be fixed. Otherwise try shifting in to gear in between opening the throttle. And let the clutch slip gently with enough throttle so it won't stall. Or start the engine with gear engaged and clutch pulled. And drive away smoothly.

Why does the gear shifter of my motorcycle get stuck while shifting from higher to lower gears?

Well, the gear lever getting stuck or not clicking into its proper place does resemble the symptoms of a loose clutch cable.Do you normally ride in a B2B traffic? Or any condition where you have to use too many gearshifts? Anything which involves too many gearshifts puts a strain on the clutch, the clutchwire and the clutch assembly.Frequent use of the clutch might have made the clutch cable loose which might have resulted in the clutch NOT being fully engaged even if the gear is completely engaged.Get the clutch cable tightened or replaced in the next service. Hopefully that would sort out the issue.Ciao.

1987 honda cr250, clutch not engaging?

First make sure that you have around 3/4 of an inch play at the end of your clutch handle. If it is tight and no play the clutch is not engaging.

Other things it could be: need new clutches, stripped gears in transmission.

Good luck
