Mouth Fungus Help Betta And Gouramis Infected.

What is wrong with my fish? His mouth looks like it is deteriorating?

columnaris usually means problem with water condition, and fungus (white fuzzy stuff) also points to that.

The first thing you need to do is to do a couple of major water change in the next one week and get the appropriate medication and treat as recommended.

I know most people don't use a hospital tank, but I seriously do recommend that you use one for treatment, especially if u have more than one fish in the tank and the others are not infected.

Pink Kissing Gourami Mouth Fungus?

My pink kissy fish, which i have had for over a year and is 5 inches in length apparetly has a bacterial infection of some sort that is eating away his mouth. At first his lip were extremely swollen but now it appears his lips are gone and there is no oral cavity left. His mouth is totally blocked and he is unable to eat. At first he was very inactive, however since i have been treating him with melafix (since tuesday) he is becoming more active but infection doesn't seem that much better! Does anyone have a opinion of what to further do to help this fish? is it hopeless? it looks like he has a hard time breathing as well at the surface like he used to. (kissys are surface breathers)

Help!! Fungus or malachite green?

>1. Did the malachite green do 'em in, or the fungus?

Either one, I know this sounds fague, however MG is more toxic to catfish. MG should be used at half does in the presence of most catfish AND buffered (meaning a KH of at least 50 and a GH of at least 100 as this where many go wring with Malachite Green).
That said the fungus very well may have gotten your fish first.

>2. What IS the fungus?

Fungus is different from protozoa (ich), bacteria (the often easily confused Columnaris or Flexibacter).
Fungi are organisms that are sexual and asexual reproduction is via spores,

>3. How do I cure the fungus before I put more fish in, or did the MG take care of it?

Assuming it is fungus (not flexibacter, please see this for identification: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/... ).
You might consider a treatment that involves a lower amount of Malachite Green and copper.
Other treatments of note that I have used are Pimafix, Medicated Wonder Shells (which will also address water quality issues), and Triple Sulfa.
If all fish were lost, potassium Permanganate is a useful treatment for the whole tank (hopefully it will not be needed)

I also recommend treatment in a quarantine tank and 30 minute baths in Methylene blue for infected fish.

>4. I'm not certain I want to replace the danios & sharks - what would co-exist w/ the remaining danios & still be easy to keep & colorful?

Consider many of the Gouramis, there are many large Tetras such as Red Minors or Buenos Aires. Many Barbs such as the Rosy Barbs are but a few suggestions. I have a Golden Killi that is a lot of fun and very active.

Finally, please check your water parameters as Fungus and many bacterial infections such as Coumnaris/Flexibacteria are diseases of opportunity.
Simply throwing in medication to poor water (despite the best intentions) will be ineffective or worse.
Make sure you have electrolytes present too during problems like this such as salt, calcium and magnesium.

Make sure and check thes as well:
*Ammonia/ nitrites- 0
*Nitrates- under 50
*pH- stable
*Kh- 50+
HG- 100 +

Need help urgently, Betta has really bad mouth fungus?

You may have a fungus or protozoans, but considering the problem started on your fishes face, I would warn you that you may have what's commonly called mouth fungus or mouth rot. This is actually a bacterial infection called columnaris that looks very much like a fungus. Due to the speed at which the problem spread, I feel rather sure you have columnaris in the tank and fungus medications will not kill columnaris.

You say you think he caught it from another fish, this makes me think you have had other recent disease problems, so I would suggest you treat the entire tank, not just the one sick fish.

To treat effectively for both possible problems, you will need a good fungus medication as well as an antibiotic. Bettafix is not going to solve this problem, it's far too weak to treat an actual infection.

I would suggest you treat the fish with a combination of Maroxy for the fungus or protozoan possibility and Maracyn TC for the columnaris. They are very effective and can be used in combination with each other without a problem. Just treat as recommended on the packages but treat for 10 days no matter how much better the fish looks or what the package says, it really is needed to be sure you have cleared up the problem.

If I can help further feel free to email me.

My betta is sick please help me?

my betta has velvet (oodinium) and maybe fin rot too, (not sore) and how do i cure it? i know that i should core the velvet with aquarium salt, butt how do i cure fin rot? and what's the difference of aquarium salt and normal salt? and do my other fish (armored catfish very small 4 cm long) that is in the same tank die if i use some medic to my betta if he has fin rot? and what happens if i use medic and he is not sick? butt if he has not fin rot, so why is his dorsal fin in two pieces (only on he top)? please answer, i don't want that he should die.

What can cause a betta fish to die?

A betta fish can die because of several reasons such as; 1. Overfeeding; generally causes constipation like symptoms and fish will have huge belly and this may affect the swim bladder so he is unable to swim properly and will die. I think if we compare overfeeding to not feeding, overfeeding causes more death. 2. Lack of proper diet; bettas are carnivore fish and they need high quality of protein sources. It is better to provide him live or frozen food. 3. Improper water conditions; even though bettas can survive in a small quantity of water putting too much food will poison the water and the fish will die. 4. Cold water; another misconception is betta can survive in room tempurature, it is not completely wrong, they can somehow survive but if you can call it living. You should have at least 25 degree Celsius to see the beauty of this fish. Fish will swim less if the water is too cold for him. 5. Other diseases; cold, fluctuating temperature of water, dirty water can cause several disaeses such as fungi and white spot, leading to death. 6. Improper tank mates; though its common name is Siamese Fighting Fish, they generally fight each other which causes death to one of them and they generally cannot compete with other fish. Since they are slow swimmers and cannot dive too long-they need to breath air from the surface- , they are just nipped, chased continously so on... 7. Jumping out of the water, Betta fish tend to jump out of the water to catch something so that will apparently cause death. You should put a lid over his tank. 8. Stress; disturbing the fish by humans, other fish or fluctuating water parameters may cause stress and the fish will try to hide himself anywhere he could find and the end will come. 9. Improper tank installation; if the tank was decorated with spiny hard objects and small caves betta may become stuck to them and may die. If the water motion is too much in the tank, betta will not compete with that as well.  10. Old age; every living thing has a life span, and that day will eventually come. IMO the biggest cruelty exposed to this beatiful and noble fish is putting them in to the small cups. They deserve properly maintained tank and good diet, if you cannot provide it simply just do not buy it.

Mouth fungus treatment with malachite green?

Give him some time to heal the wounds caused by 'fungus'. Don't worry If his appetite drops off a bit. Fish have taste buds all around their mouths, detecting food even before they swallow it. With mouth sores, they're unable to 'smell'/'taste' it in the water to recognize it as edible even though they can see it's food. His appetite will likely return when his lips heal. Since Malachite green is often in solution with formalin, caution should be applied not to overdose.

While typically used for true fungus, Malachite green is also effective for mouth fungus (columnaris, a bacterial infection), as well as traditional antibiotics. It's just not commonly known.

Bettafix remedy?

My fish has a fungal infection on his face and a bit of tail rot, I have been using Bettafix for 4 days so far, and my fish looks the same, I know the directions say to use for 7 days, or longer .

My question is, when do I stop uisng this medicine, do I stop using it when his infection clears up , or when his tail is in better condition? Or is 7 days of medication enough?

After 7 days of using this medication is it safe enough to put him in a tank with the other fish (with a divider)?
