Moving To Georgia Kennesaw Or The City Of Decatur

Advice for a california girl moving to atlanta georgia?

The only advice I can give you is to be prepared. Come to ATL a few times for a visit. Not as a tourist but as somebody looking for a job and a home. learn about the different neighborhoods and sections of town. Figure out where it is you want to live.

Find a job before you pack your first box. DO NOT move all the way across the country with no job. It might take you 6 months to find good work and how are you going to pay your bills and raise children without a job. Your cash is going to burn up quick if you aren't earning money the day after you move in.

Avoid the west end and the southside. Those are the low income areas. I won't call them all ghettos but many would.

The best areas are all north of town. North of I-20. Decatur, Stone Mountain, Lilburn, Lithonia are all very nice middle class suburban areas where you would feel at home (majority black).

Traffic stinks no matter where you go. Can't escape it. So try to find work close by home or a home close by work. But many of us drive 1 hour or more to work every day.

You'll have 30 days to transfer your CA drivers license to a GA license. Same with your cars. 30 days to get them registered in the state and buy GA tags.

If your children are school aged check the Gwinnett county schools, Fulton county schools and Cobb county schools. Avoid Dekalb county schools and city of Atlanta schools. They are both a mess and they are suffering under disfuctional school boards.

What is it like to live in Kennesaw, GA?

Pretty good. I came here to work from So. Calif.. When my headhunter called me at work in LA and tried to entice me to take another job, which would result in a big fat commission for him, I posed the scenario that if he could get me the interviews with an airline in Atlanta, GA I'd go. I was a computer guy with 30 years experience and had great skills so usually getting another job was never a problem. I'd been getting itchy feet anyway and had always fantasized about working for an airline because of their excellent travel benefits for employees and their family. I could go on for pages about travel benefits, but mainly I'd heard that you get free rides wherever you want to go in the world for practically nothing (true, but getting a ride home can be a challenge because certain flights from Europe are crowded).I bought one of those CDs with all the relevant demographics on it for the US. Crime rates, employment rates, cost-of-living figures, avg temperature and rainfall, and schools (grades 1–12). Looking at the whole country there was a bright spot on Atlanta, GA. Also Raleigh/Durham NC and a few other places, but since I was interested in computer work for the airlines Atlanta was it. Kennesaw is only a stone's throw north of Atlanta and had a lot of real estate ads in the Sunday Atlanta paper, which I could acquire real easy locally.I bought a ranch-style 3BR, 2ba house, (fully finished basement) in Kennesaw for 140,000 that you couldn't get for 400,000 in LA. I couldn't have even made the down payment in LA. It was out in the country in the woods, green everywhere, deer and birds abound, I loved it after living where you could stand between 2 houses and stretch out your hands and literally touch both houses at the same time. There were only 4 houses on our whole cul-de-sac. I love it here for the quality of living and privacy.

Is it legal or illegal to dumpster dive in Kennesaw ga? I have done tons of research but I can t seem to find anything on dd in Sw Georgia.?

That shouldn't be illegal. When someone throws something away, they relinquish any ownership rights.

What are the advantages of living in Atlanta, GA compared to Miami, FL?

Advantages:Cheaper rent: A two bedroom apartment should be less than $1000. House prices are considerably lower than Miami.Better weather: Low humidity than Miami, all seasons are visible, none too strong to cause a discomfort.Job opportunity: Specifically for IT and finance, Atlanta is getting hotter every day. Other than tourism and service, Miami has no other significant industry. Atlanta has more than 20 Fortune 500 companies in its vicinity, compared to 3–4 in Miami. Headquarters of some of the biggest companies like Coca-cola, Home Depot, Delta Airlines, UPS are in Atlanta.Connectedness: Atlanta airport is a major US airport and provides one of the best domestic and international connectivity. Three major interstates 75, 85 and 20 as well as an Amtrack line cross through Atlanta. Atlanta is geographically within a short driving distance of Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Northern Florida (Panama City, Jacksonville).Better schools: Georgia Tech, Emory and Georgia state are some of the top-ranked schools in the US.Better traffic: Still better than Miami, but that may not be the case as a large number of people are pouring into Atlanta. Local roads are spacious and drivers are much more well behaved compared to Miami.Better hiking opportunity: Stone mountain, Kennesaw mountain and lots of other excellent hiking places. There are beautiful lakes like the Allatoona and Lanier for water fun. The smoky mountain national park is a 3-hour drive.Better Indian foods and groceries: Probably the best one after New York for this category.Diverse population: Atlanta is becoming a truly cosmopolitan city. You will find an eclectic array of ethnicity represented in the city (partly due to the world-renowned universities and their students) and excellent cuisine choices resulting from that.Full of trees: Georgia is the greenest state in the US. Atlanta probably has 10x more trees than an average US city.No alligators :-)No frequent devastating hurricanes. (added from comment)

What are the best areas to live in Atlanta, Georgia?

If you have young kids and can afford it, Decatur is by far the best place to live. They have some of the most amazing schools and a very involved community. If you’re a recent college graduate, West Midtown is great. The rent is relatively affordable and the area is walkable. Ansley Park, Morningside, and Virgina Highlands are fantastic as well. Buckhead and Brookhaven are rather pretentious. If you’re looking to go OTP, I’d only consider North Fulton. East Cobb may have been an option 30 years ago; but since Alpharetta, Roswell, and Johns Creek have taken off it’s become rather trashy and obnoxious. Corruption runs rampant through the county government and you don’t find the most intelligent lot as a whole. You’ll end up diving to Fulton to do anything worthwhile. You may have to pay slightly more in taxes to be in Fulton or DeKalb but it’s well worth it. Spend a little bit of time driving in the different areas and you’ll quickly figure it out.
