My 19 Month Old Terrified Of Some Liquid Like

Nipple piercing... need someone with knowledge?

Piercers keep a secret: Nipples weep and crust for months.

They don't tell the average customer because they don't want you to mistake an infection for something that is normal. Unfortunately the reverse happens.

Nipples take months to heal. They have good days and bad days. They crust for a very long time and all you can do it keep them clean with sea salt soaks or anti-bacterial soap.

If you are taking about a white-ish or clear discharge that can dry on your jewlery to a light yellow, then that is still normal for quite a few months. The little sacks of fluid are of a little more concern.

Be sure that your jewlery is not too tight for your piercing. Hoops should be slightly wider in diameter than your nipple. What you were pierced with may not be large enough anymore as most nipples enlarge a little after piercing. Take a look and make sure your skin has plenty of room in your jewlery. If the balls of a barbell form a seal with your piercing then little sacs can develop. The same goes for a hoop that is stretching the edges of your piercing and pulling them tight.

If your jewlery is correctly fitted then you might be getting these little sacks just because your piercing feels it hasnt been cleaned well enough. You may be cleaning it just fine, but a nipple is a very long piercing and can stubbornly hold onto dirt.

If your piercings were infected they would ooze a fair amount of pus and would most likely be sore. When you have an infection you will usually know it. It is something you will recognize when you see it.

Clean your piercings with saline solution at least once a day. You can also perform a sea salt soak on them by warming the solution as hot as is comfortable and soaking the area for about ten minutes. This will help draw out any material that may be in your piercing. Do this until the weeping stops.

After it clears up you will still need to clean your nipples daily. They can still get irritated from time to time, but as long as you keep them clean they will heal.

If you don't see an improvement or just need more reassurance then go to a piercer! They are there to take a look at things for you and give you advice on keeping piercings healthy. Show them the problem and they will be able to tell you whats going on and how to help.

Is it normal that my 13-year-old daughter can't swallow pills? The pills she takes are tiny, and I can easily swallow them when I'm sick. She always wants to eat her pills in yogurt, but I want her to learn how to do it. What's wrong with her?

Oh my goodness, we just had a major issue with this with our 11-year-old.It’s a long story but we were on vacation in the US and my daughter got acute appendicitis. She had to have emergency surgery and a week’s rest in hospital, with plenty of IV antibiotics (the appendix had well and truly ruptured, so it was pretty major). In order to be discharged, she had to learn to take oral antibiotics, two every few hours. Well, she’s never been sick in her life before, so this was a new skill to learn, and it didn’t go well.Oddly enough, the first attempt was a total success. After that it wasn’t. I don’t know, perhaps she was just overthinking it, but she could NOT swallow the pills. And they quickly turned to a vile paste in her mouth that had her gagging and retching. The nurse was very patient and tried everything, but after half a hour gave up. Then we tried, and things went downhill fast. Much tears, screaming, and general hysterics. So we gave up.But that meant another night in hospital on IV, so she realised she’d have to do it otherwise we were never getting out of there. In the meantime we got some expert advice from a different staff nurse. She said the trick wasn’t to tip your head back. It seems everyone does this when taking pills, but we don’t swallow food that way, so why pills? I tried it myself to see if she was right, and what do you know, she was! It was WAY easier to swallow when keeping the head in a normal position, or even just dipping your chin downwards a little. The opposite of what everyone thinks you should do!And that fixed it. Just a little water up front, throw the pill in, chin down, and swallow. Works like a charm every time.

Why are cats afraid of water? Why do most cats fear/hate getting wet? Are there any biological, psychological or behavioral explanations for this?

Cats have deep ear canals.(Here’s a human ear for comparison)Remember that the cat is a lot smaller than a human so while the ear itself is large, the inside is pretty tiny. Also you can see the angle. Why is this important? If moisture gets trapped in the ear it’s hard to get out, which can lead to infection. It’s why you see all cats position themselves to avoid getting the inside of their ears wet. Even Turkish Vans (We have several of them) who will sit in the rain are careful to avoid getting water inside their ears. It’s why ear mites are common in stray cats. Whatever gets inside the ear won’t easily come out.The other reason is that most cats have an undercoat:The undercoat has no protection against moisture. If it gets wet it gets soaked and holds the water close to the skin like a wet tee shirt. This is dangerous for cats in colder weather because if it gets soaked they will be in danger of hypothermia and can die quickly.Turkish Vans have oily fur and no undercoat so that their skin doesn’t get soaked in the rain and if they go in the water their fur will shed the water quickly and with a good shake, kind of like a dog.Edit:I’ve been asked to share some Turkish Van cat pictures:Here you go:GermanicusA temporary boarder who now has a new permanent home and Celia in the background. We have more of them, but this is enough.
