My 5 Month Old Cat Fleas And Comfortis

Is comfortis safe for my cat?

My 7 month year old kitten had gotten fleas. he weighs about 7lbs. I had brought him to the vet and they had given him advantage 2 for cats. he then developed awful adverse effects 8 hours later, he became lethargic. I woke up with him laying on me and felt stiff as a board. I was petrified!! he was very lymph and wouldn't and couldn't move, he randomly would have muscle spasms in his back legs, and ear twitching. he was scaring me and it was 4 in the morning so I had called the Emergency vet and she had told me to bathe him and get all the medicine off. So i did that and in a few hours he was back to himself. a week has gone by and he still has fleas! ive tried bathing him twice within that week but nothing is working. I am scare to death to try and medication, that was horrifying i thought I was going to lose him. The vet had given me a new medicine to try, Comfortis for cats, its an oral pill. However, everything i read online sounds either really good or really bad. it says right on the prescription, "Do not take if your cat has a history of seizures" I don't think he experienced a seizure, but he was not ok after the advantage. SO i am just wondering if anyone has tried this comfortis and how was it? OR actually if anyone else had their cats experience horrible side effects from topical medications and then tried this comfortis and how did it work?? I just do not want to risk my cats life over this. but i NEED to get rid of these fleas. Thank you!!

My dog is on comfortis but still finding fleas?

Ever since my puppy BC was old enough he has been on Advantix monthly. He is now a year old and despite the monthly Advantix he has got fleas. I think he also has Flea Allergy Dermatitis from the hot spots, flaking and hair loss on his back / backs of his hind legs / base of his tail. So naturally, we washed him with flea treatment, cleaned the house, flea sprayed the house and re-administered his Advantix top spot. None of this seemed to work, he still had the fleas, so he's now on Comfortis. It's been almost a week since we gave him the Comfortis and although he was still itching (which they say isn't unusual) I thought I could see an improvement, however today I ran a flea comb through his hair (only for about 2 mins) and found two fleas! Is my dog resistant to all flea medication?? We don't seem to have a flea infestation, I've never seen any in the house and we don't have any carpets. Anyone else with the same experience?

How do I get rid of fleas on 6 month old kittens?

First get Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution from the vet to treat the cats. These products are intended to be used once a month to keep fleas off the cat.

Then, if you need to treat the house - which is often the case - use a product which not only kills adult fleas but also prevents eggs from hatching.

When we have bad flea years (haven't had one in along time - knock on wood :-) we use Raid products for the house.

They make a fogger called Raid ® : Flea Killer Plus Fogger

http://www.killsbugsdead.com/fop_fkpf.as...

They also make an area spray called Raid ® : Flea Killer Plus Carpet & Room Spray

http://www.killsbugsdead.com/fop_fk_pc_r...

We have had very good results with those products.

Remember, you want a product that not only kills adult fleas but also prevents eggs from hatching. If you use something that does not prevent the eggs from hatching, when they hatch you are back where you started.

There is a product, Capstar, which is a pill you give the cat. It kills all of the fleas on the cat within about 5 hours.

http://www.capstar.novartis.us/

It does not provide long lasting protection - it merely kills all the fleas on the cat.

You can use it to kill all the fleas on the cat and then treat the cat with Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution, and then treat the cat.

Ask your vet about Capstar and using it in combination with other products.

Capstar is available only by prescription.

We have used it to kill all the fleas on feral cats who we could not handle to apply something else. We transfer them to another cage or carrier, move them out of the room, fog the room, give them the Capstar in food, and then put them back in the main cage.

Capstar is like magic - it really will kill all of the fleas on a cat very quickly and it is safe enough that you could use it every day, if need be - though that would be an expensive way to control fleas, day to day.

Indoor cats can get fleas that people carry in on their clothes. If you think that might be happening, get an insecticide you can spray on the yard to kill fleas.

You will probably need to get a sprayer. The ones that attach to the end of a hose might be the type you could use.

Ask the people at a garden store, Lowes, or Home Depot, or similar store for help picking an insecticide and a sprayer.

Dog threw up after taking her comfortis pill (flea prevention) and eating her dinner?? read plz?

Vomiting is the most common side effect of Comfortis. According to the package you should re-dose if your dog vomits within an hour after taking the pill. If it's longer than an hour it should have absorbed into the system.

Gave my dog Comfortis for fleas, shes still scratching?

I found out yesterday at the vet my dog has fleas. They gave her comfortis, but she's still scratching herself all over. Every place she scratches we check for fleas but don't see anything. We haven't even seen the fleas in the house and she's had them for probably a week. Could she be scratching from previous bites, having allergies to the medicine, still getting bit? I've cleaned my house top to bottom. I haven't bombed it because I'm pregnant and can't be around any fumes. I don't know what to think!!! Help?!?

Has anyone ever used Comfortis flea pills for dogs?

We have only used it when animal is infested and likely anemic due to the infestation.
We do not dispense it for monthly flea prevention as it is a systemic drug.
Topical products like Frontline,Revolution,Advantage/tix work well and do not involve systemic circulation.
With frontline the drug is stored in the sebacous glands just waiting fo a flea or tick to bite.
Comfortis is said to begin killing the fleas in 30 minutes.
If you believe the Comfotis is causing your dog to be itchy I would encourage you to call the company to report it.
Its hard to say how long he will be uncomfortable since it is a systemic dug.
So phone the company as Im sure they know as likely your dog is not the first to react in such a way.
Also phone your vet or an ER facility to get a proper dose for benadryl.

Is there an injections for my dog and cats for fleas?

Like someone already mentioned, there is an injection called Program that is for cats only, not dogs. This acts like a flea birth control, it just prevents the eggs from hatching. Both the Program pill form and injection form do not kill adult fleas, so this is not recommended for active flea infestations. You can use this in conjunction with Capstar, which starts killing adult fleas in 30 minutes, but it only lasts for 24 hours. Comfortis is another oral pill that is similar to Capstar, but it lasts for 30 days. Comfortis is highly recommended for active flea infestations. Trifexis also contains spinosad which is the active ingredient in Comfortis. Trifexis has a heartworm preventative in it as well. Topicals that are applied to the skin vary in reliability, depending on where you live and how severe the fleas are. Revolution is great for fleas for both cats and dogs, and a lot of people have success with Advantage or Frontline Tritak. However, in order for the topicals to work properly, the animal needs to have healthy skin and healthy skin oils. If your dog/cat has dry, flaky skin, he may not be a good candidate for a topical.

It is possible to wipe out a flea infestation by just treating the animal, but it takes time, up to 3 months. You can speed up the process by treating the environment. Remember that a very small percentage of the flea population actually live on your dog or cat. The eggs, larvae, and pupae stages are all in the environment. Also keep in mind that NOTHING can kill the pupa (cocoon) stage. This is why fleas are so frustrating to get rid of and and why it takes time. Vacuum often, and when you do, empty the canister or throw away the bag often, preferably on garbage day, so that the pupae are out of the vicinity and can hatch somewhere else. Wash bedsheets and pet beds weekly and treat any rugs or carpeting with a permethrin-free flea killer (permethrins are highly toxic to cats, NEVER apply a topical flea medication intended for dogs).

Can a cat die from fleas?

Yes, fleas can drain a cat's blood. You could use a flea barrier to prevent fleas from settling on your cat’s furry coat. I am sure you are thinking, what is a flea barrier? Flea barriers are products that you put on your cat to prevent fleas from infesting on your car. There are different types of flea barrier, some of which include sprays, traditional dust and shampoos. These products can be purchased from a veterinary doctor or an online store. You could also consult your veterinary doctor, or read through the product label instruction for guidance on how to apply flea barriers on your cat. Most flea barrier products are made with substances that include;ImidcaclopidFipronilSelamectinA flea collar that contains both imidacloprid (Seresto) and flumethrin can function properly as a flea barrier.Cat flea medicines like Nitenpyram (Capstar) which is usually consumed by a cat can kill adult fleas in about 30minutes after consumption without any known side effects. Spinosad (Comfortis) offers 30-day flea protection to help stop the future spread of fleas. This is mainly because it kills the fleas before they begin to produce eggs.Source of information : Flea Bites

Why is my cat foaming at mouth after a flea treatment?

If the flea treatment was topical frontline, advantage, or revolution, he is probably okay. Those products are pretty safe even if he licked a little of it, but they taste horrible. Cats foam at the mouth after tasting or smelling anything they really hate, such as oral antibiotics! If foaming at the mouth is all he does and it only lasts less than 15 minutes but he seems fine in every other respect (and you used one of those products) he is probably fine, no need to call a local vet.BUT….there are a number of over the counter flea and tick products that are very toxic to cats. Never use one labelled for a dog or any other species on a cat, never put anything on a kitten less than 6 weeks old without clearing it (and the dose) with your local vet first, and make sure you put a feline flea product on the back of the NECK, not between the shoulder blades. Cats can lick their shoulder blades and even their lower back of the neck. I put my cat flea products high on the back of the neck near the head. There are even some flea products labelled for cats that have caused serious neurological problems and death. These cats don’t foam, though, they yowl and tremble and have trouble walking and then develop seizures. If you used a product different than frontline, advantage, or revolution labelled for the size cat you have and the cat shows ANY OTHER SYMPTOMS besides drooling or the drooling lasts longer than 15 minutes, wash the product off using a strong dish soap like Dawn dishwashing liquid. Repeat the shampoo/rinse cycle at least 3–5 times before stopping, and have somebody call the vet or the animal poison control number while you are doing this. Time is of the essence when removing these products from the skin, because they absorb very quickly. Just to let you know, it costs $70 to call the animal control poison control, they will not give you information for free. If it is during business hours, you could call the number of the company that made the product (its always on the box) but please wash the stuff off while you have someone call, don’t call first! Depending what the product was, you may be able to save the cat if you act quickly. Good luck to you!

Can't get rid of fleas?

Every single year we get the same problem over and over again...fleas. We live in CT, where it's hot and humid in the summer and the fleas love the hot and humid weather so they multiply. Each month we put Frontline on both the dog and cat. I also sprinkle salt on the carpets and vacuum it up the next day. I've given the dog a bath with dawn dish soap, we've bombed the house...nothing seems to work. My dog is allergic to fleas and is VERY itchy. The vets tell us they can't treat her because it's fleas. It's so bad, she is basically bald on her back legs, tail, and lower back. When she itches and bites herself, she cries. I feel so bad for her, but nothing seems to work. We deal with this every summer and can't get rid of them no matter what we do. I go in the basement with white socks and find about 20 on each one, no joke. Does anybody have any suggestions, they're disgusting and making my dog and cat miserable? (especially my dog)

Thanks!
