My 6 Year Old Female German Shepherd Keeps Throwing Up

At what age does a male German Shepherd stop peeing like a puppy, and raise his leg?

I have a 21 month old, 70lb, neutered male German Shepherd, and he still pees like a puppy (on all four paws).
I was just wondering when he's gonna throw up that little leg of his.
For male German Shepherd owners who had your dog from a young age to adulthood, when do they usually start raising their leg to pee?
I know this is a silly question, but I'm just curious.
The last couple of days he has been barely putting his foot up a little as he goes, like he's getting the idea to raise his leg. But most of the time he goes like a puppy still.

My 10 week old german shepherd /lab mis keeps throwing up???

I am assuming your girl has had at least her first vaccinations and has been wormed and rechecked for worms.

I suggest taking her temperature; leave in rectally for at least 1 minute or take twice if using a digital. This may tell you a lot. Puppies will be hotter in temp than adults. I would not worry if temp is 100 to 102. If it's above 103 Fahrenheit , that could be a warning.

Take the temperature in a few more hours and see if it's going up. Check again later. This way you will have the temp you get now and can see if there is any difference.

I would try either ice cubes to slow her down or put big objects in her water so she has to lap around them. Interrupt her while drinking to see if maybe she'll quit before getting much. Don't let her get hot in hoping she will not be tempted to drink too much water.

If a dog is vomiting, I usually withhold water for several hours. This is because if they are sick and keep vomiting, they are actually dehydrating theirself. More water does no good.

Make sure you see EVERY stool to see what it looks like. If you see the need to go to the veterinarian, you might want to put a sample in a tight container or bag.

The other thing I would check is open her mouth by putting your hand on top of her nose and reaching your fingers down around the muzzle, fold the skin around her teeth - this is so she won't clamp down on you. She has sharp little teeth right now.

Take your index finger (of the other hand) and push the tongue out of the way and down the throat a little to see if there is anything stuff in her throat. Pups eat most anything.
You will not be able to get far, but if she is eating and NOT throwing up the food, she may be O.K. regarding the throat.

If she's not better in several hours with the vomiting or getting a temperature or other things are going wrong, get your veterinarian a call before they close (or as soon as they open) and ask for advice...... until you can to their office.

I know you don't want to jump ahead of something that is of no concern, but neither would a dog lover like you let any harm come to the pup. So, I say use your common sense and watch for any changes.

Good luck with her AND Congratulations on your new Pup!

Why is my 14-year-old German Shepherd vomiting white mucus, and having trouble breathing?

Time for a vet - now. That sounds potentially really serious, and you have a very elderly GSD there. He needs help right away!As an example: our dog collapsed earlier this year, clearly having trouble breathing. Luckily we were near the vet’s at the time. It turned out she was overheating badly and had laryngeal paralysis (her vocal cords were not moving and were blocking her airway). Without prompt care she could have suffocated. So, please believe me, trouble breathing is not a trivial thing - you need to treat this with the urgency it deserves.

What can one do about diarrhea in a 7 month old German Shepherd female with us since 3 months of age?

I would first consult with a vet, because dogs do not have the same tolerance for diarrhea as humans and this alone is a cause for immediate concern.Second, you describe a home where a large, young dog is in a crate alone 12-14 hours a day, with one of the owners disinclined to keep the dog. And lo, the dog is beginning to show signs of psychological damage. This is not sustainable, and its time for a gut check: is this dog your family and you will do what is necessary for their welfare? Or is this not the case?If the latter is the circumstance yes, you're abandoning a young life which needed you - but that's better than ruining their life completely. Suck it up, place them in the best home you can, and hope they will have the kind of good life you weren't able to give them. You are right to be concerned that she may not do well from this point. The real question is will she have a better chance at a decent life than with you.Sorry if I'm harsh but dog rescue exposes one to an endless parade of good dogs who had the bad luck to draw a short straw at formative times in their life, and we have to triage the results and try not to think about the ones we can't save. So I'm trying hard not to be bitter here. I know it's not easy. So many things in life require so much from us. That said, few of those things we encounter in our daily lives are as helpless and in need as a young dog about to lose their home and family.Do what you are capable of, for a girl who needs more than what she is getting at the moment. While not human, a dog feels as deeply as a child. This is one of those points in life where a persons strength and ethics are put to the test, where you and your spouse have to decide what is best.

How many times a day do I feed my 10 month old German Shepherd ?

There are a few things. First German Shepherds are prone to the "bloat". This is when the stomach itself twists and it's extremely serious and hope it can get reversed with surgery.
In order to avoid this feed it twice a day, don't overfeed or let it gobble food too fast. If it gobbles you can get a bowl with large, tall spikes in it that causes the dog to take it's time eating around them. You can find this in dog magazines.
About a half hour after he eats put him out and allow him time to poop. German Shepherds have a tendency to vomit yellow if they are hungry. Are you feeding the dog enough or missing a feeding? Check your bag to be sure.
If he wants to be around your daughter he is loyal to her....something with a German Shepherds. Loves the whole family but loyal to one. If you put a large dog pillow in her room it's likely he will sleep on it in her room.
As far as his pooping in the middle of the night, Shepherds will wake you up because they have to go out. But there again, put him out just before bed with enough time to poop. Also a good idea to feed him is early AM and just after your supper.....time to poop. Hope it helped :)

How do I care for an 8-week old German Shepherd puppy?

I love Mary Nielson’s answer because it is spot on. I just need to add a couple of things.Toys - Your puppy is going to need a lot of appropriate things to chew on. Puppies chew and it is going to get excessive in 2–3 months because they will be getting their adult teeth. Without appropriate toys your puppy will chew on inappropriate things. Your puppy does not know what is safe from what isn’t and they experience the world with their mouths. That means you are going to have to pay close attention, especially out on walks. Please do not give your puppy rawhide chews! They get soggy and can be a real choking hazard. I almost lost a dog to one years ago. They also teach your dog that it is okay to chew on leather. If you want to protect shoes, bags, furniture or jackets not giving your puppy rawhide is the first step.Foods- Please make certain that you don’t give your puppy raw or freeze dried raw food/treats. Puppies do not have a fully developed immune system so these things can make them sick. Adult dogs do fine with these, but stay away from these foods until your puppy is an adult.Enjoy your puppy and remember to give them a lot of attention. German Shepherds are sensitive and extremely bright. When they feel neglected they can become destructive. I had one that tore up my couch because I worked overtime one night. If I had been home as usual that likely would not have happened. Dogs like routine, it can be altered to benefit them, but they hate it when the change isn’t in their favor. A longer walk or an extra one is cool, but one shorter than normal walk will leave them wanting. If you can find a cover for the toilet paper roll, that would be a good idea. GSDs seem to have a thing for shredding paper, you could end up with tp confetti when they are bored.

Male German Shepherd won't lift his leg to pee...?

My dog is 6 momths old now and ever since we got him at 8 weeks, he has never lifted his leg to pee! He doesn't quite squat like a female either, just stands... And usually pees on his front leg sometimes too (gross)

Is this normal? Can he be taught somehow to avoid peeing on himself?? Thanks!

How do I fatten up my 2 year old German Shepherd dog?

Our dog is around 2 1/2 years old. He is a smaller German Shepherd. I realize that, but he is too small. We always have food out for him, but he just doesn't eat enough. Is there anything (fairly cheap) that I can give him to put some meat on his bones?
