My Budgie Is Sick What Should I Do

Is my budgie dying or sick?

just found my male budgie, approx. 2 years old, at the bottom of his cage. he is very disorientated, cant fly and wobbles as he walks and doesn't seem to know where he is. he's very lethargic and keeps falling asleep (both eyes closed). he's eaten and drank water, which I had to put right next to him so he could actually find it. his poo is runny and his feathers (partically tail feathers) look unpreened but aren't fluffed up. do you think he is sick/dying? I don't have an avian vet in my area (just a normal/general vets) he isn't old and he's usually so full of life. but it is late at night (11:20pm) so maybe he's just tired...? He fell asleep on my hand a moment ago, with his head tucked round into his feathers, he's never slept like this before and he woke up suddenly and seemed to panic, as though he didn't know where he was, tried to fly off but he couldn't. i'm very worried, please help.

How should I take care of my sick budgie?

Take him to the vet!! Birds mask their illness well, and if you notice he seems sick, he might not have much time left.In the meantime, provide a warm comfy place to stay, very fresh water, a small area (to conserve calories, we need him as strong as possible) and lots of TLC.Heres what I use for very sick birds and young mammals:It's small, perfect for emergency vet appointments, there is a nice soft and easily washable hand towel (just make sure the towel you use can not snag your budgies claws), small food and water dishes can be put in easy reach of the bird, so they are not forced to move much. There is a heat pad underneath the cage for warmth, but water bottles work too.

How can i tell if my pet budgie is sick?

The color of your bird's droppings are a big indicator of illness. However, the food he has consumed could change the color also. Watch for yellow, brown, black, or rusty looking droppings - these could mean internal bleeding. Also keep an eye out for runny or even droppings that are too firm. Keep and eye on what and how much your bird is eating. Birds eat alot for thier body size and should recieve the right amount of nutrients daily. Before feedinghim, make sure the bottom of the cage is clean so you can monitor hid droppings.

Also inspect his cere, which some people would say is his nose. It should not be red, inflamed or runny. These could be sign of very serious illnesses.

Thirdly, ruffled feathers for a long period of time could be a sign of respiratory infection. This can also conceal weight loss. Dirty feathers too can be a sign. Birds usually preen daily, so if he's not this could mean he's not feeling well.

Cloudy eyes or a discharge coming fro the eyes could be a respiratory, nervous, or muscular disprder and should not be left without treatment. Of this happens RUSH your bird to the vet ASAP!

Open mouth breathing is usualy a sign of respiratory problems. If he is doing this its lkly he has been sick for some time and should go the the bet ASAP. He will probably be hospitalized.

Lastly, if your bird is not talking or making as much noise as usual, this could also be a sign. Just like us when we don't feel well, we just want to be quiet and sleep.

If you feel your bird is dispaying ANY of these symptoms...TAKE HIM TO THE VET ASAP!

I think my budgie is sick! What do I do?

Howdy. I'm an aspiring exotic avian vet. (I'm in schooling right this moment.)
Firstly, I answered your question about the taming in a long length, I now see that you can't afford a trip to see a vet. DO NOT GIVE HER SUGAR WATER!!! Someone here is trying to explain the use of electrolytes in sick birds aid. I applaud you for identifying early signs of bacterial intestinal issues. However, though this is a sign of illness in older budgies, more moisturized droppings are normal in baby budgies. Identify how much water she is drinking then can also be a key. If the poop stuck to the vent area was dry, you might want to re-assess her diet. What does she eat?? Also, I also would suggest slowing down the rate of training to ease some stress on her behalf. Whenever you can, go back to the pet store and ask for a vet. they often allow a free vet visiting in the first 30 days of adopting. Monitor the room temperature. If you suspect some sort of bacterial infection, you can ask a store employee about avian amotrixaline. Best of luck!

Is my budgie sick (he's sleeping a lot)?

For the past week or so both me and my mum have noticed he's been sleeping a lot during the day.

He has always 'gone to sleep' when the room becomes dark (if we leave the lights off until it really is dark and we switch them on for example), but we don't know if he actually sleeps because he has his head behind his wings but reacts to small noises and 'wakes' quickly.

But now he's been falling asleep during the afternoons, and apparently a lot during the day while I'm at school. It's been very dark/rainy lately, maybe it's just that?

Or is it bad for a budgie to be sleeping at all times of the day as soon as it gets a bit dark?
He has no other symptoms.

Does it mean budgies are sick if they fluff up?

Being fluffed up for a short time doesn't mean they're sick. But if they stay fluffed even when you try to interact with them, you should contact your vet. If your budgie is showing other symptoms like lethargy, dizziness, weakness, and low appetite, contact your vet right now.

When birds are sick, they hide their symptoms. They do this because in the wild, if they appear sick or lame, a predator is more likely to pursue them. By the time a bird shows symptoms of illness, it may already be too late to save him.

I found this out the hard way when my green cheeked conure died from lead poisoning caused by a bell I bought at Pet Supplies Plus. I came home and found him fluffed and weak. I took him to the vet, but it was already too late to save him.

I encourage you to call your vet and ask him what to do. Bulletin boards are fine for general questions like diet and behavior questions, but when it comes to emergencies, call your vet before you post, not after. Otherwise, you waste valuable time that your pet bird may not have.

What should I do if my budgie is sick and I don’t have enough money to take her to the vet?

Take your fid to the vet. No way around that, sorry. Until u get them to the vet keep them warm. Put then in a small clean aquarium lined with old towels. Put a heating pad under one half. Put in dish of water and food. Keep the area dark. The idea is for the fid to spend all energy getting better, not keeping warm. Then get them to a vet.

Is it a good sign that a sick budgie is eating and chirping?

Yes.. A sick budgie, usually never eat, drink. It will be very inactive and will look so tired. You will just see him sleeping and won't even make a single noise. If he has started having food all by himself, it is a very good sign. You give maximum rest to your budgie. If he is not having food, try to make a paste of their food (mixing with water) and some how feed it atleast a little. This way he will not be so tired. You may also cover his cage and leave him in a silent place.I did this with my budgie. She became Ok within 7–8 hrs.Hope this helps. And hope your budgie get well soon.

How do you know if a sick budgie is feeling better or worse than they did before?

A budgie that is feeling better will have 25 to 30 tiny black and white balls of stool/urine on the cage floor every day. It will stop looking puffed up and sleepy, it will breathe normally with its beak closed, and it will be more active. It will eat more. A sick budgie looks sleepy or puffed up during the daytime except when it is scared, its stool may be a greenish color and soft, it may only have white droppings, and it may have fewer than 20 in the cage floor per day. It may not eat very well. It may regurgitate seeds or pellets stuck together in the seed dish or on the cage floor or walls. If it is sitting on the cage floor, it is nearly dead. A budgie can starve to death in 48 hours, so it needs to see a bird vet quickly if you notice anything at all wrong with it.
