My Budgie Is Very Active

Why is my budgie not active ?

She's probably lonely. I got my first budgie 5-6 years ago, and she was fine for a few years. She played with me, sat with me when I was on my computer. Danced to my music and chirped at me. But as she got older it seemed she wanted to spend less time with me. So I introduced a male budgie to her, and ever since she's been so active! She won't come sit with me as much anymore as she has bonded to the male, but she seems a lot happier, and the male is just so sweet. Whenever she bites him or gets angry, he just kisses her :P haha.

I suggest you buy another budgie for yours. Male is preferable!

I introduced my two a little different than it said to online, just because my female is a total weirdo ;)

What you'll need:
-2 Cages - The original cage your budgie is living in now, and a new cage.
-Your female budgie, new male budgie.
-Patience.

1. Place Cage 1 and Cage 2 next to each other. Make sure both cages have toys, food, water and perches.

2. Place female budgie into Cage 2, into neutral territory.

3. Place new male budgie into Cage 1, where your budgie used to live.

4. Leave them side by side for about 2 weeks. During this time, check for signs your budgie is unhealthy. You could also spend this time getting to know him, and making him feel safe around you. Taming him is a good start before introducing them, as they will bond more to each other than to you.

5. Once your new budgie feels safer around you, is in the clear health-wise, you can put the two birds together. Because your female budgie has been out of her territory so long, she won't be as defensive over it.Place them together, close the door and stay in the room to watch their reactions to each other.
Like my two budgies, they may fight a little at first. I don't know how your new male will react to that, but mine just sat and chirped away as the female tried to chase him off. :P (He also spent his time trying to court her.)

Remember: If your budgies fighting gets a little too rough, separate them and try again in a few weeks. If, again, they fight.. Keep them separated and once the male is tame, you can try to let them out of their cages together. It's all about trial and error, but you must always be in the room if the birds are together.

My new budgie is very active in his cage, bouncing off the walls. he just wants out all the time. Is he ok?

Of course he's okay :)

He's a bird. Birds aren't supposed to be trapped in cages all day! You know you're supposed to let your bird out of it's cage for a few hours every day, right? How would you feel if you were trapped inside a cage all day?

You need to let your bird out so he can get more exercise. Birds need to really stretch their wings. Also, coming out provides mental stimulation, which helps calm them down. Parrots are smart creatures, they need lots of mental stimulation. They get bored if they're trapped in cages with nothing to do all day. The more you let him out and just do his thing, the more he'll calm down. He'll probably chirp less too, if his chirping gets on your nerves at all. He's just got all this pent up energy. So let him out to fly and climb around!

If you don't wanna deal with cleaning up the messes he makes, well then you shouldn't have a bird, cuz that's part of owning a bird. Let him out! Keeping them in cages all day is cruel. And also make sure he's got lots of toys inside his cage for more mental stimulation. Then he won't want to come out as much, cuz he won't be as bored inside his cage.

My new budgie age and sex ?

It sounds like a young female too me, but without a picture it's rather hard to identify.
Smart birdy you have there :) Oh and it's cere being pink, I think that's a good sign that it's young maybe under 6-7 months of age? Either that, or the bird is breeding condition, but I think it's safe to say it's young.

Is my budgie going to be okay?

Aww, poor little guy. Keep a close eye on him. If he is active and alert and his normal self, he should be fine. If you suspect that he might be hurt, don't take any chances - take him to the vet. He might be scared of you now, and if that's the case, you'll just have to be gentle with him until he understands that you didn't mean to hit him. On the other hand, it's possible that he'll understand and forgive you quickly.

I got a budgie yesterday. it was extremely active and healthy in the store, but now it wont move, or eat.?

Well it's probably stressed out. Did you leave the bird alone for 24 hours? If not, the bird may be VERY stressed and can actually die from this. LEAVE HIM ALONE for a few days other than feeding him. He should go back to normal. Most pet stores don't tell people to let their bird get adjusted before playing with them, so they end up with stressed or dead birds.

edit: Sometimes they don't eat the first or second day, that's normal. Just make sure that it starts eating soon. Try putting fresh foods in the food bowl or 100% fruit juice in the water dish to try to convince it to eat/drink. If you're worried, birds will drink when they're done eating, so put a drop of food dye in the water, and you'll know if the bird is drinking because the feathers under the beak will be stained.

My budgie wont fly anymore?

While your budgie is could be injured or afraid of being re-injured has a possibility for not wanting to fly again, their is also the possibility that he may no longer be able to fly due to weight lost that causes birds to lose their ability to fly because they don't have the strength anymore to be able to lift them off the ground and hold themselves during flight. The bird becomes so skinny, it basically cannot lift itself off the ground anymore and just crashes onto the floor when it tries to.

I seen this happen to one of my parakeet where he lost weight due to the fact I had him with stronger parakeets that would make him wait until after they ate first before he was allowed for him to get food from the food dish. Eventually, he lost so much weight, he wasn't able to fly anymore. I notice this, and I moved him to a different cage where he was alone. He was able to eat more once I moved him, and now is able to fly once again.
