My Car Jerks While Driving.

Car jerks when going from park to drive?

No clue about the check engine but my car will jerk shifting going into park/d. Its like something with the trans. or something. Anyway I found that if i engage the parking break before putting it into park and releasing it after putting it into drive it wont shift so hard. Worth a shot, best of luck.

What are the reasons for a car to jerk while driving?

Under normal circumstances, on a manual transmission it can be due to a few things:Throttle application was too low, causing the engine to fall below it's torque band, potentially causing the gears to grind.Too much throttle from a completely stopped position, moving it from its position of inertia, causing it to lurch, possibly causing the engine to go way above it's torque band. You might have observed some cars doing this from traffic signals. On automatic ttransmissions, point two above is more of a factor. The first done does not apply too much as the electronics takes care of rev matching on an automatic downshift.

What would cause a car to jerk while driving?

Could be a bunch of things.. sounds like a fuel problem so lets focus there:

1) Gas Filter is clogged (this would generally happen more going uphill or when you accelerate)
2) Carb. is going south on you (or jets are clogged on fuel injection systems
3) Fuel Pump is dying or the lines are constricted
4) You have some debris in your gas tank which sort floats arond and cloggs the outlet from time to time
5) Your automatic choke is not functioning properly (the jerking would usually happen when the car is cold or just started running)

ok.. so maybe its not the fuel issue

6) Timing slips.. or the advance mechanism on the distributor is sticky
7) Spark plug wire(s) are bad and at higher speed arcs out to the engine or ground instead of to the spark plug.
8) mechanical problem (accelerator linkage ?)
9) Vacume leak (unlikely but possible)

Some you can check yourself.. some you may have to have a mechanic review.. WHen's the last time you had a full tuneup.. ?

Car jerks only when driving?

Hello all, I have a 2003 Ford Police Interceptor (crown victoria) the problem I have is that the car jerks when shifting gears. The car doesnt jerk at all when I put it in drive or reverse. It only happens when the car is in drive and it shift gears. I don't think its slipping becuase the car jerks a little front then back and you can feel it stronger when you are going slow. If you gas it up a little bit when its shifting you dont feel it as much. I took it to a few mechanics and one said its a solenoid and he change one but the car didnt change it does the same jerking motion. Thanks for your input.

My car jerks then turns off while I'm driving. What's wrong?

A tune up may solve your problem as it could be
- Distributor cap or/and rotor (cracked cap?)
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- Fuel filter
- PCV valve
Check the fuel pressure as it could be a sign of fuel pump failure. Otherwise, check the vacuum line for leak(s).

Good luck.

Why does my car jerk while I'm driving an automatic?

It could be poor running engine or slipping transmission. Need more info to zero in on the problem.

When driving in my car it will jerk a few times?

A damaged tire will cause your car to pull or jerk to a side when driving. Look for damage. If you do not see any, run your hand over the entire tire surface front and back. You should be able to feel damage. If the shoe is worn and the pads are worn, it will grip the rotor and cause the care to jerk to the right or left. If they are worn, replace immediately. If the car is jerking while shifting gears, there might be two problems. First, the transmission fluid might be low. If it is low, add the recommended fluid to the proper level. If the fluid is not low and it is still jerking, the problem could be more serious and require a professional diagnostic test to examine the transmission.

While driving, my car jerks a few times and then there’s no power. As soon as I stop and switch the car off and on, it becomes normal again. But as I drive a short distance, it does it again. What can be the problem?

It sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Start with your fuel filter and go from there to your pump and pressure regulator. It might be an ECU or fuel Injector problem but the fuel filter is probably getting clogged and once you start driving it clears out again. Or your pump isn’t pumping enough because your filter was clogged and had to work harder and wore out prematurely, that makes your ECU (your engine’s favorite app) detect low pressure and cut out. Some fuel pumps are continuous and pump from tank to engine and back to the tank, others are pulsating and turn on and off depending on the pressure detected and the pressure needed. If your fuel pressure regulator goes bad it can cause intermittent issues like the ones you describe. If you have fuel pressure, the coil packs are a good next step. An obd2 Bluetooth scanner and a smart phone will help even if you don’t have codes showing up as a check engine light you can check your fuel pressure or for misfires.Did it get worse as the weather got hotter? It’s vapor locking. Fuel filter is cheap and easy to see if it makes a difference. But it could be anything, professional garages are better than an idiot like myself making guesses anonymously over the internet about mystery cars like some kind of car repair fiend. I just need a fix man! I just need a fix!Maybe “Mechanic’s Anonymous” can help us both.Make sure you have fuel in the tank.

My car jerks while accelerating?

This problem just started the other day (just got it a couple weeks ago). I stopped at an intersection, and when I accelerated the car jerked rapidly (it kind of felt like driving over a washboard); it only lasted a couple seconds but was very noticeable. I think it might be a sticking brake since it only happens when accelerating from a stop, and it only happens some times at random.

I have a 1998 Olds 88.

What could be the problem, or how can I check and fix it before going to a mechanic?

Can a loose battery cable make your car jerk while driving and act like it's not getting gas?

When the car is in good working order and running, the alternator supplies all the load, including charging the battery. If the battery cable is loose, the battery may not charge. The rough running is due to a different problem.
