My Car Wont Start But When I Try To Start It It Sounds Like A Power Drill.

My car sounds like a drill when i go to start it and it wont start?

Sounds like you need a starter.

Engine sounds like a power drill?

Could be an alternator noise, making noise when loading up.
Could be slightly loose belts, which squeal when accelerating.

My car broke down and now it sounds like a power drill when I try to start it, what is wrong?

I was driving my 2003 ford explorer this past weekend and my car just died out on me at a stoplight. The "check engine" light came on and my power brakes and power steering went out and I was forced to get a tow truck to tow it back to my house. I tried starting it in neutral and in park but it won't start and it just sounds like a power drill when I try to start it. Can anybody please tell me what is wrong? I'm just a college student so I can't really afford to bring it in and pay the $100 diagnostic fee to have them tell me what's wrong so any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank You!

My car won't turn over and sounds like a soft power drill when I try?

Although it would be preferable if I could here the sound, it's almost certain (90-something-%) from your description that your starter drive gear has gone out. This part has a one way clutch in it, so that when your engine starts, it doesn't drive the starter to go faster than it should/does on it's own, during that moment before you let off the key. It's really not at all uncommon for this clutch to go out, and it makes a sound that most would describe as a very loud moan. The other only real possibility is that though your solenoid is working (if the starter motor is spinning, it has to be), the linkage between the solenoid and the starter drive gear could be broken, but it's pretty rare for that to happen.

Now, if you get a whole starter, with or without the solenoid, it will come with the drive gear as part of it. But, if you're handy enough to take the starter out of the car yourself, it's pretty easy to change just that part, and it only costs as little as $8, for my Chevy 350 for example. Most other types will cost a little more, but not much. Compare that to the cost of a whole starter, and it could add up to a fair amount of money.

Anyway, here's what the one for my Chevy looks like. Most others are pretty similar.

That first part to the left of the gear is the clutch that goes out. The part all the way left is the groove the lever from the solenoid fits in, to push the whole thing towards your flywheel/flexplate.

This is how it goes together inside your starter case. All you have to do is remove the snout (the aluminum part in the 2nd link), remove the retainer, and slide it off. Slide the new one on, put the new retainer on, and fasten the snout back on.

If my car wont turn over, and even a boost wont start it but it still clicks do I need a new battery?

That can be due to either a bad connection between the battery, the starter motor and the engine earth (if so it might get very hot at the bad connection), or it can be due to a dead battery and a small battery charger which can't supply much power by itself so relies on the battery to deliver most of the power for starting.

My car broke down and now it sounds like a power drill. What's wrong?

Might have broken timing belt, definitely wont be cheap if that's what it is.

Engine wont start after refilling windshield washer fluid!?

The two are not related.

"Won't start" is pretty vague. It could be hundreds of posibilities.
Dead battery, Low battery, bad ground wire to engine, bad power wire to starter, bad power wire to battery, bad connection at battery post or terminals, blown fuse, bad key switch, bad starter, bad fuel pump, bad injectors, out of gas, neutral safety switch, seized engine, broken connecting rod, no compression, no spark, bad oil pressure switch, broken timing belt, plugged fuel filter, bad starter solenoid, broken rotor, cracked distributor cap, Anti-theft device, water in/on engine, vacuum leak, bad ignition coil, blown computer, faulty cam or crank sensor ...

When you turn the key to START it what happens?
1) Nothing happens? (dead battery?, loose battery cables, or it's not in "park" all the way.)
2) You hear a "click", but nothing else? (loose battery cables, bad starter, bad starter solenoid, or broken engine)
3) You hear the starter turning, but the engine doesn't turn? (low battery voltage, bad starter or bad ring gear on flywheel/flex plate)
4) The starter turns the engine, but the engine won't start up? (out of gas, bad fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, broken timing belt, no spark)
5) The engine turns over, but very slowly. (weak battery, worn starter, out of engine oil)
6) the engine turns, but there's an awful banging noise? (something is broken inside the engine)

What do you drive?
Year?
Make?
Model?
