My computer won't start?

Regardless of what your brother may or may not have done, let's just address the problem as it is.

The immediate symptom is that a file needed to start Windows has been corrupted. It is entirely possible that a repair of the Windows operating system will correct the problem; HOWEVER, the hard drive itself may be the cause of the problem in the first place. The hard drive may be wearing out. This does not mean that the files on that hard drive are not accessible.

There is a very simple (to computer guys/gals) old trick to get to these files. You remove your hard drive from your computer and add it as a second drive in another computer. Given that all computers involved are running Windows XP, there should be virtually no problem in your drive becoming readable. It will be there in "My Computer" as a second hard drive.

At this point, your personal files should be accessible.

One may ask, "If her hard drive is so bad that it can't run Windows, why would it magically work okay in another computer?" Valid question. Here is the answer: The hard drive in this case has only become partially defective. The defect is in reading the most used area of the hard drive: the Windows operating system. The personal files are not being continously accessed as Windows is and that physical part of the hard drive is likely still okay.

Once this is all straightened out, perhaps your brother would be kind enough to partition your new hard drive into two virtual hard drives: one for the Windows operating system and the other for your personal files. In that way, should Windows ever go bad again, you are able to reinstall the operating system all over again without endangering your personal files. That's how I have my system set up and even though I have had computer and virus and other problems, I have never lost a bit of my personal data.

Computer wont start, repeats boot process?

When i turn my computer on, all that happens is the boot process repeats itself continuously, i have no idea why, if i press F8 and choose safe mode, nothing happens.... please help

Why is my computer making a high pitch noise and why wont it start up?

Several people here have answered correctly that it's very probably the power supply. I would not advise using the paperclip trick unless you have much experience already working around exposed wires. (That's a safety disclaimer) You can buy a tester specifically for testing power supplys or just borrow another power supply from someone and test it in your system. Make sure it's rated adequately for your hardware as was mentioned already. Before any of that I would recheck all connections & the mounting of the motherboard. I've seen a screw get caught between the case & MB. It got hot enough short circuiting the MB that it melted some solder it was touching and had fixed itself in place. So don't just check in the obvious places. Really scrutinize every nook and cranny. Also if it's not the power supply remember the more complex a system or problem the harder it is to solve. So, strip it to the basics. It needs a power supply, CPU & fan, (& RAM depending on how current the hardware. I forget sometimes. I've been retired a couple of years and still build PC's but when I started they still had real to real tape drives. Cut me some slack. I'm old you young whippersnappers!!!) to start a power on self test. (POST) Without video it will halt and error but if the components are good you won't get that squealing sound. Power down add video test again. Good? Repeat and add you hard drive and so on until everything is connected. Often when you have a bad component the easiest way to tell which one it is, is to do a process of elimination by stripping down to the basic components and work your way back up. It's often the fastest way to. For hardware that is. And this obviously isn't a software issue. Whippersnappers! Oh, and go read "Ready Player One" if you haven't already. I'm almost at the end right now. Good book.

Swapped computer cases, computer wont start now?

Ok so I swapped my computer into a new case. Once finishing I tried to turn on, all that happened was my power supply flashed its light 1 time and did nothing. No starting happened whatsoever.

I know all the cords are connected correctly as I took notes and labeled each cord before detaching.

I tried putting it back into its original case and the Power Supply still does the same thing and will not start.

I have a Corsair GS600 PSU, I did their paperclip test and while the PSU fan turned on, the case fan did not. Not sure if that means its working or not. The corsair site says the case fan must be running to work and its not.

So could it be the PSU or maybe the motherboard just stopped working?
