My Crosman Optimus Just Broke I Need Help

Crosman Optimus vs. Gamo Bigcat 1250?

IMO, in the $100 price range the Big Cat/Hornet are the best buy

Academy Sports sells the Hornet for $99, and includes free shipping

Big Cat or Optimus?
Accuracy and power is generally similar, but the Big Cat(or Hornet)** are much more durable, reliable rifles.
**The Big Cat and Hornet are the same rifle with slightly different stocks.

Added for "some advice"
The main complaint with the Big Cat/Hornet is their trigger, it's not as bad as the Crosman, but, they're not good. If you buy a Big Cat/Hornet, and after a year(warranty period) you would like to upgrade to a custom trigger

For around $30, and this is a do it yourself job.

Why won't my crosman barrel break?

this is VERY annoying. i just bought my first air rifle, a new Crosman Phantom 1000. it's a break-barrel air rifle. i tried following the process to load a pellet, but the barrel will not swing down no matter which way i try (tap/pull etc). i've been googling how to do it but nobody else seems to have this very basic problem. i would try applying pressure using the ground, but I've heard this will likely warp the barrel.

did i get a crappy lemon (possible as it's from wal-mart)

Crosman optimis air rile queston?

The Crosman Optimus isn't an especially good air-rifle. It's made in China, has a lousy trigger, requires expensive pellets (10.2 grain JSB Exacts) to deliver good accuracy and is extremely hold sensitive. When Tom Gaylord reviewed it, he concluded his review with the following:

"The Optimus is a fine starter air rifle, as long as you understand that it takes a lot of skill to shoot well. The trigger is not good. Be prepared for that. So far, the best pellet isn’t coming from a discount store. But if you want to get into the game at this power level and are willing to both learn and use the artillery hold, this is a great value."(1)

Personally I think Tom's probably being a bit generous here. I would recommend you avoid the Crosman Optimus since their are better options available. Especially if you're in the UK where the Optimus has been tuned down from the 16-17 ft-lbs of muzzle energy the US version delives to the sub-12 ft-lbs muzzle energy required by UK law. You can get a much better BSA (Meteor Mk 7, Supersport) or Weihrauch (HW35, HW80) air-rifle for about the same amount of money, especially if you don't mind a used air-rifle that's probably already been broken in. That's probably your best option for getting started in the shooting sports.

Basic pellet rifle question.?

What's better for me? Crodsman optimus or a gamo hornet? both look like great guns. I want to hunt squires and that about it. Both have pretty much the same specs. What's a better beand? Is 1300fps .177 good enoght to kill a squirrel?
All help appreciated.

Can you kill a raccoon with a crossman phantom air rifle?

Yes.

Is the ruger air magnum a good air rifle ?

The only two on your list that have much chance of taking a raccoon are the Walther Talon Magnum(26ft-lbs) and Ruger Air Magnum(24ft-lbs). The others are all in the 15ft-lb range, which is fine for small game, but not a good choice for raccoon.

How much noise?
Airgunweb.com(Rick) on youtube has a video review of most if not all the rifles you're asking about. He uses a decibel meter in his reviews. Most spring piston air rifles are right around the same level. >Unless you shoot ultra lightweight pellets and break the sound barrier

How would you rate the Ruger Air Magnum out of 10?
Are you talking about for value - probably a 7 or 8
If you're talking about compared to any air rifle at any price, then that's not a fair comparison. - probably a 3
