My Dad Is A Canadian Citizen I Live In California. My Dad Wants To Make Us Citizens Over There

I am a US born citizen and my mom is a dual US-Canada citizen that was born in Canada. Based on this, would I be able to obtain Canadian citizenship?

You wouldn’t be able to obtain it as according to Canadian citizenship law you are and always have been a Canadian citizen. What you must do is obtain recognition for your status as Canadian citizen by applying for a citizenship certificate.Check: Application for a citizenship certificate (adults and minors)

Am I a Canadian citizen?

You're a citizen of both the USA and Canada.

Any person born outside Canada after 15 February 1977, who has a Canadian parent at the time of birth, is automatically a Canadian citizen by descent. Any such person whose Canadian parent or parents were also not born in Canada and obtained their citizenship at birth by descent (i.e. second generation born abroad) must have successfully applied to maintain their Canadian citizenship before their 28th birthday, that is, if their 28th birthday took place before 17 April 2009. People falling into that category who did not take steps to maintain their citizenship lost their citizenship on that birthday. With Bill C-37 [4] coming into effect on 17 April 2009, there is no longer a requirement nor any allowance to apply to maintain citizenship.

Bill C-37 [5] came into effect on 17 April 2009, which changed the rules for Canadian citizenship. All individuals born outside Canada in the first generation born abroad to a parent who was a Canadian citizen at the time of the birth, are automatically recognized as Canadian citizens (retroactive to date of birth or date citizenship was lost) if the parent was born in Canada, or if the parent became a Canadian citizen, that is, by immigrating to Canada and being granted citizenship through naturalization.

Since you were born in 1992 and your father is a native born Canadian, you have acquired his nationality also.

Canadians, should I am American move to Canada?

So I'll go through your answers in order here...

Is Canada a nice, fun and interesting place to live? Absolutely. But it depends where you are to hit all three of those things at the same time. You can get the urban feel living in cities like Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. You can get a more outdoorsey feel by going any place more rural. If you want a little mix of both, give Halifax a try.

Do Americans get treated well over there? Of course. Why wouldn't they? As long as you're not a jerk, you'll be fine. But that's pretty much a general rule for anyone coming from anywhere.

Is it easy to move there as an immigrant? Depends. You'll need to check out the Immigration Canada website here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp

Are you allowed to live here if you're not a citizen? Again it depends. If you have a work permit or a study permit, sure. There even a Temporary Resident Visa if you'll be in Canada for an extended period of time. But you'll need to check out the website. I've got American friends who're dual citizens because they married Canadians.

Cold weather? Only really from October to March or April. July and August can get crazy hot depending on where you live. The rest of the time, it's really comfortable. But if you're expecting snow all the time, you may have to go to the Northwest Territories for that.

Anyway, good luck in your decision!

Could a US citizen rent an apartment in Toronto?

Odd question, I know. But could a US citizen skirt the rules a bit by remaining a US Citizen, holding a job in Niagra or Buffalo, yet live across the border in Toronto, or Hamilton, etc. by renting an apartment. Could you rent through proxy or something like that?

My wife and I would really like to live in Toronto for a couple of years without having to give up US citizenship and the egocentric US won't allow dual citizenship.

What Nationality am I if I was Born here In the US and my parents born in another country?

Many Ignorant people say that you are what your parents are. Here's my background. My mother was born In Cuba, but her parents are from Spain. My father was born here in US and his mother is from Canada his father is from France. And I was Born here in the US. What am I? Cause many people tell me that I'm not american. That I am what my parents are.
