My Daughter Wants To Go To A Performing Arts High School. Any Suggestions

Performing arts high school pros and cons?

so im really into music basically the guitar and songwriting and would like to perform in a band so what are the pros and cons of a performing arts high school. will i be able to make new friends fast? and i really wanna go but i really dont wanna leave my friends behind i mean their like my sisters so ya so do the pros outweight the cons?

How do you get into a performing arts school?

1)Well first you will have to find the nearest one to you.
Most will have a bus, if your home is far away.
You have to go to the school's front office or website and fill out a form.
Than you can set up an audition date. This can take some time depending how many other people are also auditioning.
It might also take time for the response to get to you. Its best to do it around 2 or 1 month before school starts so (if you do get in) you don't miss classes.
2) If you learn to play guitar up to the point were you can play a song. It would be able to use in the audition.
3) The cost can be different for anyone depending on classes and talent. Some are usually around the $100-$500. BUT, you can get a scholarship.

My 8th grade daughter wants to try out for her high schools dancing team. Should I let her?

No, you should continue to micromanage her interests and suffocate her curiosity, as well as seek vague advice in response to vague questions.Of course you should let her try out for something that she's interested in. If you have a legitimate concern that would be another story, but you didn't indicate anything regarding that in the question, so I can only assume that you're trying to push her in the direction that you want to see her go in, rather than the one she wants to go in. Don't make that mistake, especially at this delicate age. You should be supporting her interests and allowing her to try out things that she's interested in, as well as reminding her that her dependency on you to help her make these decisions can't last forever, and that she has to eventually become self sufficient. Deciding whether or not this is a good choice for her is most definitely the wrong thing for you to do. If you have a concern about it, you need to sit down with her and express your thoughts, and listen to her answer and treat her as an adult. If there is no real concern and you just don't think it's right for her, then she's going to rebel against you in some fashion and probably join it anyways. Avoid yourself the awkward power struggle between adolescence and parenthood, and treat her like an adult.

Do students at Performing arts schools take regular classes like science and math?

My daughter attended Fiorello Laguardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts in NYC, which is arguably the foremost high school of the arts in the U.S. It was formed by the merger of two other famous arts schools - High School of the Performing Arts and High School of Music and Art. It's a famous public school. It is the school the movie "Fame" is set at.

She took all the academic subjects a normal high school student would take in addition to her arts classes. (My daughter studied in the Art Studio, which was for visual arts. But she had many friends in the Vocal Music Studio and in the Dance Studio. Other studios at Laguardia include Instrumental Music, Drama, and Technical Theater.) The academic curriculum at Laguardia is fairly rigorous - they have many AP classes and honors classes. My daughter particularly enjoyed studying history. She is now attending a private 4 year liberal arts college, not an art institue. Most kids who attend Laguardia go on to study at regular 4 year colleges, where their majors are often in the liberal arts end sciences, not art or performing art. Most go on to careers that are not arts related.

Kids from Laguardia are often sought out by colleges and every year a number of kids go to the top Ivy League colleges and universities.

In 10th grade, my daughter took: English, Global History, Geometry, Chemistry, Spanish, Water Color Painting, Ceramics, and Gym.

In 12th grade she took English (she had 2 different electives, one per semester, but I can remember which ones), AP US History, AP Statistics, Physics, Advanced Oil Painting, Art History, and Gym.

My daughter is in a school play. When should I give her flowers?

Safe bet is mixed bunch of flowers ones that look very nice you cant go wrong with them! also, give them to her at the end to say well done great job, im sure you'll get a massive hug ^^

Buying a flute for my HS daughter?

I have answered this question MANY times - you can search. And you can read the website of my colleague www.jennifercluff.com - this is NOT me!

The advice about the Azumi is excellent - I would go with that in a HEARTBEAT, over the Amadeus - which is also decent - as it the Sonare, Brio, and several other flutes of this type - the HEAD made by a Big Name, and the body made in another factory. Yamaha, Jupiter/DeMedici, Emerson, and a a few other brands are alos good - at this level, you have few choices - just stay away from eBay (as if I had to say that!)

Check out what is offered at www.fluteworld.com. Thank you for being so supportive of your daughter's talents!
