My Dog Has Been Acting Strangely But I Do Not Agree With The Vets Opinion

Dog is acting weird after taking prednisone?

I have a 6 year old female pitbull, 60 pounds. Last Monday I took my dog to the vet for excessive itching and allergies. The vet prescribes her 20mg of oral steroid pills (prednisone) which I have to give her 1/2 of a tablet every 12 hours for the the first 5 days then cut down to 1/2 tablet every 24 hours for 5 days then cut down to 1/2 tablet every other day until gone. Since I've been giving her this medication she acts like she's "high". She walks slow, starts panicking, she shakes, she pants excessively, she drinks more water than usual and keeps peeing in the house. Should I quit giving her prednisone even thought says to give it to her until its gone? Did the vet prescribe to much? I called my vet today and she says to keep giving it to her until its gone and she will be fine but I don't agree with her. It's making my dog go crazy!

My pekingese is acting strange..please help.?

Some of these answers are from daft panic merchants. I am not a panic merchant, however I agree that you should see a vet ASAP. I don't think that a Pekingese will have a stomach torsion, or anything dramatic, however it must be checked out. When you see the vet, ask for packets of electrolytes to prevent dehydration and also ask for a syringe. This will perk her up, prevent dehydration and stop the vet suggesting that she is admitted to go onto a drip. When you administer this, just give her a very small amount, tilt her nose to the ground and squirt it towards her teeth and do this every ten minutes.

Dog acting jumpy?

Yes, we see this a lot in shelter and rescue clubs a lot.......

they are scared of everything, but a lot of love and a lot of patience does work for them....

the dog was left in a dark trash can, left to die, the dog is scared to death.....she will come out of it, but it is not easy to get these poor little dogs to come back to us.

you have to sit down with the dog, I mean a lot, show a lot of attention, and I am sure you are already doing this...and you sound like a really caring pair of owners......and this is what the dog needs more than anything right now.

sit in the floor, lay down in the floor, keep this up till the dog comes to you, it may take a long time to gain the confidence of the dog, but I have seen this done before......

people tend to give up on them, and let them stay hidden inside themselves, please dont do this.....keep it up, the dog will accept the love of both of you.

but, it is a good idea to get the dog to a vet if you think there is a mental problem, and I think you will be surprised that nothing but fear is wrong with this little dog.

pick the dog up, love on the dog, let it sit with you in the chair or on the couch, on the bed, everywhere you go, be sure the dog is with you in the house or yard....

do not raise your hands in the air, keep them at sides lenght, rasing of the hands and arms will sometimes make a timid dog worse, fear of being hit........

good luck...and thank you for taking this poor little dog into your lovng home.

please let us know what the vet says.........

My dog won't eat and is acting like a drunk.?

Sounds like "Old Dog Vestibular Syndrome." It is not life-threatening and some owners of elderly dogs mistakenly think their pet has had a stroke and needs to be euthanized. Vestibular Syndrome is not a stroke...it's a balance issue that can appear for reasons unknown. It can come on suddenly can get better within a matter of a few days to several weeks. Your dog can learn how to manage the symptoms in the meantime. You can help by making sure she gets plenty of quiet, rest and make sure to keep the environment well-lit, and avoid stairs if possible. She may need to eat/drink while lying down for a while until she learns to manage her balance issues...after that, elevated food/water dishes may be helpful so she doesn't have to drop her head to eat/drink which may throw her off balance. Be patient. When she does try to get up to move, allow her plenty of time to just stand so she can get her balance in check before taking a step. This can also happen to cats. My dog is acting weird?

My dog is acting really weird. He is a pit mix and usually playful and happy but since Sunday he has had his ears pinned back all the time and his tail barely wags. He seems really tired and very thirsty. he is on doggy prozac for stress because he seems to get agitated easily. I have a vet appointment today but I am not sure how to explain to the vet that something is really wrong without him thinking i am a crazy paranoid dog owner.

he has never showed aggression but Sunday we were playing and he bit me, didn't break skin but he clamped down pretty hard on my hand. I need suggestions on how to explain to the vet that something is seriously wrong without him thinking I am nuts. Has anyone else experienced this with their pets? all of a sudden have a mood change and shown aggression for no reason?

My dog has been trembling and is not running around the same but is eating? Do I need to take her to the vets, she is almost 4 yrs old?

YES! How long has this been going on for? Has there been some other change, like have you noticed poop changing? Or more frequent urination?Definitely take to the vet. If you could take a stool sample, a "clean catch" would be best. It doesn't mean that there can't be a little dirt, but, try to get a fresh sample. You are watching for worms or other parasites. Don't wait for this to be an emergency, please. I hope your girl is able to get what ever it is caught early to get fixed ASAP! Dying Dog while house sitting?

I'm currently dealing with a situation, me and my wife are watching her parents house for the week, because they are currently on vacation. The parents are well aware of the dogs condition, and its dying. I've suggested to my wife that the dog be put down, but shes in denial that the dog is dying. The dog, is lying on its side, its unresponsive, breathing very heavily, dog is about 17 years old. It has to be bottle fed water, and isn't capable of eating. To make this situation worse, the area we're in is farm area, and the fly population here is very heavy. I'm not the owner of this dog, and any negative(they would assume is negative, not necessarily what I believe) action on my part could hurt relationships, and I'm not sure how I can properly handle this. So I'm currently here watching an innocent animal suffer, wife is at work, and I have no way to take the animal to the vet, what can I do that won't cause problems with her family?

My dog hit her head and now is acting weird? Help :(?

My yorkie got a little too excited to go outside, rushed down the stairs and slid on the last step, and hit her head hard enough to let out a little cry. The worst sound to human ears.

Now she's acting incredibly weird.. She's kind of staring into space and her head is super low.. I tried waving my hand around her face to see if she would stop but barely noticed (enough to know she's not blind) which is not like her. She's laying in my lap (which also never happens) and I kind of want to stay up with her tonight just to make sure.. I can hear her snoring but I don't even know if I should let her sleep? I even tried giving her some cheese (something she never turns down) and she sniffed it and jumped away like it was poison..

The vet is closed because it's late but should I take her tomorrow? / does anyone know if maybe she's having a seizure or something? I'm freaking out. :(

She also recently just got pain meds because her eye got poked a few weeks ago, maybe I should give her one? Please let me know!
