My Dog Is Jealous About My Guinea Pig

My dog is jealous of my guinea pig?

I recently got a new Guinea Pig and at first my dog (which is a Miniature Schnauzer) and I want my Guinea pig to get used to me so I try to hold him and pet him but my dog always gets in the way and tried to push him around with his nose. I know Guinea Pigs are timid and what not but my dog gets really jealous whenever I don't pay attention to him. Be it that I'm busy or I'm petting another dog. I don't want my dog to be jealous but I want my Guinea Pig to like me. I tried to let my dog in while my piggy was in the cage but all he did was whine and stick his nose in between the wires of the cage. Is there anything I can do to stop/remedy this?

Do guinea pigs get jealous of other pets??

I just read someone's question about their guinea pig getting jealous...and i'm getting a guinea pig soon, but i also have a dog, cat, hamster, and a rabbit. i treat them ALL the SAME!! i give them individual love and play time, treats, everything every day. But my hamster, rabbit, and guinea pig's cages will be next to eachother. Will my guinea pig be bothered? Or will it get jealous if i play with my other pets and it sees?

How can I stop my guinea pig from being jealous?

You simply can not believe every thing you read on the internet. The most important thing is to really know your guinea pig. Some guinea pigs just simply want to be alone, they do not want another guinea pig in their space. You clearly were giving Lucy all the attention she needed and you had become her companion. She is trying to protect her space form the new guinea pig. Hopefully if you keep giving her loads of attention she will over come this and realize you still love her. Go to my You Tube site and view The Towel Trick.

Wrap Lucy in a towel and lie her on your chest while you watch TV, read a book, or listen to music. Set her in your lap while you are on the computer, my Miya loves the sound of the keyboard and purrs to it! Carry her about the house with you as you do your day, guinea pigs adore doing your day with you. Talk softly to her and pet the towel thus you are petting the guinea pig through the towel.

After a week or so when she has calmed down with you doing this, try setting Lily next to her while she is still in the towel on you lap and hopefully she will slowly accept her knowing yo still love her.

Will dogs try to kill guinea pigs?

YES! Unless the dog has been brought up with guinea pigs from a puppy then it will likely see them as prey and kill them. Everyone I know whose dogs are fine with GPs have been brought up with them from young and they mention that is why they are fine with them. It’s stupid to try otherwise as you will end up with a dead GP and have subjected a poor animal to torture and death for no reason. Have a look on Google to see most stories are of dogs killing prey pet animals - be it GP, rabbit or other.Dogs are predators and GPs are prey. Dogs will always have their predator instinct in them as it is written in their genes from thousands of years of breeding and inherited behaviours. You cannot remove this but they can be trained from young to relax this somewhat. Some dogs even maul and kill babies through jealousy or other even though they may be tame and family pets.Better to keep the GPs in the neighbours home. They don’t need constant attention, only feeding twice a day and replenishing with limitless hay and fresh water whenever it is finished.

How to stop my cat from being jealous of my guinea pig?

Sounds like his mother taught him not to play with his food, just eat it. ;D

One very noticeable thing: Move the cage, especially if the cat is not allowed to sleep in your room. Maybe it is your choice of another animal that he doesn't like. Consider getting him a kitten.Spend more time with him than you do the Guinea pig. Have him neutered, if he isn't.

Do cats and guinea pigs generally get along with each other in the home?

If the cats are raised with guinea pigs from when they are small kittens, they may. But guinea pigs are a small prey animal. So I would be cautious about attempting this, and about leaving them together unattended. When I was a child, we lived in the country and had indoor/outdoor cats and barn cats. We got some guinea pigs, and when they matured and started reproducing, my parents moved them outdoors. At first they lived in a roomy cage, but they gnawed a hole in the botttom, and not long afterward we had a "herd" of free roaming guinea pigs living in the grass and brush by our front porch. It was awfully cute. They made tunnels in the grass. And every morning they would come to our porch, single file, all saying "meep, meep, meep!" and I would feed them. Our cats were afraid of the guinea pigs, who showed no fear of the cats at all. So they appeared to be safe. Unfortunately, one day a seasoned tom cat who had disappeared for many months returned home, battle-scarred and gaunt. As he was recuperating, he noticed the guinea pigs. Overnight, he taught the other cats that guinea pigs were stalkable and edible. And the next day, every single guinea pig was gone.I answered - “Do cats and guinea pigs generally get along with each other in the home?”

Is my dog (a maltese) jealous of a dog I got today?

I would not "baby" Lucy because she is staring the other dog down, you would be encouraging the bad behavior she is projecting. It's going to seem like Lucy hates the other dog for awhile because it's an invasion of her turf so they might try to establish dominance over each other. Do not let them fight! You need to make sure they both know that you and your mother are the pack leader. When they are doing something your don't like remember " No Touch, No Talk, No Eye Contact ". Ceasar Milan has very good training habits if you are interested in going to the library and getting his books or tapes. I learned a lot from him.
