My Dog Is Mentally Insane

Are bichon frise dogs insane?

I love my poodle (and my shepherd/lab mix). He is super smart so he gets bored easy. he loves to play ball constantly. NEVER stops. When he thinks its time for me to wake up he drops a ball on my face over and over again. Poodles are crazy

Is There A Mental Hospital For DOGS And CATS?

We've had four dogs AND a cat. EV'ry one of them have displayed psychotic tendencies, from DAY ONE. They are devious, troublemaking little devils, AND they have no remorse at all for what they put me through!!

Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a little. But I PROMISE you ... they are a handful! They do their dirt, then act innocent. Intelligent little cons, too; NEVER get caught in the act! I think they take turns on lookout and warn each other when I'm coming.

Oh, and ... try separating them and sneaking up on one! HA!!Never works. Their ears are super-sharp; by the time you've tiptoed around the corner, they are sitting at attention, looking steadily at you! Two things come to mind:

DEVIL DOG ... HOUND OF HELL
&
CATSEYE

They also launch sneak attacks on me. The cat hides behind trees and leaps out at me when I turn a corner; the dogs have crouched and pounced. And LAUGHED at me!!

Can I check them in to a STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL ... before they end up driving ME crazy?!

My male dog insane for female in heat... give him a benadryl?

Okay I have two purebred American Pit Bull Terriers. They bred last spring and we had pups in the summer. It would be unhealthy for my female to breed her 2 times in a year, but she's in heat now and my poor boy is MISERABLE. I've never seen anything like it. He's in a crate now, panting and screaming and crying... he can smell her and she's a big "flirt", flagging her tail and all those doggy flirting behaviors.... and my boy can't take it. And we live in an apartment and I can't take his screaming and whining. Anything I can give him to make him chill out? He already broke through the steel cage once, we had to fix it. I know benadryl makes people sleepy, and u can give dogs benadryl for allergies and bug bites. Can I dose my dog to calm him down? I almost want to give him a Xanax!

Please help!

Can Dogs go mentally insane?

I wouldn't so much describe it as insanity but a dog's mental processes are just as prone to defect as any human's. I have definitely met a few dogs that might be described as having a screw loose. I had one dog who, bless her, was more than a shilling short of a pound but that didn't stop her from being a wonderful companion.

Illness and boredom can effect change in a dog's behaviour. Make sure that he is getting enough exercise and plenty of stimulation. Give him security - his bed, his toys etc but YOUR rules - and they must be consistent.

If his behaviour is a problem have him checked out by a vet to ensure that the cause is not physical then take him to dog training sessions if it isn't. Give him lots of love and attention but make sure that he always know that you are pack leader.

Dogs can and do suffer from Alzheimer's disease. This is treatable.

Why are some people insane animal lovers?

There IS a noticeable difference between your typical average animal lover and someone who is literally mentally unbalanced to the point where they perceive animals as human beings. For example my mothers old friend (old as in no longer friends) has/had 4 large breed dogs that were always in the house. They took priority in this ladys life. As well as her other animals outside. Once I asked why she chooses to deal with the pain in the butt that comes with having large dogs inside and she immediately took offense to my question and started getting defensive as if I threatened the lives of the dogs. I dropped the subject quickly and went outside to get away. Another reason I ask is because I see so many people that think its cruel to discipline animals or to train them with force. By force I mean an electric training collar on a dog or a muzzle on a dog or tying a horse to a post with a lead rope to let it get used to be tied up without a human next to it etc etc. it's almost like these people believe that not allowing animals to do whatever they want when they want is a crime and that the human that commits this said crime should like receive the death penalty. Anytime you view a video on YouTube about how to use any kind of "forceful" training method rather it be an electric dog collar or what have you, the comments section is a neverending stream of "people who use these should die" "dog killers" "lets train your kids not to wet the bed with a shock collar" etc. Were these people deprived of something as children that would cause them to react and act this way when it comes to animals? Now before the yahoo answers world starts to go nuts on me allow me to clarify, I am in no way condoning animal cruelty nor do I agree with all methods of training of animals. I am simply seeking understanding as to why some people go overboard with this. Thank you.

What keeps you from going insane?

All of the obvious things really work, such as, running, all exorcise, eating right, and so on…BUT - I couldn’t get anywhere in this busy, crowded world without proper medication. I’m not talking about the things like Prozac, I’m talking about the things that WORK! The key is to use them correctly. By correctly I mean in the way your body is telling you while throwing out the excess that your mind desires. It’s not a fine line at all, it’s a very hard line to obey. If that line is crossed you have just compounded your life 100 fold. When Valium or whatever works continues to make you feel like it did in the beginning for a long time, then you are passing the line. The point at which it is working correctly is when you don’t notice it and yet your symptoms are staying away.

What happens if I didn't walk my dog?

Some real good answers written over here. So, it has been sort of cemented now that not taking your dog on a walk is bad. This is rational and agreeable. However,Lets explore the other side now.Not taking your dog on walks is actually sort of fine too according to me.But this comes with some caveats.(I had to answer anonymously in order to not get criticism over my answer, so sorry if it offends any dog lovers in any way)Firstly, you should at least have a medium to big sized house,a duplex perhaps but no apartment or condo, and the dog kept leash free with uninhibited access to roam all around the house, ofcourse pee and potty trained (bathroom, yard, terrace, etc),you can even treadmill-walk your dog, it just takes a couple days practice.(you can avoid unwanted encounters, keep your dog off fumes and bad stuff if you live in a not so clean place, you can avoid your dog getting dirty, but most importantly you can avoid mites, ticks, and fleas that could be abundant outside your house if you have street dogs roaming around the outdoors at nights)Secondly,Maintaining a professional and watchful diet,as in, feeding only premium dog food and quality treats,no junk, no human food, or anything cheap otherwise.(This is important to avoid health issues, uneven weight gain, balance nutrition, improve immunity, etc)Thirdly,Socializing is a choice of the owner,as he/she could be an extrovert or an introvert,it may not be all that necessary to a degree either, because, if you are a committed owner, you see your dog as the world, and your dog sees you as the world.(Basic socializing, with your family members, friends that visit your house, etc are essential though and have to be done on a regular basis)Finally,Affection should be conditional though, because your love can make or break the dog,a disciplined love is what works, ignored and pampered are the two ends of spectrum here,so, make sure your dog doesnt end up on either of the extremes. In the end it all boils down to:A Bad Owner = A Bad Dog.PS:-> You should be the one to feed and treat your dog daily.-> You should be the one to run around in your house with your dog daily.-> You should be the one to train commands and tricks to your dog daily.-> You should be the one to hug your dog daily.-> You should be the one to love your dog daily.FORGET EVEN GETTING A DOG, IF YOU ARE GOING TO KEEP IT CHAINED FOREVER INDOORS OR OTHERWISE !!!

My dog dug a hole in the wall?

I have a 2 year old schnauzer and she gets really stressed out when my partner and I leave. We have her crate trained because if we left her out she'd eat everything in the house. We try to make coming and going not a big deal but she just gets stressed at us not being there. Well recently she dug a 2 inch in the wall next to her crate. I know if I place her crate in the middle of the floor and tie the bottom on she cant destroy anything but im looking for a bigger solution. she is obviously mentally bothered and it scares me. she sat there digging at ONE SPOT on the wall. its like something out of a psycho thriller for me. Anyway, im worried about her and im wondering a few things:

Can dogs be mentally insane?
What can I do to ease her mind? (besides not giving her attention when we leave n come back -- that is such an old answer and it doesn't work)
