My Dog Keeps Chewing On Her Nail And Now Her Nails Are Soft

Can u soften dogs nails before clipping?

Yes you can just soak there feet in warm water dogs nails very pores there like a sponge they will absorb the water and soften the nails. If the nails are really long it's better to soak the dogs paws in warm water to prevent the nails from splitting.

Try to get your dog to stand in warm water for about 3-5 min if you can. This is why it's best to do this when your dogs is getting a bath just because the nails are soaking. If you can get your dogs to stand in warm water it will make it much easier to trim the nails.

My dog is chewing off her nail?

The quick is probably exposed. The best thing you can do is completely bandage the paw until tomorrow when you can at least call the vet to see what they recommend. One of our dogs was doing this and he actually stopped chewing on it when we bandaged it up. Make sure the bandage is tight but not tight enough to cut off her circulation. You should still be able to fit your index finger under it comfortably. If you have an E-collar you could also put that on her along with the bandage so that she can't reach down enough to bite off the bandage. If you wake up and the bandage somehow came off, don't freak out, because the nail will grow back. Just make sure you call the vet in the morning and make sure to ask them about what you should do. If it starts to bleed, however, you can buy something called Quik-Stop which is used by groomers when they accidentally quick a dog(cut too far on the nail and cut off a bit of the quick/vein). However, corn starch is the same thing and should also work just as well.

Then I suggest you go and buy it tomorrow. The best this you can do is use gauze or even a very soft towel to cover his paw. If you use a towel, rubber bands should work but again, make sure it doesn't cut off circulation.

If you use gauze, try to look to see if you might have any medical tape or just regular masking tape or even duct tape. Make sure that the tape doesn't touch his paw or anything, as for when you're removing it tomorrow it could rip out some of his fur and cause him some pain.

Do all dogs need to have their nails trimmed?

Most dogs will need their nails trimmed, if they are on soft grass, or indoors most of the time.
If they are out on pavement or roadway, they keep nails short with long daily walks.
Some dogs just grow nails faster or tougher.
My Chihuahua gets a LOT of exercise on concrete, (patio and sidewalk) and his nails still need trimmed every 2 weeks. I think he may be too light-weight to wear them down.

Most dogs that have dew claws will need the dewclaws trimmed regularly, so they need checked often.
It is often covered by hair, so it's easy to neglect:

They are commonly injured if they get too long, and they also can make the leg sore, if they curl inward..

Can I trim my 4 weeks old puppies nails with regular nail clippers?

Use the larger heavy duty regular nail clippers if it is a larger breed but for smaller ones it should be fine.. If you have a nail file use that after clipping them as the edges may be ragged or sharp still. Just go over the front ones lightly (on a small breed an emory board will work too.

Why are my black dogs nails turning pink?

My Chihuahua mix has had black nails since I got him at 8 weeks old. He is almost exactly 1 year old now, and in the last two months his nails have been getting lighter and lighter, and now the nails on his front paws are almost totally pink. Is this normal?

How do you heal short nail beds after years of nail biting?

Now your question was How do you heal short nail beds? The answer is- you cant - nail beds, shape and length are often genetically determined. The nail bed is unchangeable. I think you may want to know how to improve your nails once you've stopped biting them and Louise Ferguson mentioned many tips I would have said so I won't repeat, but I agree tht the more attention you spend on your nails the better they will look and you're less likely to chomp on them. They really don't taste good either :)I used to be a major nail biter also. When I was in HS, one of my favorite teachers had a habit of placing her hands on different students desks and lean back while she faced the class and lectured. I was 16 years old and loved her classes. She often placed her hands on my desk while she spoke, and I was enthralled by her beautiful nails and her amazing diamond engagement ring and wedding band. I decided at that time that I may never have the diamonds but I was going to have those nails. And that's the way it turned out :)
